Too Many Irons in the Fire

Location: Augusta, KS | Well, it looks like I'm going to be selected for a position for a Youth Entrepreneurs organization. I will be going into high school classrooms and working with students on entrepreneurial and free market concepts. I'm so excited to get to do something that I'm so passionate about!
But as I'm originally from Wichita, I have no idea on where to start trying to find a place for both myself (I have two dogs) and my two horses. The houses I've been finding for rent are all in really bad areas in the middle of Topeka, or ungodly expensive... especially if they allow pets (1,000+ for one person is a little excessive). I'd really like to live in a bit more rural area, does anyone know where I should be looking to find something like that? Also, can anybody recommend any boarding places? The smaller the better, really. As I've mentioned here before, I currently manage a boarding stable and am the only employee Mon-Fri for 45-50 horses. So if anybody knows of anyone needing a little part time help in exchange for boarding, that's an option too.
I'm so excited, but so overwhelmed moving to such a new area. Thanks guys

As far as good places to live around Topeka, look in surrounding towns. I rented an apartment in Silver Lake (west of Topeka about 7 miles) for something like $300 or $350 a month when I worked for the legislature. Can't remember if they allowed pets or not as I didn't have a pet then. The owners of the apartment complex where I lived (right behind the grocery store) also own the bar in town - Mac's Bar.
Rockin V south of town I believe offers boarding with a smallish indoor arena and an outdoor. I think a lot of English riders board there but I went to some barrel races there a few years ago. http://www.rockingvequinecenter.com/ is their website.
My grandmother lives at Topeka and I have lots of friends from there so I will ask around tomorrow at the barrel race if anyone from around there comes to Lawrence, and if not I'll ask about boarding places/pet-friendly rentals Wednesday when we run at the Expocentre.
Congrats on the new job! I think you will like Topeka - it has all the conveniences of Wichita but I think its a lot easier to get around.

Thank you! I have ruled out apartments... my pups are accustomed to having the run of the farm, they would go absolutely nuts without a yard, I can't do that to them.
Thank you for asking around, I really appreciate it!

I hear ya on the apartment thing. I'm lucky that Tuffy is happy no matter where we are - he has me spoiled :) I will definitely check and see what I can come up with for options. Heck grandma and my uncle might know of something on the outskirts with a yard. What organization will you be working for?
