| This gorgeous mare is in the kill pen. She's 15 hands and approx 16-18 (theyre guessing off her teeth) She looks like a total darling, and looks like she's built to run!
Does anyone have opinions on her age? I don't mind 16-18 but if she's way older I'd have to rethink.

| Pictures added! Any opinions greatly appreciated! I'm looking at transport as she'd have to cross the US border into Canada.. anyone done this? Would just coggins be needed? |

Location: Oklahoma | I would guess 15 or 16 by the picture of her teeth. Galvayne's groove is about halfway down the top incisor and that would indicate 15, of course that is not totally accurate without the picture of the right side incisor, but if she were say 20 years old, the groove should extend down to the bottom of the tooth. Also her bottom incisor is not quite triangular-shaped, which it would be if she were closer to 20. By the way, her conformation looks wonderful. I'd try her!

For Canada you will need a health certificate, brand inspection, bill of sale, coggins, and depending on where the horse has been the horse may need other blood work and may need to be quarinteened |

No I haven't, I am about 6.5 hours away. A few people that have seen her said she appeared sound, but can't be for sure obviously.
Thank you. Waiting to hear back about transport costs. To get a health certificate and coggins does a vet have to come see her at the feedlot before she leaves? |

Location: Qld Australia | I ave no idea about crossing the border and I would hate to guess on age.
She does look very upright though the legs and pasterns. I would be inclined to think at worst case this will affect her soundness, as best case it will affect her smoothness.
In some photos she looks a bit thick through the bottom of her throat latch if I am picky. In the last photo she looks like both her front feet turn out which actually looks like it is caused by her whole leg from the knees down being slghtly twisted out.
Body wise I can she why you are attracted to her but I would be going over her legs with a fine tooth comb as I think there are major issues to take into concideration.
Is there any history on her at all? Do you even know if she is broken in or how long it has been since she has been ridden?
Proceed with caution and don't let your heart rule your head. (Easier said than done I know.) |

| ^^ I see what your talking about. I honestly was thrown off by her body and face, didn't really look at her legs much. She is said to be broke to ride, and was ridden through the auction ring. No other history.
Oh my heart always rules my decisions.. That's how I ended up with my last two. I still have the one.. she has issues but I still love her. It's tough! |

| I wonder if the leg resting could be from being sore after being kicked by the other horses?
It's so hard to tell.. My mare does the same thing all the time and she is unsound. But then again alot of horses do just to rest. |

The vet has to draw the blood, you would need to talk to the feedlot to see which vet they use |

Location: Qld Australia | You say you have two unsound horses already. If you are not able to go and see this mare for yourself, based on these photos I would be very very cautious. I can see what you like about her but there are potentially major issues that you should not ignore. If you could go and see her yourself you might be able to discount some of the issues raised. On photos alone, I don't think you can.
In saying that, if you are getting her DIRT cheap say $100 -200 she might be worth getting home IF you are willing to either pass her on or put her down if her soundness issues are what they look to be. As I said, you have two unsound horses at the moment, the chances are high that you may just be adding a third.
Either way, good luck wioth your choice, as I said earlier, I can see what you like about her, just be aware of her red flags. |

| I say 15-16ish. Cute little mare but I would definitely get a vet to look at her first... but then again if you're getting a good deal then it's up to you. I like her. |

Location: lone star state | I would take the chance. She does have a classy look about her. If she doesn't work out for you maybe you could sell her as a kid or trail horse if she's gentle. Worst case take her back to horse sale. Killer horses are up at this time and futures are trending to remain strong... |

| Thanks everyone! If I was closer I wouldn't even question it.. But since I'm farther and in a different country theres some stuff that needs to be worked out before I can get her. Im hoping it works out!
I was thinking if she doesn't workout for me, I could always find her a kids home, if shes well broke like they say. She looks like a darling I just can't see her in this situation :( |

Location: Minnesota | Id take a chance on her too, but thats just me! I love the feeling of a rescue, even if I end up giving away a healthy horse because they don't suit my needs. I worked for a sale barn for way too many years and brought home way to many neglect cases, but it made me feel fuzzy inside  I like her. |

| ^^ Oh yes, me too! I'm definitely planning on running a rescue in the future. The last mare I bought was at a cattle auction.. Adorable 14 hand quarab mare with arthiritis. I ended up giving her away to a home to teach a 5 yr old girl how to ride :)
And the other mare I bought at auction two years ago was obviously mistreated, and is still a little off in the brain, but she has come leaps and bounds which makes me very happy!
I'm going to need a second job! |

| She looks like a sweet girl. I would give her a chance. If she is cheap you can always rehome her as a companion horse etc if she was not sound enough for riding |

If I don't get her, there is a local auction at the end of the month with horses that go to meat all the time.. Might end up being something there as well.
I just hope if I decide not to, that someone else will take her. :(

| Thanks everyone! Sadly, I've decided against it. I talked to a few people and there were mixed reviews about the whole operation. As well as a huge strangles outbreak on the feedlot last fall. I just can't put my other horses at risk.. and in order to quarantine her it would cost much more than I can spend.
I will be attending the local auction and the end of the month though, and am planning on helping out a horse. |

| Can you tell us where she is located? So maybe somebody on here can save her? I think she is Darling.... looks just like one of my mares i've had for years. Confo and everything... My mare is 25 still running barrels and has been running since she was 3 with the exact same build as this horse here... if she was close to me i'd save her! |

Location: Where I am happiest | I rescued a horse off this feedlot and everything worked according to plan. They are on the up n up and were wonderfull to work with. The horses that get listed have been evaluated by the group of volunteers who take the time to check them out, and list them. There is some nice horses that get listed and new ones are added each and every week. You have to go into it with the mindset you are saving a horse from slaughter. The kill buyer isnt in the business of re-selling/re-homing horses so it's not very feasable to think your going to go and "visit" the horse numerous times and vet check and on and on.Kill buyer could care less and he has to fill his trucks, period. Your saving a life! It's not the horses fault people have failed them and took them to the local auction where over half end up with the kill buyer. It's very sad.
The mare I rescued from this very feedlot is a beautifull mare, and very kind. She has been a ray of sunshine. She cleaned up really well and is now absolutelly georgous. We bought her last feb.

I agree, I wish I hadn't looked at this thread, poor sweet mare, I know there's ton more just like her that need saving and I wish we could save them all!!!
On a positive note, aside from the straight pasterns and how her head ties in, I do like her muscling, shoulder and long forearms, she has a decent hip too. She almost looks like an impressive bred or pleasure horse.
She has a sweet eye, I hope someone snatches her up soon! |
