I am having the worst time. I have had my saddle fit checked for what feels like a million times. Each time people tell me it fits him fine but there are sometimes dryspots and worst of all showing early signs of atrophy in his withers. I don't have a long tree but it still feels like it goes to far back by his flanks. What are some good saddles for horses built like him

the round skirted CJ Record Breaker by Cactus, and I know that Triple Creek paired up with North 45 or someone and made almost a "skirtless" saddle that was in Barrel Horse news in last November's issue.

I've got a very short backed mare and the CJ saddles don't work because even though they appear to have shorter skirts the actual bars of the saddle are long.  The saddle that I've found with the shortest bars is the newer Connie Combs saddles.

I have a little short backed gelding that is 14.2hh at the wither.  He also has dips behind those shoulders as well.  I had to buy him a Sharon Camarillo by Courts, and I also use a Sharon Pad with the shoulder pads in it to fill in those dips.

When I get back from town I'll add some pics.

I never tried one of those.  That's good to know!

To the OP.  I just looked at the link to the thread you posted.  You did a bang up job on rehabing that horse.  Very nice!

I agree that the CJ Recordbreaker is good and I really loved the one I had but have to be honest and mention that I ride in a Double J Intimidator now and LOVE it even more! It's made for short backed horses so you might look into it. Sits you so nice and deep too.

I have a 14" Ammerman that works nicely on my 14.2 gelding. He is built like the bay horse pictured. I use a CJ orthosport to cover his gap.   It has an 8" gullet, too.

I'm not sure if this link will work but here's a pic of my Intimidator so you can see how short the bars are.

Also if any ropers have input on this for rope saddles too. Mine is too wide though the shoulders and too narrow though the hips on him.

The best treed saddle I found to fit was a round skirt flex2 Xtreme performance. I love it and it fits my short backed round horse.

I am guessing yours is older then 3 years old, as now there is the flex 2 and the xtreme performance.

I agree for short bars, go with the Kelly kaminiski flex 2, if your horse is shaped like Kelly's horse Rocky go with the wide. If your horse is wider then Rocky, go with a Lisa Lockhart flex 2 wide fit is what Louie supposedly runs in.

Hope that helps

Merrill saddles built by Three Forks Saddlery fit this type of horse really well. My daughter has a stout, cutting bred mare. We have struggled with finding a good fit, but the Merrill did the trick. Check them out. They have used saddles for purchase on their Facebook page.

A saddle fitter once told me this and I want all your opinions if I was being fed a line or if its the truth.  Measure from the front concho to the back concho and that's pretty darn close to how long the tree is.  The skirts don't matter quite as much as they give a little but the tree doesn't.  That's how I've measured since I was told that and that's how I found that any of the CJ saddles whether Cactus or Double J's are real long.  Am I way off base?

Hummm dont know about measuring the tree like that, I always thought that most barrel trees were about the same lenght, it was how much skirt that was put on the saddle. I always tryed to go with less skirt for my short backed horses.

I would say that would be a close guess.

Barrel trees are not all the same in length, my crown c is a lot longer then my Lockhart. Also I think it also depends on the seat size, as a 12 seat saddle is not as long as a 17 seat.

I am not a saddle maker, my assumptions are from observation and speaking with saddle makers.

We did this at a jackpot one day and I was surprised when we measured my CJ saddles (at the time I had both Cactus and Double J CJ's).  Then we compared the measurement to a Connie COmbs saddle made by her current maker.  The CC was inches shorter.  I honestly don't remember the difference but it was noticable.  The super short backed mare I have needs one in the worst way.  If my daughter decides to keep her we're going to have to invest in one.
