I had a hound of some sort wander to my house yesterday....I believe he is a Red bone coon hound. He has a collar so I know he belongs to someone. Very sweet & laid back. I went out to check on him this morning to see if he had gone back home or was still with me....he was hit some time last night & is now sporting a swollen back leg with a lot of hide missing. He let me get close, but I didn't dare touch him. I don't think it's broken. I have notified the shelter that I have him in case his owners are looking for him & I posted on FB.

My question is what can I do for him if he won't let me load him? Should I try to hose off the wound if he'll stand for it & is there anything I can give him? I hate that he's outside in pain, but I don't want to get bit. I haven't had to treat a wound like this on a dog & not sure if he'll even let me do anything.

Can you give him some Previcox for pain? Stuff it in a weenie or something?

If you think he is owned by someone looking for him, I would worry about giving him meds in case they hold you responsible if there is a bad reaction.

Can you have animal control pick him up so they could at least treat him, or call a local vet and see if they would help?

If he will let you know him and touch him without biting you, I would at least look at his wound and help him by cleaning it.

Well we went to the vet....there was no way I could just not do anything for him. His leg has some of the worst road rash I've seen. It's just nasty, but on a good note there's no broken bones!
A local animal group here in our county helped me raise the funds this morning for his treatment :)
There was no way I would've taken him to the shelter here....they point blank told me I could, but with his injury that he'd most likely be euthanized. No way. The vet said he is the best tempered dog he's seen & he didn't even whine or flinch when they were treating him. They said he should be pretty much healed up in about 3 weeks. I have to change bandages every 3 days, cold hose & give antibiotic.

I'll continue to try to find the owner, but for now he has a good place to recover :)
I was just so leery this morning about treating an injured dog I didn't know. Even the nicest animals can turn quick when in pain.

Good for you for taking care of him and keeping him with you.      No way would I take one to the animal shelter or humane society either.

Thanks everyone :)

I'm glad it wasn't worse & he's being a great patient! If no one claims him, he will have a forever home here with us!

I just want to thank you and say you are an angel for caring for the dog.
