I recently changed my feed program back to oats & flax. I would like to hear some opinions on a good viatamin/mineral supplement to add. I have used purina 12:12 in the past, but looking for other suggestions. Thanks!

I use the Equimin.

Is there anyone who can honestly say there is a real difference in BASIC loose vitamin/mineral supplements?  I know there a plenty of higher powered or specific formulas available, but for your everyday loose vit/min?

Thank you.. I guess Im not looking for anything that will make them "hot".. I want them to have energy that they need.. but not so much they cant focus and are lunatics. I guess I can always just give it a try... it has an easy price tag..

I fed this one horse red cell one time and he lost his mind on that stuff!! I don't want anything like that. Although I don't believe it was the red cell per say.. but the horse.. cause he would have weird reactions to different feeds. He could not eat Safechoice perform either.. or sweet feed...he just went bonkers!

Thanks for your input!!

I have only ever tried the purina loose mineral.. which I why I posted this.. looking for other ideas and input I guess. I guess they (my horses) looked good on that.. but they didn't always eat it either.. so maybe my reasoning was to see what else is out there that is more bang for the buck...with out wasting stuff..

I made the mistake of buying loose minerals from tractor supply. it looked like gravel from a driveway!  NO I am not exagherating. using usgs grain size chart 0 to (-2) phi  units. that is past coarse sand and into the pebble category!

I have had GREAT results with our local Farmers Co-op loose horse minerals. Its only $13 per bag which lasts forever....seems like I only buy about 2-3 bags per year for 4-6 horses. One of the reasons I like it so well is that a few years ago I quit feeding it(just ran out and forgot to get more) in the middle/end of the summer when the heat/sun was at it hottest/brightest and within 2 weeks their coats went from being shiny and DARK and dappled to burnt, dry, and faded out. I know it had to be from the lack of the co-op minerals because nothing else changed during that time. But...just because I like to experiment, I am now using DAC Orange minerals. I have only been using it this winter so I don't have anything good or bad to say about it yet.

For those of you that feed Equilix - I am wondering what you think of it? I just put my 2 geldings (outside 24/7 and free choice hay and get ridden 2-4 times per week right now) on it and they finished a 50 lb tub in less then 4 weeks!! I'm just wondering what your thoughts are and what benefits you have seen!

4 weeks is good!  Mine ate theirs in 4 days, got another and it was gone in 10 days!  Eek, too expensive for me to feed anymore, I have one that when he's bored he just licks.  I recently heard about Stateline tack vitamins, and so far, I like it.  The regular has biotin in it which isn't in many other general basic supplements.  They sell a hair/hoof formula too but when I compared the ingredients there wasn't much difference and the regular is relatively cheap.  With the discounts /shipping specials I can feed all 5 of mine for about $1 a day a bag is about $16-18 and is 5 pounds they get 1 oz per day so 5 head go 16 days.  I have fed it for about 2 months and see no ill effects, they are certainly shiney under their winter grime so they must be doing ok.  Plus its a small scoop pellet that goes on their feed, that way they all get it daily, no overeaters.  I really would like to feed equilix but I can't get mine to eat the loose (except 2 they will eat anything) and the tubs just about broke me.

So, here's my 2 cents on all of this. I too am like so many and need a bang for my buck because I am feeding more than I probably should, with all our retirees and all lol. I like the VitaStress company. You feed a little 4 oz scoop once per day. It's just vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Nothing to hype your horse and is manufactured in Washington state. It's about $90 to freight a 50lb bag to you and let me tell you that lasts a long time. The vitamin helps them digest what you are already feeding and I have found that I don't need to hide it for them to eat it either.

it has vitamins, minerals, amino acids and electrolytes. Has a money back guarantee and is used by top Olympians and TB trainers. You can feed a horse for less than 95 cents a day.

I absolutely LOVE my EquiLix tubs!!! I have noticed that initially they go through a 50lb tub way quicker then the 125lb ones. We had a mare that almost ate a 50lb tub all on her own in 3 days!!! Had to put her in with my guys and my 125lb tub a few months ago (she hadnt been on equilix for at least 3 months) and she didnt attack my 125lb tub like she did the 50lb one. In my opinion, for the $20-$30 difference and how quickly they will initially go through it to get it in their system, its more cost efficient to get the 125lb tubs.

My guys ran out about a week and a half ago and i didnt realize until a few days ago. Their coats are duller and coarser, the hard keeper is loosing weight, and i swear my yearling gained 5lbs every day. lol. Unfortunately are closest supplier is 2 hours away so i was stuck getting a 50lb tub which feels like a waste to me. Especially with 4 horses eating off it. lol

I feed the EquiPride to my three. They also get grain and hay. But this is what I was told by a feed dealer. Your feed should have all the vitamin/minerals needed if you are feeding the right amount of feed. I know mined looked and felt better when I was feeding them the EquiPride. I also tried the Equilix and they went thru the first tub OK, but they just didn't do anything with the second tub so just went with the EquiPride. Now if I had horses on strictly pasture and didn't feed them grain, just grass and hay I would go with the Equilix. Just my opinion.

I have a 125 lb tub for 4 horses, have fed it for over a year, and if I remember correctly they went through the first tub in about a month to a month and a half. Now the tubs last us almost 2.5 to three months. Its nice because I know they are getting what they need and I don't have to worry.
I've seen improvement in their hair coats, hooves, digestion, & focus. I don't grain my horses, but they get super nice grass/alfalfa mix hay and with this supplement they all look and feel great.

I just noticed you live in ND, what part? I am in the Bis/Man area and we have a new dealer. I can give you her name because she sells the tubs for a great price:)

you can also get it as a top dress, then you can control how much they are eating so that they don't eat it all at one time
