Hey

I am currently feeding my mare Buckeye grow n win and was going to be starting her on the Buckeye trifecta shortly. We recently got a Tribute dealer in our area and I am wondering what everyone thinks of Tribute and what they are feeding their horses from the Tribute line? I have heard it is a great feed but am unsure which direction to go.

Thanks so much for any help!

Tributes nutritionist Dr. Dan Burke use to work for Bukeye, along with several of their sales people.  I feed Tribute to 20 horses and am VERY happy with it.  The three main feeds I feed are the Kalm Ultra for the horses that are preforming and being used, Kalm N EZ for the horses that don't get much use and they all get the Essential K.  or  Essential K GC (with the Glucosamine, Chondroition Sulfate and MSM in it).  I've had some people up around me who have been Buckeye feeders for years, after some research and trying it they have switched to Tribute and are VERY happy with it.  Dr. Burke has so much knowledge and he doesn't push is product on you, the entire staff at Kalmabach (which is who makes the tribute feed) has been absolutely wonderful and helpful to work with.  Making the switch and becoming a dealer was a very big step for us, and I'm happy we did! Sent me a message if you have any questions that maybe I can help you with.

Thanks for posting, I haven't heard of the Tribute grain before. I feed Buckeye EQ8 = and I really like it - would theTribute grain be very similar to that or a little different? Is it as expensive?  I pay around $26 per 50# bag right now.

We are becoming Tribute dealers it looks like a great feed and I can feed it cheaper than Triple Crown which is the only higher end feed we have here.

I feed Tribute. The 1100 lb. easy keeper Paint broodmare (open) gets 1 lb. of Essential K 2x's a day and free-choice 1st cutting grass/timothy hay. This feed is comparable to Buckeye's Grow-n-Win. Around $26 a bag I think. You can get it with joint supplement added too. The other mare I barrel race (1000# Appendix QH) is the farthest thing from being an easy-keeper and she is on Kalm-N-EZ pelleted. Around $14 a bag. She gets 2# 2x's day if she's not competing and can get 2.5# to 3# 2x's a day depending on the amount she's competing/traveling and gets free choice hay. I LOVE this feed and have no interest or need to change to anything else.

Don't let the "Kalm" in the feed names throw you off...this only has to do with the name of the feed manufacturer, Kalmbach Feeds, which makes the Tribute line of feeds.

I actually used to sell Buckeye Feed way back and was a huge supporter of theirs for about 20 years. Great company, great customer service, great quality feed. Then one day BOTH of my horses stopped eating their grain. It was a brand new bag. I called Buckeye with the lot number to ask if there were any known issues or other complaints and the lady had no idea and gave me the impression she didn't really care. Now, that wasn't the service of the Buckeye Feed that I used to sell. Customers used to be able to call them with the lot number to discuss their issue. Instead of her being friendly and redirecting me, she just said she couldn't do anything for me. When I questioned that, she told me to call the place I bought it from. So....I happened to get a phone call later that day from a close friend of mine. I told her what just happened. She also fed the same grain and told me her horses did not eat their breakfast that morning. New bag too, but bought from different store. That made me very concerned. So I rebagged all of my grain I dumped in my bin (fun!) and toted it all back to my feed store. Thankfully, they were gracious enough to take it off of my hands without hesitation. When I told them of my experience and my history with Buckeye, he informed me of several negative changes they have experienced since they were bought by Mars. I told him I was so disappointed that after 20 years, I was considering changing feeds. That's when he told me about Tribute feeds and I've been feeding it ever since. So, the feed dealer did right by Buckeye by taking my feed back, no questions asked, but Buckeye had no explanation for why our horses stopped eating it and didn't really seem to care. That bugged me. A lot. We joke about my one mare and sometimes call her "Hoover" because she will eat anything and never leaves a scrap of food behind. When SHE doesn't eat something, then something is really wrong. This all happened about 4 years ago or so. Maybe a little longer - I'm bad with time.

Thanks everyone! It definitely sounds like it will be a better choice feed to go on. We are going to speak with the dealer this weekend. I'm still confused as to which one I should feed my mare, out of their line so hopefully the dealer can help with this. I like the sounds of the Kalm Ultra and the Essential K Plus
