So my vet came to see my mare about her possible bowed tendon, and thats not what it is. But it is a windpuff in between in tendons and a swollen sheath.. The swelling has no where to go because of where it is. So he suggests stall rest and sweat wrapping ect.. which I have done before but I have never kept her in a stall constantly with only hand walking,
SO my question is How do you keep horses on stall rest from going crazy? I know put things in there to play with ect..
She isnt super high strung but she has always had energy and loves to run and buck and play.. she has to have butte twice a day with her grain also.. I am going to be mixing it with beet pulp also...

Thanks for reading!!

slow feed hay nets, salt/ mineral licks, toys.... that's about all I can think of. Knock on wood I've never had to keep one confined to a stall for long.

Ditto to the slow feed hay nets. I actually rigged my gelding's stall so that I could put a round bale beside it and he could eat hay all day. He does go through them pretty quick for one horse, but at least I know his gut is moving all the time and he's not going crazy with nothing to do.

The slow feed net is a great idea... I dont know why I didnt think of it lol.. I may have to also rig something in her stall since I board her and there is nothing in the stalls yet.. and she is kinda skinny so im assuming she will eat like a pig any way...

Cut their grain and Reserpine (anti-psychotic drug) - did wonders for my horse that was on 6 mos stall rest.  He was C - R - A - Z - Y!!!

Personally, I hate stall rest.  I don't do it.    My horses are unrestricted and I've never had a problem with healing.  I've had popped splints, bowed tendons, a super slice from catching their leg over barbwire fence, etc.  I wrap, I soak, I medicate, but I don't confine.   I feel like being able to move around forces bloodflow into the area to help with healing.  This is personal preference, but it's worked over and over on multiple horses for me.

Edited to add, I've had horses with windpuffs as well and exercise takes the fluid out of them.  I'm not sure how standing around would be better.

If I remember right.. I believe her first post said her horse was also lame... windpuffs don't normally make a horse lame, so something more must be going on.  Did your vet ultrasound the area to be absolute in no tendon damage?

Man, I hate stall rest too! Mine are out 24/7 so when one of mine got hurt and had to be on stall rest, I hated it. I had no choice because mine was in a cast and moving too much would make it worse. I've heard so many stories of horses healing and then re-injuring themselves playing in the pasture, so I'm super paranoid about turning my horse out before the vet gives me the ok. Mine is in a SMALL turnout so he's not cooped up in a tiny stall, but I can't wait till he can be back out in the pasture.

Excellent point...more hay and less grain. For a long time mine got just enough senior feed to keep him happy, but I kept it at a minimum.

I dont think there is a way from making one go crazy. I had a 2 year old on 4 months of stall rest due to a barbwire cut, and I did a slow feed hay net with one of those Uncle Jimmy hanging oat balls. She was still crazy though!!

There is nothing magical about being in a stall.  And a horse can do more damage to itself pacing and acting the fool from that confinement than it helps sometimes.  Sounds like yours could be one of those.  They are a herd animal and crave movement and the company of other horses.  What we would do would be to make/set up a small pen with a shelter on the most flat/level ground we have.  They get hay and a buddy.  Enough area to move around more...but not really get up a head of steam.  Flat ground puts less stress on tendons than hills/rocks.

Are y'all really on here telling this person to ignore her vet, who has actually examined the horse, and not do prescribed stall rest? Tell me that's not what you're suggesting. Tell her to get a second opinion from another vet, don't imply that she just needs to ignore her vet's instructions.

We are on month 5 of a "3" month stall rest. She tore her SDFT and after 3 months was still off X rayed and it started to calcify. :(. She is a hot mare anyway. Mare Magic religious hand grazing and as stupid as it sounds hand walking her around the barrels has settled her down. She loves to work and giving her that "job" has taken her from a wall climbing idiot to my 5 year old daughters daily "chore". She has 1-3 more months to go. Vet seems to think she will make a full recovery as the calcification isn't close to the joint. FINGERS CROSSED.

Im sorry I havent been able to answer .... she has a windpuff between the two tendons in the back leg and also one of those tendons is strained causing the swelling from the windpuff and the fluid to have no where to go.... She is lame and has been since I rescued her.. she has always had the windpuff and I have got it to go down alot to where she was fine but now she has re injured it... vet says no exercise and stall rest and we will talk again in a month and see how she is.. and possibly do some cortisone shots..

Wow peoples...... I hate to keep horses up, they need to be out to be healthy.....that said, if my vet says stall rest then I follow instructions to the letter.  Extended stall rest can be tricky, but its doable.  If the vet says I can handwalk, then I religiously do it.  I've had horses that needed a bit of pharmaceutical help to get thru it, but ****it they wound up sound.  If he says its OK, then hold her and let her graze as much as possible.

Strained Tendons need stalled. so please follow vets advice.. short walks .. is all.. in a month reevaluate it and then possibly a confined area.. but its not to be taken lightly.

put milk jugs up, extra hay.. reduce grain if any at all.. they also have those candy apple things you  hang and they lick all day...lots of attention .. good luck.. with her.

My understanding is there is localized swelling in her leg, that is causing strain on the tendon. There are drugs that can be injected into the area to reduce the swelling immediately.

There are too many structures in the leg, did the vet do an ultrasound?

I would take the horse to another vet and get another opinion

I understand your problem. My mare is a nightmare if she is put in a stall for more than a few hours. like the other person said a slow hay feeder will keep your horse busy, hopefully!

I wish I could explain it the way my vet did.. No ultrasound but he spent a lot of time with her and he has seen her before for something similar... I trust my vets conclusion and I am going to be doing cortisone shots once I get paid ... I just cant afford this all at once ... I am going to be sweat wrapping it on and off for now and see how she is doing in a month ... and yes I do know how to sweat wrap lol

I encourage you to get an ultrasound before letting a vet inject a steroid. Cortisone can cause joint deterioration and it does not promote healing, it does reduce the inflammation but suppresses the immune system to prevent healing.
