Hello All,
Forgive me if there is already a thread on this, but I couldn't find one. I'm trying to do a bit of research on Renew Gold horse feed. It sounds like a great product but would really like to hear about others experiences using it. I have a horse with PSSM who also tends to colic at the drop of a hat and I'd like to switch her to it but I'm hesitant... Any advise?

Thanks!

I fed it and love it. I feed a lb of triple crown sr with it a day also. Call the Company and ask for Wynn. He is very knowledgeable and can help you with a feeding program .

I really like it. The only issue I have with it is the ratio of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids is backward; although, I also feed THE and that balances it out. I really like the fact it's not a grain product that hypes my horse up

I have a hard keeper/ulcer prone/picky eater and he's never looked better. I give source minerals and Oxy-Max on top with a very high quality alfalfa. I'm extremely happy with the product and his temperament has even changed. He's a little more level headed and focused. My son's rope horse is 15.2 and weighs a whopping 1300#s, 1lb of renew has him looking better than ever and it sure as heck cuts down on the feed bill.

I'm on my second bag and my horse looked great before starting it so I haven't seen a difference. Haven't decided if it is worth the expense since I only fed a pound of Triple Crown Senior a day so it is now more expensive feeding the Renew Gold.

Thanks for the input!! I am looking to get my horses off grain completely as solely on to Renew Gold, along with my supplements, Formula 1 Noni, mineral salt, redmonds conditioner and Equine Performance Microbials. anyone know the best way to switch them over?

I just stopped all the other grain when it ran out and I fed 1 cup 2x a day for about a week then worked into 2 cups 2x a day (3 cups is 1 lb) I feed that extra cup because I have a couple really hard keepers that needed to gain quite a bit. When they get through all their health issues, I'll back them off a bit.

I have 4 horses and all 4 rejected it at first. I have one on it now and he eats it now. It has only been a couple of weeks so I too will be evaluating his progress. He's a very high strung horse so I'm hoping this feed helps calm him a bit. I love the fact that I have eliminated the molasses from his diet!

Ive been feeding 1.5 pounds to my barrel horses and have seen a huge change! My older gelding has filled out his topline and has become a different horse to be around in general. Calm in the alley and just nice to ride! I add a pound or a 1/2 pound (depending on the horse) of Impact 10-10, and their oxy max. They look better on this than they did when I was pouring other good quality feeds like Ultium into them.

I had Tractor Supply order me some for my mare with soy allergies.  It's supposed to be here today.  $29.99 a bag   I'm going to test it out on her  and my old mare and see what we think.

It comes in a 30lb bag so feeding 1lb a day would last 30 days.

I'm really surprised they ordered it in for you.  Typically corporate won't let them do that, but maybe due to the high volume of requests they have decided to make it available elsewhere.  I have been able to get it, but i'm paying $40/bag.

Here in Texas, and the quality of the hay in my region being marginal, I did have to add in a feeding of soaked alfalfa pellets as well.  I haven't seen a dramatic difference in how my horses look, if anything I had a few drop off before adding the alfalfa pellets, but i'm hoping with the addition of that, I see the results i'm hoping for.  I do like the philosophy behind this product and hope it works for me.  Sure would like that $29.99 a bag vs. the $40 i'm paying now!

The company I work for also sells TSC.  Basically the stores aren't in charge of ordering for their individual stores.....all of that is done at HQ and all items are shipped from a DC.  The store managers typically don't have the power to special order specific items into the store if the items aren't on the model.  That's why i'm surprised they were able to get it in for you.  Glad they did though....your TSC is way better than ours, as ours is always out of stock on anything I need!  HAHAHA

Thank you for explaining!  I work in Supply Chain Management for large oilfield projects so I understand how it is stocking things from store to store, but I can order anything I need for any of our locations.  I just assumed that TSC would be the same way.  I told them that I had no problem paying up front if needed, they just asked how much I wanted and told me when it would arrrive.

I haven't been terribly impressed with the employees that work in that store when I have gone in, but the gentleman that I spoke to on the phone was very helpful.

The TSC stores in South Dakota are the same way.  They say its on a trial basis in certain parts of the country.

They are the same nationwide.  They have different store "models" across the country that determines what will go in each store.  If an item isn't on the model, the store manager cannot order it specifically for that store.  If you want to contact someone, it's probably best to call the HQ in Tennessee and express your interest in your local store carrying a certain product.

I guess i am the only one with a "crazy' horse.. :) I decided to try it on my mare and I couldnt get her off it fast enough.. She is pretty laid back. After being on this for 3 weeks, I hated riding her. She was hot and it took her forever to cool down after a run or just being rode.

If your horse was hotter on Renew Gold it is because the improved digestion efficiency means that she is now digesting the rest of her diet to a level that was not happening before. There is nothing in RG itself that would make your horse hotter. If your hay or other additives have a starch and sugar level that was not being digested before, but is now due to the addition of RG, the temperament can change. An adjustment to the rest of the diet should be done in a situation like this. In just about every case, this is a good thing. Energy levels and temperament can be adjusted pretty easily. A call to RG will help you out with this. The office number is 530 934 9300.

I thought my gelding was getting hotter on renew gold but after feeding for two months I am no longer seeing any of those behaviors.  He walks down the alley like a champ to go make his run.  I feed it with 2 cups of soaked molasses free beet pulp and a vitamin and mineral supplement.

Not the only one. I started 3 horses on it.  My 2 very laid back horse went bat **** crazy.   The other one does well on it.  All of them were getting 4 cups a day renew gold and grass hay. The hay is tested and low on sugars

I switched all three of mine about a month and a half ago. 4, 5, and 15. The five year old is huge, and eats me out of house and home, and still needs some! lol. The 4 and 15 year old get a pound of RG a day, two or three flakes of alfalfa, and stand in front of a bale of burmuda all day. The 5 year old gets the same, except he gets 1.5 lbs of RG. All three have really filled out in their top lines. The four year old looks awesome, the 15 year old looks better, and I can't decide if the 5 year old is ever going to look fat....but i'm keeping my fingers crossed. I took before pictures, and about every two weeks....so hopefully we will see some serious changes once they shed off all this fluff from winter.

Finally got my feed store to order me a bag.  Supposed to be in today.  Called to check and they said the truck came yesterday but they didn't get it...  it is back ordered.  Maybe next week!  UGH  This isn't going to work if it is this hard to get.  And it's not like I live in the middle of nowhere...  this is central TX!

The two distributors that service stores in Texas are Nelson Wholesale, and K&K. There is no reason for either one to be out of Renew Gold. I suspect that your store forgot to order it for you.

Grass hays can be low on sugars and still be higher in starch. Often much higher than the alfalfa that many people are concerned about. Once the horses hind gut really starts digesting the starch from those hays it can occasionally lead to an attitude change. The fact that more than one of your horses reacted this way would point to the hay as the issue. You might give the office a call to discuss this if you would like. A grass hay change if practical, or a reduction of some of the grass hay and replacement by a little alfalfa would likely calm the horses to the level you prefer.

They were getting it from Nelson Wholesale.  There is another person in the area that they also ordered three bags for.  I was in the feed store last Wednesday and they said they had ordered it.   Delivery told them that Nelson was out of it.  But again...  would love to give it a try but not if it is going to be this difficult to get!

I have had 4 horses on RG now for 3 months. It's a great product but you will need to adjust things as your horse starts processing their hay and feed differnently. I currently feed alfalfa and coastal without any supplements. My yearling and 2 year old I had to cut back on their hay by 1/2 a flake. The 4 year old and 15 year old started looking very fit so i added more alfalfa and coastal due to work load. Im sure once the pastures come in I will need to adjust things again however the amount of RG stays the same. My only concern is will my 2 year old be getting enough calories when she goes to be started under saddle this summer. I will talk to my trainer and hopefully he will add more hay if needed. Good luck

I have 3 horses on it. 3,3 & 5. They all look like a million bucks but already looked pretty good to begin with. both 3's get 1lb (1.5cups 2Xday) the 5 gets 1.5lbs (2cups 2Xday). My 5yo is a hard keeper. I add THE to the 5yos feed, vits and minerals and specific herbs to each 3yos feed. 5yo gets 1/2 flake alfalfa 2Xday with bremuda hay and the babies get bremuda hay 2Xday.

I called Nelson Wholesale in Brownwood TX and they said that they had 146 bags of Renew Gold on the floor in the warehouse. Clearly not out of stock.

rachellyn80 - 2014-03-25 11:57 AM I had Tractor Supply order me some for my mare with soy allergies.  It's supposed to be here today.  $29.99 a bag   I'm going to test it out on her  and my old mare and see what we think.

I wonder why they would have a problem ordering it?  I just called and my feed is there waiting for us to pick it up today.
HAHAHA

I asked our TSC about getting it and the guy did try. Said it would be a special order and I'd have to pay for the shipping. NOT. I can afford $30/bag, but can't afford $48+ per bag.

i have been feeding this since January 22, mine were on Total equine and had done well but it got too costly and hard to get in my area so I though RG would be a good choice for my crew.
I've had to play around with the amounts I feed to get them were I want them. they seemed to drop a decent amount of weight within 2 weeks of starting this but I wanted to stick with it so I upped everyone to 1.5# RG and 1# oats till I could get them were I wanted. everyone seems to be doing better and I have got them adjusted back down now and also added Forco about 2 weeks ago. I have now stopped the oats.
5yr barrel horse gets 4 cups RG per day with 5# alfalfa and forco and she looks great and running great!
8yr barrel horse gets 3 cups RG per day with 3# alfalfa and forco
19yr retired gets 3 cups RG per day and 3# alfalfa and forco
19 rope horse(currently not doing anything) get 2 cups RG and forco

i didn't notice a huge difference very quickly but now 2 months down the road i really like the feed and its working for me. I love the fact that i can take such a little amount of feed on the road.

i give my feed store a 2 week heads up to order just so i don't have to worry but it took less than a week to have it in stock when i originally started and it comes from Nelsons in Brownwood.

What vit/min is everyone feeding with this?

Thanks Winwillows!  I called my feedstore and held their feet to the fire.  LOL  They were hmmming and haaaaaing when I told them the Nelson warehouse has 150 bags and has never been "out of stock" or "on backorder".  The poor girl on the phone didn't want to throw the order person under the bus, but she did assure me that they WOULD have it next Tuesday or Wednesday when the next delivery truck came.  We'll see....

osu_barrelracer - 2014-03-26 12:59 PM  I switched all three of mine about a month and a half ago.

May I ask where you get your supply from?

Do horses have to be fed 2x/day while on this?  Is it possible to just be fed once a day?

Win was saying you can feed 1x a day, but to effectively make an impact on the gut and digestive system and have it all work as designed, it's best to split into 2 feedings.  Luckily my dad doesn't mind doing it for me while I'm away.

Thanks!  That was my worry!  I have no problem feeding 2x/day, but I hate to ask someone to go out of their way more than once a day if I'm away.
