Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | For years I've been wanting to breed and raise my own baby so I finally bought a breeding at a benefit auction to a really high bred stud.well finally the day came I took her to get bred and I was on cloud 9. My mare never would come in heat so he asked could he give her shots to make her come in and I asked my vet and she said that would be fine. So he txt me Sunday and said she was in heat and should be bred by Tuesday. I txt him Tuesday and he said they were having problems with her not letting him mount but they would keep working on it. He called today and said she still hasn't let him. Said he tries and she just kicks him away. I told him to do what ever he had to do to get her bred. I suggested hobbles. He said he didn't have hobbles and thought they were cruel anyway. I talked to my vet and she said he need to take her to have her ultrasound to see if this is a true heat. I asked him if I called and paid for it over the phone would he take her. He said that was too much trouble. So I mentioned sedation her just a bit and he didn't want to do that either. I finally called him and talked him into hobbling her. About 10min after I got of the phone with him he called right back and told me I just needed to come get her ASAP that he wasn't going to breed her. He said I could bring another mare in her place but I don't have another mare. I asked if my sister could bring hers in mines place and he said no. I asked if he could collect and I would AI her and he said no I just need to come get her. I asked if we could leave her and try in her next heat and he said no. She hasn't even been there 3 weeks yet. I'm so disappointed because I was soooo excited. I had even already picked out name Flying on Angel Wings for a girl or Hadias Little Bully for a boy. Words can't even describe how heartbroken and disappointed I am. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I'm sorry you are having so much trouble, but as a stallion owner, you would be surprised at the stuff we have to deal with. We only live cover as well. So far we have been able to get every mare covered but some that come "gentle and halter broke" are wild as can be.
I can't blame him for reservations about sedating her because if she fell and the stallion went down too, it could break his tool. I'm not sure why he won't put breeding hobbles on, he should do that anyways if he is worried about his stallion. I'm guessing like all the others she is in transitional heat and not ready to be covered. Again sorry for the trouble :( |

Because I kept asking could we try AI next year and he kept saying he didn't know how that would work. I think the breeding should be honored for at least 2yrs in a situation like this regardless of who owns him. |

most breedings are only honored 1 yr or you bring a different mare. Also through Auctions you have to read the fine print, I don't know the case on this one, but some won't honor a re-breed if bought through an auction. |

most breedings are only honored 1 yr or you bring a different mare. Also through Auctions you have to read the fine print, I don't know the case on this one, but some won't honor a re-breed if bought through an auction.
He said he would on a different mare. I just don't have another mare. |

Location: Florida.. | I have to agree with the stallion owner.. he is trying to do this but can not risk injuring the stud nor should he drive mare to vet to ultrasound so it just seems maybe you can go get her and haul her for one to see . it really isnt his issue she wont allow it .. but being a 3 yr old stud he may be to inexperienced and to aggressive in his ways ..for her taste.lol |

Location: Where I am happiest | Contact the auction you bought the breeding through. I would also bet your mare is in a "transitional heat" and not a true reeptive heat cycle yet. Mares who have not been under lights are just now starting to cycle and the first transitional heat is not usually a good breeding heat cycle. |

Yeah I got that. That is just the norm for breeding. What stallion is this? Is there another stallion that you like nearby that you can try? We are about 2 1/2 hrs from a good repro vet so we don't like to run mares to the vet either, but where we live is not the norm. That is why we don't ship semen either. I sure hope you figure something out. If not, save you pennies and buy a foal :) You can sure get some nice ones and pick your color, gender and style. I know it isn't the same, but better than throwing money away if your mare won't settle. |

He's vet is like 5 miles away. I'm 3.5hrs away so that's why I wouldn't take her my self. |

Call the vet yourself and see if he can do a farm call there to ultrasound your mare. |

I may just do that. If she won't breed fine. I can accept that. But what really irks me is that he wants to just give up after just 2.5 weeks. I don't mind leaving her until she's in her next heat but he doesn't want too. Just last week he was telling me how sweet she was and how he hadn't had a problem with her. She's 15 and was my uncles penning horse that he's won tons of money on in TX and OK. So she's very socialized. She got hurt a few years ago and won't ever be anything but pasture sound so she became a brood mare. |
