Mn, Wi and Iowa all have confirmed cases of ehv. Multiple vets have recommended staying home to reduce this disease from spreading and dragging on into summer.

I read where the case in Iowa was not the neuropathic strain but the horse still developed the neurologic disease.  They are now recommending a modification of the vaccine schedule as a result of this.  I'd recommend people to look this up.

From my micro notes over EVH-1, all it takes is a single amino acid substitution to create a neurotropic strain of EHV-1. So for that reason I would be vaccinating for EHV-1. However, there is no vaccine for the neuropathic strain of EHV-1… so there is no 100% protection from EHV-1 no matter what- which is why people need to stay home in those areas!

The only way to combat EHV myeloencephalopathy is management practices-
ISOLATE animals
DISINFECT
restrict movement for a month
^^^this came straight from my microbiology lecture over EHV-1 from Monday of this week.

How Can Lysine Supplementation Help Treat Equine Herpesvirus Infections?By Dr. Bryan Waldridge · May 20, 2011

Lysine is an essential amino acid for horses. In cats and humans, lysine supplementation has been prescribed for the treatment of herpesvirus infections, which can cause keratitis (inflammation of the cornea of the eye) or dermatitis. Shedding of feline herpesvirus in nasal secretions was decreased in cats supplemented with L-lysine, compared to cats that did not receive L-lysine. Equine herpesvirus (EHV) infections are associated with abortion, neurologic disease, respiratory tract infections, coital exanthema, or keratitis. Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) infections can cause severe neurologic disease, and supplemental lysine has been suggested as a potential preventive or treatment for EHV-1 encephalomyelitis based on its use in other species.

In humans, the success of lysine supplementation depends on the dose administered, the amount of lysine and arginine in the patient’s diet, and how well an individual absorbs dietary lysine.
The amino acid arginine is required by herpesviruses for replication. Compared to the proteins that make up the cells of its infected host animal, the proteins produced by herpesviruses contain more arginine and less lysine. Lysine appears to antagonize arginine metabolism by:

1.       Competing with arginine for reabsorption in the tubules of the kidney. This promotes the loss of arginine in the urine.

2.       Increasing activity of the enzyme arginase, which breaks down arginine.

3.       Supplemental dietary lysine competes with arginine for intestinal absorption. The more lysine in the diet, the higher the chance that it will be absorbed rather than arginine.

4.       Increased lysine competes with arginine for entry into cells, similar to dietary absorption.

In humans, several different doses of lysine have been investigated for the treatment of herpesvirus infections. The success of lysine supplementation depends on the dose administered, the amount of lysine and arginine in the patient's diet, and how well an individual absorbs dietary lysine.

The average daily maintenance requirement of lysine in an adult, 1100-pound (500-kg) horse is 27.1 grams. Apparent lysine digestibility in horses is reported to range from 64-79%. In horses, a dose of 15 grams of L-lysine by mouth every 12 hours has been suggested for EHV-1 infections. L-lysine supplementation may be beneficial for at-risk horses that have been exposed during an EHV-1 outbreak. The replacement of arginine by lysine in cells is gradual, and lysine supplementation is less likely to be effective in horses that are already showing clinical signs of neurologic disease.

If there's a feed mill near you, there's a good chance they would have some if they mix hog rations. I'm in NE SD, and the mill I work at orders it by the ton! In the Sioux Falls area, AgriCare Nutrition on Cliff would probably have some. I think they also have a location in Huron.

Very interesting. I take lysine as a preventative to my chronic shingles. Since shingles is a form of the herpes virus, it makes since. I am going to call and ask my vet, but in case they aren't familiar with this, is there a difference in the compound given to equine? We haven't hauled since the outbreak began, but this is getting way to close to home, and the season is just starting.

Abraham's Equine Clinic
Hello, everyone I want to take a moment to let you know that the horse that tested positive for EHV-1 is a resident of Crystal Creek Stable in Marion. This anim...al was shipped to a farm in Minnesota where it spent one day, then returned directly back home. This horse did not stop at any facilities in Iowa on the way back to the stable. Again, this horse made no stops in Iowa between Minnesota and it's resident stable. Therefore no other horses in our area were directly exposed to this animal except for the horses at this barn. We have requested that there be no horses transported in or out of this facility for at least two weeks . Any questions please contact us at 319-366-6441. ~ Charles Abraham, DVM

From the other ehv thread. This horse was in MN and exposed there. It would appear that exposure once it returned home was limited.

Let's keep in mind that we are talking about 9 horses. Not 90. Outbreak, not epidemic. Deep breathes. Work with your vet. We are immune boosting, going to start on lysine. Taking dysinfectant for our stalls at bonus race and generally being alert and cautious.

I don't advise throwing caution to the wind here, but I'm not sure hiding under the rock is needed either (exceptions being barns that house horses with compromised immune systems to begin with, the very old, the very young, or the recently ill). I like to think we're standing on the rock, looking around, gathering all information and listening to our professional vets.

I'm not a vet, nor have I ever played one on the big screen, these opinions are my own and have been formulated through conversation and consideration with my vet, hauling partner/barn owner and others in the community.

I know there are girls with potentially exposed horses, continuing to travel. Your best bet is to STAY HOME for a FEW weeks like the vets have asked..... Correct this is only an outbreak, but just like any highly contagious virus, it will become an epidemic if we are not careful! I would hate to see this thing drawn out for months into the summer, because of people who think they can outsmart, out disinfect, outplan this vuris's path!

We'll be feeding the recommended dose on the bucket, between 7-10g 2x's a day...

Also, in the comments on the Abraham's Facebook post someone said the horse was in Mn on the 15th and no horses had come or gone since it got home...Abrahams hasn't confirmed, but I thought I'd let you guys know, seems to be isolated

Guys, please don't think that lysine will protect your horse from this strain of EHV-1. I don't know enough to say it does or doesn't work, but I would absolutely not risk my horse getting the neuropathic strain because I think I'm doing a good thing with the lysine. I am sure there are benefits and it probably helps boost the immune system, but the EHV1 neuropathic strain isn't something to play around with for trial and error. maybe the regular strain of EHV1, but not this one.

Is it the neuro type that the others have or respiratory?  Vet told me that neuro has no vacc. and the horse is dead if gets it.  He said he wouldn't let a scare keep him home unless it is in a known outbreak area.  Just follow precautions like not tying on top of each other to keep nose to nose contact at a min.  keep horses tied to trailer instead of in the crowd etc.

This is the respiratory that is causing neuro effects, so basically a mutain strain.

Please stay home for two - three weeks so this can pass so we don't loose our whole racing season, or worse yet, your horse!

My vet swears by feeding lysine, and he uses it to treat horses that actually have EHV along with other supportive care treatments for the disease.
That is good enough reason for me to use it as a supplement.  None of my other vitamin/mineral supplements contain adequate amounts of it and I don't feed alfalfa, soybean meal, ect. and those things naturally contain lysine.
I must supplement it since they don't get it in their diet unless I do.
Obviously people need to use their heads----No one said that lysine used on it's own, it would cure or prevent EHV from happening-- but it's cheap so what is it going to hurt?
I am sure I have spent money on stupider things.

Yes, things like alfalfa and soybean meal are both good sources of lysine.  It's an essential amino acid---something they have to get out of their feed-- or it should be supplemented.
A lot of commercial grain mixes for horses will contain it but I mix my own feed for my competition horses so I have to add it.

I can confirm this horse was in MN and stopped at a location on March 15th. I cannot state much more than that but it is good information. This horse from IA was a pleasure horse, so we longer can be the targets.

This crap is scarying the crap out of me. Our boarding facility has been on lockdown since this started and the owners are doing everything they can as far as precautions go. I think I might look into the lysine just to ease my mind. I hate feeling powerless.

I'm glad I don't board and I'm glad I live in the middle of B.F. Egypt.  My horses haven't been anywhere since November.

Scary part is, a girl I know horse is positive and she also hasnt hauled since November. i dont know any further if they narrowed down the exposure or if maybe it was dormant in her system and some stress caused it to come to the surface or if it came on a vet, farrier, etc.

Its a scary big and my horse hasnt been anywhere since September but days like today you wish you didnt board just because its hard to really watch your horse like you want to and just makes these times more stressful.

The part scaring me is that I know people around here who are continuing to haul. As I keep saying, it's not "your horse" I worry about. It's the horses yours encounter that may be sick and then bring it back to a given area.

I agree. I am extremely frustrated with it. So many people complaining about things being cancelled, postponed, etc but if I never compete again but I know my horse is healthy, ill be much happier than if I risk it and my horse ultimately catches this crap!

I do keep in perspective that 9 horses out of how many in Minnesota have tested positive but I also know that some of those 9 have really been traveling and have exposed a lot of horses.

The risk isnt low enough for me to feel comfortable to haul. I think we can all survive staying home for awhile.

I think the fact that no other horses in the barns of the sick ones have come down with it (unless the vets aren't reporting that).

Seems to be far less virulent than originally thought.

I had a friend with a horse in training at Findlay's western facility when this happened at their English barn back in 2003. http://www.equisearch.com/horses_care/health/illnesses_injuries/her...

We haven't seen this take out entire facilities like that, no where close.

A week now without a new case. I think it's calming down.

That's how it was last time was a week no new cases and then 3 popped up.

Also, I'm not willing to risk my horses health for a few bucks and me enjoying myself. I'll stay home all season if I need to. It's not worth it. I just wish others would keep there butts home for a few weeks.

OhMax - 2014-03-28 9:27 AM Abraham's Equine Clinic Hello, everyone I want to take a moment to let you know that the horse that tested positive for EHV-1 is a resident of Crystal Creek Stable in Marion. ~ Charles Abraham, DVM From the other ehv thread.

What do you reccomend as a disinfectant for stalls at the bonus race? Will a bleach mixture work?

My vet (who is one of the two on-site vets at the BRF) told me that bleach isn't a good disinfectant because once it touches something organic it becomes null. I'm taking something called Tek-Trol, which is a disinfectant that we used to sell to the baby pig barns around here. It's good stuff--anti bacterial, anti fungal, virucide, etc. I actually have 6 gallons of concentrate that have been sitting upstairs for several years because the pig barns changed products. I should bring it and sell it...

Saw the suspected case...at least it's not somewhere new. Sad way to look at it, but it's something.

I've seen a product called Nolvasan recommended for disinfectant in several places. TSC carries a small bottle so I'm going to swing by and pick some up and take a garden sprayer to spray down my stall.

Please consider that just because its not in the news that there is more to this. There is a reason vets are posting public statements of frustration (they likely know more than we do). I know of several cases pending that have shown symptoms in the last couple of days and have tests pending but apparently those are not being reported.

I heard it was at a stable located in Ft. Collins.

I saw this last week, but it was determined that the Ft Collins case was from 2011 or 2012, can't remember. But it was NOT from the current outbreak from what I've understood, and everything I can find thus far concurs with that.
