Location: Tennessee | Curious to see how big everyones 2 year olds are? We have a cutting bred filly that is looking like a yearling still....she is a late May baby but is barely pushing 13.1!!! Do you all feed growth feed? And if so do you think it helps them to mature faster? |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | If fed properly they will only mature what they are supposed to. Since yours is cutting bred, depending on bloodlines, I wouldn't expect much over 15 hands. Most we rode as coming 2's were 14 hands tops. Most matured 14.2-14.3. There were Smart Chic Olena and by sons of his, Highbrow Hickory, Hollywood Dun It, Gallo, Del Cielo, some Duel Peps. |

Location: Idaho | My 2 year olds are still stud colts (gelding to happen in May) - they are both huge! My Dats A Frenchman is so wide and so studly looking, he is so handsome and could be a stud prospect, but we have on interest in doing that! He is about 14.3 in the hip right now. My other colt, he is all race bred, Rare News colt, so he is lean (I like his built), but he is 15hh at the hip, this colt should get to 16hh. I imagine I will have two good size colts on my hands. I don't ride my 2 year olds, but both these colts will spend their summer tied to the posts by the arena, get ponied and probably saddled by late summer. If they are big enough by fall, might put 30 days on them, then turn them back out for the winter. They are way too friendly, I really have to becareful going into their pen because if I am brushing one, they all want to be brushed and petted haha. |

This is kind of better. Anyways, you can tell my 3 year old is more mature looking but my 2 year old is taller....crazy!
Left is 3 year old, Right is 2 year old.

Location: Alberta | My guy will be turning 2 May 6th and he isn't very tall but he already has a fairly thick body. When he his next to my 4 year old who is 15.1 and still growing he looks even shorter. He still has his family jewels so I think that is contributing to his body size. I hope he still grows a lot because his dam is 15.3 and his sire is about 15.1 |

Cow and old foundation bred
Stands at 14.3 HH right now, IMO there is nothing awkward about this filly right now.
ETA: these pictures were taken in Aug 2013 So she was down hill, but she isnt now. I should take some updated ones of her but she hasnt finished shedding out yet.

| My filly will be 2 in late April..she is 14.3 and is all cow bred....she is my first baby and first cowbred and she looks so TINY to me...I have always been use to big 16 hd-ers but my hubby ( who grew up with cow breds) and my vet say she is fine and looks great and can be started.
She ony gets 1/2 scp whole oats and 1/2 scp of a 10% fat sweet feed 2x a day, coastal hay and no supplements. She is a little lighter weight wise to me too but my FIL who has raised a bunch of babys says that it is better to keep them lighter to avoid messing up ther legs with weight issues...

Location: Northern CA | Just bought a 2 year old Nic It In the Bud x Freckle Face Smoke gelding. He seems tiny to me! He measures right at 14, but seems smaller. I have his half brother who is a yearling, and he is already a little over 13, betting he is going to be be bigger as a 2 year old. Also have a 4 year old half brother that was about 14.1 late in his 2 year old year, he is now 15 and built like a brick s***house. It is amazing how different they are. |

With these young horses you do not want them to grow too fast, it will predispose them to things such as OCD.

Her sire's pic is below. Not huge himself (15.1), but a total sweetheart every time I saw him at barrel races. I think he may be 3 or 4 in the pic below. I'm just glad she lost her baby/hay belly. She went long last fall and now starting to go back up a bit. Pardon the mud- it is everywhere and just won't quit raining. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/shadow+ofa+frenchman

| My first 2 year old was 14.2 and matured to about 15.1. He was Dash for Cash x Easy Jet http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/mfr+rajabs+cash
I grew up around cowbred horses, mainly docs prescription, hollywood gold, peppy san horses and they literally looked like yearlings until about 4 years old. They matured really slow. They would grow until about 6-7.
But they were smaller horses usually 14.1-14.3 |

From what I have read from other's post it seems that cutting bred horses mature slower than most running horses. So hopefully that is the case with our filly.... `
