My 4 year old gelding is on Alfalfa cubes and pasture. I'm very happy with his attitude, his coat, and his mind. I just need to add a fat. I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible as I travel a lot and need things that I can get easily in most locations. I've used rice bran (pellet and powder) and had descent luck. I've been suggested oats but all I'm seeing is that they add extra energy not fat. I'm always near a tractor supply, though I'm not a huge fan of them. What do y'all suggest?
Just to add. He's also on muscle up and FORCO

I've never tried it but heard good things about Cocosoya Oil.  I know its available at TSC stores as mine carries it.

How much fat are you wanting?

I would recommend either rice bran OR

Buckeye Ultimate Finish 40 (40% fat)

http://www.buckeyenutrition.com/supplements/ultimate-finish-40.aspx

OR

Buckeye Ultimate Finish 100 (99% fat)

Cool Calories. CocoSoya Oil, Flaxseed Oil. Rice Bran Oil, Flaxseed, Stabilized Rice Bran, Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, are all good sources of fat without the starch.

Oats and Barley are ALL starch. Not a lot of fat. So I don't suggest that route.

Stay away from corn oil or corn itself too.

Nutrena makes a fat supplement that is rice bran based. I think it's Empower Boost or something along those lines. It's 30-40% fat I think. Buckeye's Ultimate Finish products are also nice to use.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. We've used most of those fat supplements but I wasn't sure which were starchy and which weren't.

I feed Hemp ( just a little better than Flax) and it has a high fat content, while being a calming active as well. The mare I feed it too is an absolute hothead, and is terrible to keep weight on, and since I've switched her over to Hemp she's kept weight on super well.

Fat is for sustained energy. Protein is for fattening a horse. Have you tried a quality feed?

Look into Progressive Feeds. They have a fat supplement that has worked wonders, with no energy gain. Its called Envision Classic. Fed it a whole winter to a 25 year old and he looked so nice in the spring. Fed it also to my QH that got lymes and lost a bunch of muscle mass in the back end. It worked great, and you don't need to feed alot of it, just a top dress on the feed.

I substituted bagged feed with alfalfa last year.  They all looked great last fall when blanketed.  Pulled blankets a few weeks ago to start riding and found my hot rod mare just a tad thin.  Nothing alarming, and still had a great topline, just could see her ribs and withers more than I like.  I added about 1.5 C rice bran (MaxEGlow) and 6 oz soy oil to her measley 1 lb of bagged feed.  She has almost filled out back to where I want her again after 3 weeks.  By the end of next week I will back off the amount.  Without the bagged feed there is very little fat and it looks like she will need a little boost.

ETA:  She is not hot at all on this fat.  In fact, she has been being worked on some core training these past weeks and is working calmly and steadily toward being a really broke horse!

My vet said to feed hay and cornn oil. Corn oil helps to put weight on without making them hot. If your horse needs weight increase the amount of hay they are getting. Coastal or alfalfa will work.

That's a negative on the corn oil. Too many BAD omegas, not enough good. There are MUCH better alternatives with a good balance of both. Corn oil can cause more harm than good. Sure, you'll see a fat horse, but it can cause inflammation.

Better safe than sorry.

BOSS. Not just ordinary sunflowers seeds. Some kind can be toxic. Make sure they are Black Oil Sunflower Seeds.
