Narcotics
Kidding. I like Advil. Twist your stirrups with a broom handle so they aren't twisting at your knees. |

Don't forget horse leg protection, Professional's choice or Classic Equine.
Heritage brand Tack set
For you, PHT 3 in 1 leg wraps work for sore knees. You might want a whole set of PHT stuff for your horse too. :)
Bits - I think you'll do fine in your barbwire number. Watch out though, If you are our new 1D idol, if it's custom, you'll have to know the maker so we can all get one ordered. |

| For the knees...... how about some Wall's Slanted/Twisted stirrups? i just got mine last week and though i only had one ride in them i was walking and not waddling when i dismounted!!!
My fav pad is the impact gel out of all of them...i have had it for 10 years and it is still in great condition. My fav bit it the five bit by L & W. you get a bit more control than just a normal O ring snaffle for those young ones. |

Personally, I don't like the CJ pads because I think they break down too quickly. If you are looking for cheaper, Diamond Wool pads are a decent substitute, just get a thicker one. I bought a 1 inch DW that's comparable to a 5 star 3/4.
I use the PHT wraps on my knee and my mom uses them on hers. Mine isn't too bad, she had a meniscus repair on hers and it's worked wonders. We also both use slanted stirrups. Haven't tried the twisted ones because our stirrup leathers aren't stiff. |

See other post....you'll want the best. Heritage Brand.
Actually, I don't know if I'd buy one if I had $600. I probably wouldn't want to use it, they are so pretty! I like my Riata Leather tack set that I added conchos too, that's just as pretty and it cost me around $150 total.
Cinches....I love my Smart Cinches! Neoprene for the early spring shedding season, and felt for the rest of the year. |

I use this Weaver Air Flex cinch on all my saddles. Even my cinchy horse approves of this one! and yes i use the Roper style so it covers a broader area and doesn't have to be as tight.

I don't care for the CJ pads myself. I sold mine. If you want something cheaper, check out Diamond Wool pads. Not terribly expensive and they are decent quality. They wear out faster than a 5 star, but they aren't bad. |

Bits - I think you'll do fine in your barbwire number. Watch out though, If you are our new 1D idol, if it's custom, you'll have to know the maker so we can all get one ordered. Do we not like the Charmayne pads? And, leg wraps are going to fix me old knees??? Are you sure lol? Personally, I don't like the CJ pads because I think they break down too quickly. If you are looking for cheaper, Diamond Wool pads are a decent substitute, just get a thicker one. I bought a 1 inch DW that's comparable to a 5 star 3/4.
I use the PHT wraps on my knee and my mom uses them on hers. Mine isn't too bad, she had a meniscus repair on hers and it's worked wonders. We also both use slanted stirrups. Haven't tried the twisted ones because our stirrup leathers aren't stiff. I was once told the pads Break down easy and the air ride is like a bubble wrap (only a bit different and longer lasting ). I never took the chance on one since. Don't get any ideas and use bubble wrap now though ... I can so see you going that. Bubble wrap!!! What a great idea!! Do it! I bet it will get entertaining when those bubbles start popping. Yeehaw!
I'm sure Man Eater will LOVE bubble wrap....just LOVE IT! |

The crocheted blankets do not wear well, you are better off macrameing one out of old hay string and the color possibilities are superb! I recommend orange, blue and yellow for a sorrel. |

barrelracr131 - 2014-04-01 4:39 AM LRQHS - 2014-04-01 3:26 AM OH, and LRQHS has arthritis in her knees, what can she take for that, so she can walk once getting off of the horse? Thanks. again. Narcotics Kidding. I like Advil. Twist your stirrups with a broom handle so they aren't twisting at your knees.
Ummmmm....Advil is not going to cut it......I need some supplements of some sort......preferably the same stuff I give the horse....
We have given Actiflex to everything, I know people, dogs, cats, and goats that have taken it-YMMV.
I've often thought I should give Mare Magic a try for me and my horse. I am sure many around me would agree. I could probably take up a collection.
Reinsman felt pads are good for the money.
I think you have posted the little sorrel filly before, I love her.

Now why would you want to barrel race?
I'm not NEARLY as far as Texas. You can swing by on your way home.
I have loads of stuff for you. 3 Charmayne James pads you could try.... or throw away for me. All nearly new. Some cut back pads, riser pads, felt pads, thick pads and thin pads. Saddle blankets. A few pairs of bell boots, splint boots and wraps up the yin yang. Probably 20 or so different bits that I've collected over the years. An assortment of cinches from size "fat horse" to "anorexic pony". And 3 sets of tack that are either heavily used, mildly used or not used. We can splash them with some glue and throw glitter at it if you'd like. |

Location: Montana | Hey, I'm going against the grain here...what you need to do is find as much mis-matched, inexpensive stuff as you can... for example a blue Navajo styling saddle pad that was bought from a local tack store, pink Classic Equine horse boots you bought new but on sale because it was a close out color, a red nylon headstall with red nylon reins with a snaffle or Jr. cowhorse bit, breast collar that doesn't match your saddle, etc. That way when they look at you they think you are not a contender, but when you blow their doors off you can be smiling all the way to the payout window. But if that doesn't work for you, just blame it all on ground conditions.
BTW: you won't have worry about arthritis in your knee after you hit a barrel...you will be concentrating on the pain caused by a 55 gallon steel drum hitting your shin bone at about 15-20 MPH...that is, if you are doing it right.

Wow!!! 3 CJ pads......wow.
The real truth is yes, I have to ride my 4, 2 year olds/sell and I am horribly out of shape and, apparently, have no equipment lol......BUT, really, my little niece wants to barrel race........soooooooo, I gave her the 3 year old filly out of my Pritzi Dash daughter by Too Tough to Catch and we are going to go to the barrel race together......which, ultimately, is probably going to be me sitting on Man Eater, drinking beer and watching her lol....but, you never know, I could make the NFR in a year or two. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I love the Bayou West Pads. Yes the are expensive but they are a 100% wool pad and come in a variety of thicknesses. They fit most all horses well.
I like to have a variety of bits for different purposes. I do like the grasshopper bits (or one basically just like it). I also like to have a medium port, short shanked correction bit for most riding, a loomis gag, and a mild snaffle gag with noseband (good competition bit). The snaffle is great and can be used with a running martingale to help them flex. You'll only need the last one while she's two. Moving up into a miracle bit (which can act as a oring snaffle OR act as a short shanked gag) is great as a transition.
Unless you demand a pretty bridle, which is always nice, you can start out with a weaver brand bridle. They hold up and are $20 at tractor supply. They sell matching breastcollars there too for around $30 I think.
Def. get the Professional Choice SMBs, bell boots, and I like the calf horse skid boots for the backs. They usually need them if they are doing their job and getting their butt in the ground.
Shin guards are great. Use the slanted stirrups and twist your stirrup leathers with a broom. Knee braces are good. At the end, lots of bengay and ibuprofen. Ask your doctor about tramadol though, it works great for my aches and pains. Prescription only.

Location: Idahome | I am not kidding that every time I buy a new headstall that is a little fancy (I don't really like a lot of blingy stuff), it gets broke one way or another after about a week. As long as I find one I like on sale, it seems to last forever. They breatcollar I use is one I won about 15 years ago and I don't see it leaving any time soon. I love Wade pads and they have fit every horse I have had them on.
If you are looking for new items, Cool Horse has awesome prices on their stuff and if you sign up for their email then send you a $10 coupon. I just bought a Pozzi lifter bit and it was the cheapest place I could find plus the coupon, I paid $45 including shipping. |

Pads...when I'm rich I'll invest in a 5 star. I currently have a best ever, todd sloan, two Professional Choice regular nothing special western pads, and Classic Equine Bio Fit. Oh! And a BOT western pad. The best ever broke down quick in the shoulders, the Todd lasted a bit longer. The Professional Choices take a daily beating. The CE Bio Fit is for my 'special' mare. And the BOT goes on everyone for daily work.

My theory is YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO HIT THE BARREL! Hasn't always worked for me, but if I protect my legs then I probably woouldn't care as much and would continue in a pattern of doing so.
I rock the miss-matched stuff because I can never decided when I'm at the store what color I want to go with...unless something is on sale, then the decision is pretty easy.
PM me, if you want to, with things you are looking for. I know right now I have an extra headstall, an extra loose ring snaffle bit, extra reins, extra halter...maybe some other stuff too, that I have been trying to get rid of because I am tired of it sitting around. They are all used, but are in good condition and are useable!

On a serious note, you can get rovings of wool and rug hook a saddle blanket.

A nice set of split reins, I don't buy over the Internet, I have to feel them.
Ed wright saddle pads are good, and not that pricey. I would rather invest in a better quality pad as I will save money later on down the road.

RS Saddlery has nice tack and its very affordable. I have a breast collar and headstall from them and its held up great.
I use a Diamond Wool Pressure Relief Pad and recently ordered a Cutter Classic Saddle Blanket.
I agree with getting yourself a good pair of leather split reins. I have a pair that just mold to my hands and I love them. |

| I am going to suggest the CSI saddle pad...
Now at first you may get sticker shock, but here are some things to think about....
This saddle pad retails for about $350.00, BUT it has a reversible felt pad on the inside. So you rotate it every few years....then-when that gets worn out you can purchase replacement felt inserts for only $120...the top part of the pad with the flex plate has a lifetime guaruntee. So this pad costs something up front, but will last you YEARS and the extended cost is much less than purchases an expensive saddle pads more frequently. |

Location: Southern Pennsylvania | I stalk BHW tack sales and Facebook tack groups (and clothing swaps). It is cheaper to buy quality leather tack and add your own "bling" if that is the look you prefer. I'm the queen of finding stuff on sale. $25 MM jeans and a $30 bridle (that's worth over $100) Heck Yeah!!! Also, I'm sure the girls on here won't hesitate to donate. I have a ton of crap lying around. If you need something specific just ask I'm sure someone will have an extra one that they can give you (or sell really cheap)!
Here are a few of my favorite FB groups.

Not if you're one of the cool people. I do.....but wear them under my jeans so everybody thinks i'm still cool. Bout to blow "cool" out of the water this year by wearing my helmet just in case I do this..... Where can you hide a helmet? Under a wig? Get a bigass cowboy hat? Bandana? With THIS!
You have GOT to have the blonde braided pigtails like Bugs Bunny wore on that super fat horse in Fantasia I think? A must with that helmet.
On a side note- I am loving the shealing wool girths, but I did take advantage of the professional's choice sidewalk sale and got two of the other wool girths they offered for about $24 each. Considering the price of the shearling- I thought I got quite the deal on the others. The shearling is softer and has never galled one of my horses (or even so much as pulled the winter/shedding hair off their bellies).
For your knees- I'm going to ask you to think WAY outside the box. I rode in my husband's trail saddle once. It has the goofy looking metal stirrups that have about an inch of rubber on the bottom of the WIDE stirrup. It was the most comfortable ride I have ever had! The second most comfy- when I forgot my cowboy boots when I went to the barn I was working at and wore my muck boots. I didn't even know I was uncomfortable until I was SUPER comfortable. They even make covers that go over the front of the stirrups that keep your foot from going though. I've seen them for sale in valley vet and jeffers equine I think. |

This place is between Opelousas and Lafayette on I49 (I think). I love going there when I'm home for a visit. They have a nice selection of stuff. It's about 1 1/2 - 2 hours from you(?) would be my guess. Nice day trip for you and your niece if there isn't anything @where you live. We don't have any great tack stores near me, so I'm accustom to driving a couple hours to D&D in Seguin for my fix. |

^^^ I ordered my slanted wide with rubber on the bottom stirrups from Martha Josey's website. They are great for bad knees. My husband liked mine so much, we ordered him a pair.

Location: WV | I have have ce bell boots that I can send you. They are a size medium, green, blue, purple stripes and have never been used. I have a cj pad and like it ok, I cant afford to buy another wool pad right now so my fatty has to use it right now. You can pick them up used pretty cheap. Would you not stand out in this though! I like mohair cinches, I do have a 30" cj neoprene cinch that we don't use. Don't forget you 5 gal bucket to get on with and to get off. You don't have to buy a mounting block. Most important thing not to forget HAVE FUN!!!!!!! |
