| Does anyone track their mares from one foal to the next? Do they vary much on the same mare from year to year? Just curious, thanks! |

Location: Gainesville, TX | Well mine went 322 on the last one and 337 on this one. Both fillies. Yes, sex can occasionally impact days. The first one was bigger slightly. |

Location: When you hit the middle of nowhere .. Keep driving | I have had 3 mares with multiple foals. The one mare will always carry at least 2 weeks over her due date regardless if it's a filly or colt and has done so for 5 foals. The other 2 are pretty textbook and always foal within a week of their due dates. |

| I keep a breeding notebook for all breedings and foalings. Most mares keep to a fairly regular routine. However, any mare any year can carry way short, long, or exhibit different behavior. Generally, colts take longer to bake than fillies. This holds true in my book, but can differ with different mares. |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | Our Mr Jess Perry daughter went 367 days with her first Firewater Finale colt, 372 days with her 2nd Firewater Finale colt, and 349 days with her Pablo colt.
I don't know if it's been proven to be true with horses, but cattle gestation periods are known to be hereditary. Most of our FF foals seem to gestate longer than our Pablo babies do so I tend to think it's similar with horses. |

| I've also wondered about the stallion's influence on gestation length.
I keep notes on all of my mares, and I've found that for the most part they will foal within about a 5-7 day range of what they've done in previous years. I used to have a mare that foaled like clockwork at the same day of gestation. But I've also had mares will carry really long one year but then carry a more normal length other years. I've been told that if you breed earlier in the year they tend to carry a little longer, and as mares get older they tend to carry a little longer. And I read a couple of years ago that mares can delay labor/delivery, and I can't remember for sure, but it seems like they said up to 3 days. |
