Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | His "area" after he got neutered yesterday. He was doing pretty good until this evening and I can't get him to stop. Is there anything that I could rig or do to make him stop until I can get a cone? He had a rough day yesterday. He was traumatized because I'm pretty sure he thought he got dropped off at the pound again, he got neutered and a couple teeth pulled. They gave me some meds but he isn't himself at all. I've never had to get a dog neutered that I remember anything about it. I got both dogs done yesterday. One is acting normal and then there is Marty, he is eating soft food and drinking some water but just lays around and when I take him outside he lays down or tries to go back in. I'm sure it's normal but it's making me feel bad. Anything I can do to help him out would be appreciated! Thanks!

That was a good idea!!! Except it lasted about two seconds.....gaaahhhhh!!! He is going crazy. I don't think anything is wrong with it. But he will randomly squeal and then start licking. |

| What kind of dog is it? If you happen to have a shoe boil boot you can put it on his head...or make a cone out of a cardboard box and duct tape. Be careful...if they haven't sutured the area and just used the skin glue, he could easily open the incision and then you will have to go back to the vet. |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | The pepper is NOT a good idea. He will likely continue to lick as the area is irritated and painful. And the pepper isn't going to feel very good on a wound.
He needs a cone. Did they suture the site or use tissue glue? If it is sutured you can put some neosporin on the incision site as that will soothe it a bit. BUT...if they used the glue the ointment could break down the adhesive.
You could also give him some benadryl to help shut down the itching some possibly. And I hope they sent home an antiinflammatory like Previcox or Rimadyl as that will help some too.
But get that cone.

Location: Sperry, OK | you can get some stuff called Bitter Orange from your vet. Put it around the wound and i promise your dog will never lick there again. I can't believe they sent him home without an e-collar.
Bitter Orange is a double strength cream for dogs that is extremely bitter tasting to discourage licking, biting and chewing. Used to protect bandages and wraps from licking or being removed. Used also as an aid in treating lick granulomas. Bitter Orange is used commonly around surgical wounds to help prevent sutures from being chew out.
Directions
Apply to bandages, casts, or hair threetimes daily or as otherwise directed by your veterinarian. Caution
Avoid contact with broken skin, eyes ormucous membranes. If eyes are contacted, wash with waterimmediately. Use carefully as may cause staining. Keep out of reachof children. Harmful if swallowed. First Aid call a physician orpoison control center. First Aid call a veterinarian. Contains
Water, Isopropyl Alcohol (22% byvolume), Oleoresin Capsicum, Sucrose Octa Acetate, Propylene Glycol ,Polysorbate 60.

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Sounds like to me he's in pain, I would call the vet and tell them what is going on. I think he needs something to help with the pain and stinging that is going on. |

I would call. If the tramadol is not doing the trick, he needs a cone.
DON'T put anything near the wound unless your vet tells you it's ok. You don't want to irritate it worse than it already is right now or potentially open the incision! |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | As you can see from the very different reactions of your two dogs...some are just fine...never lick and go on as if nothing even happened. Then there are dogs like little Marty...they act very dramatic about the whole thing and are very sensitive. They lick, chew and make things a whole lot worse.
The only answer for those dogs is to use the dreaded Cone of Shame. No diaper, spray or other means of deterrent will work. It will only need to be for a few days. That will let things calm down and for the tissue to begin to heal.
Where is the incision? Is it on the scrotum itself? or forward of that area? We always did them forward of the actual "sac". The reason being that shaving that tissue is more difficult and it tends to be more irritating to the dog and makes them more likely to lick.
We preferred to give an anti inflammatory (NSAID) vs the trammadol for a neuter. But...opinions differ. |

They do not send many of the animals home with the proper stuff...you get what you pay for. He needs a cone. Period. Pepper is a horrible idea!
Edited to add; But Kudos to you for taking and getting him fixed! You did the right thing! They just fell down on the job by not sending you home with what you needed.

I called them and told them what was happening and they said to get a cone which I already knew! And I could put a little neosporen on the incision to soothe it some.
Thanks for all the help guys. It doesn't surprise me that he is having trouble...he's the problem pound dog lol that's very very dramatic! |

Location: Texas | I would absolutely put an e-collar on him. Dogs will self mutilate. If he starts chewing that area he can do a lot of damage.
In fact, it's the reason why they leave a "flap" (scrotum) when they neuter dogs. if you make the incision through the scrotum they will chew it up bad. |

| We have an aussie who is a BAD chewer...when we got her spayed she ended up chewing her cone off (while we were at work), and chewed ALL of her stiches out one day after surgery!
Our vet lives right down the road....came to our house, put her back under and had to resuture her.
I was a little nervous about her chewing those stiches out... |

Took it off for him to eat and I forgot my bedroom door was open and he booked it to my room where he is hiding under my bed, whining and I can't reach him to get him out. He was shaking while standing to eat soooo I will be calling the vet in the morning to take him in. Gosh this is such a pain. Prayers that he isn't infected and that we can find something to make him more comfortable and feel better. |
