Find a trainer in your area and take lessons. Watch how others ride at the races. You can learn what not to do watching bad runs as well as what to do watching good runs. If you don't have a horse already try to find a seasoned, finished horse-not a 1D horse-one more suited to your greenhorn ability. I started out on a 4D horse. A newbie on a young, unfinished horse can also be frustrating for both horse and rider. Good luck.

I have looked for a trainer there aren't any that can charge a reasonable price and finding a barrel horse here is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack

if you disclose your location, I am sure someone on here can point you in the right direction for a trainer. Thats very important when starting out.

Ask your friend more about the horse and make sure it is a good fit for you. Nothing worse than a horse that is too much or that you just dont get along with.

Watch a lot of races and be observant, ask questions on here if you are not sure why they do a certain thing. Buy videos and read book or magazines.

Make sure you spend the money on appropriate tack and dont settle for cheap. In tack, you get what you pay for.

Lastly, have fun!

Never miss a opportunity to learn. Learn everything you can about barrel racing. Watch video, read books, talk to people, take clinics. I would highly suggest subscribing to barrel horse news. They have tons of good info. If you try you will alway be learning something new for ever how long you barrel race. My trainer is 64 and she says she learns something every times she gets on a horse.

Watch a lot of videos, focus on hand positioning and leg positioning. It's not as easy as it looks. :)

Never pass up any suggestions from anyone, but you don't always have to follow it to a "T". Since this is your friends finished barrel horse, you need to take a LOT of time and have your friend give you lessons on that horse since they know the horse and it's running style.

I read a lot of books. I watch a lot of WNFR runs. I record my runs, review them, and figure out what my mistakes were (it'd help if your friend could record and review with you since it sounds like they have a decent background in barrel racing). Not sure how much riding experience you have, but lessons would be great if you could get them.

And ditto... If we knew your location, we might be able to help a little better. :)

Have you ridden before or is this your starting point?   Either way, I'd look up a trainer, or even someone who had done this for years so they can watch you ride.  Most people are willing to help a new rider.
Work on your horsemanship skills because going fast, you'll need to have some semblance of control of your body as well as controlling the horse.  Hopefully your friends horse will slow down for a beginner rider.  Putting a new rider on a barn burner is a recipe for disaster.

I'm in the same boat. I'm ready to barrel race. I have the horses.....so, I picked the wildest one I have and sent her to be broke (that way if she doesn't work out I can blame him).

Next, I bought a saddle lol.

Then, I posted here about needing the rest of the tack and currently, I am expecting bits and pieces of miss matched things from all over the US and maybe Canada lol. I can sell you what I don't use lol. \

And, finally, I made a goal and that is the beat the crap out of the women in the over 40 category at the Cajun Riding Club......that's right you old coots, I'm coming for you!!!!

I would try to buddy up with someone who has been hauling for a while. It's easier said than done, but worth a shot. Or find a trainer.
