Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I was bummed when I found it, me and Sterling {grandbaby} were out working in the yard all day, cleaning the fish tanks that I have up in the yard so the grandkids can watch the goldfish grow, and just peddling and I walk by this one tree where I have another tank with waterlillys and it caught my eye, it was colied up really tight up against a tree.... |

| We were in Drummond Montana a few years back at a senior rodeo and a couple there said the wife had shot a rattler through the screen door! We thought that was hilarious but what else would you do? |

Location: Florida.. | I have had so many close calls with rattlesnakes , 2 water moccassins and a copperhead. I saw a fawn grazing when I got out of my truck in the side yard area by my woods and I walked over in flipflops.. out of corner of my eye I saw about a foot away if that in a sandy area a huge rattlesnake. all coiled up. I think i surprised him for he didnt rattle asap or id have heard him. I think I lost a few of my heartbeats though that day. I jumped and ran and got my camara.. took a photo then went to grab my pistol and he was gone.. Then one day my Lab was with me by my creek and she jumped in and i had to help her out it was steep.. went to reach down and all i saw was a cottonmouth wide open.. I dont like be surprised at all.  |

I hate that they come up into my yard because of the grandkids, snakes dont really bother me unless they surprise me and I'm with you I dont Like Suprises of this kind..And you know rattlesnakes dont hardley rattle anymore, so we all really need to be carefull of them they dont warn like that did a few years back. |

us too. Hubby found a stick to smash its head. it was about 5" long. the rottie spotted it and stayed a safe distance but alerted us. what bothers me is where are the brothers and sisters.. Yuck |

 You just got to get mean and mean it.
Location: Arkansas | One of my sons, when he was about 13-14 told his Mama that you could tell if a snake was poiseness by the shape of it's scales. I informed him, I'd just do that. AFTER I killed it!  I'm not getting close enough to determine the shape of the scales while it's still alive!
Any snake, whether good or bad, around this old lady is a dead snake!
I'll use mouse trap's to catch mice! |

I was really guessing on the age, but with it being about 17 inches long and its rattle had two buttons on so I was thinking it was around 2 years old the most maybe younger. Heck it might be a year old but ate really good in its young and short life. Right now the june bugs are crazy thick at night arought the lights so it might of been feeding off of them. But this is not my first Rattlesnake and I know it wont be the last, I wish tho. |

Ha ha ha ha ha,,,, I do have busybody hens and they are pretty good snakers, last year they killed 2 baby rattlesnakes and 3 Copper heads that were really young too, these were like a few months old when the hens got awhole of them. This last snake just got by them and the cats and dogs.... I bet it come up during the night to eat bugs while the girls {hens } were a sleep. |

Their saying because the wild hogs are eating the larger Rattlesnakes, so the snakes quit warning so the wild hogs would not find them by hearing the rattle that the snakes make. |

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | OH MY GOSH!!!!!!! And I would not come out of the barn when I thought a gardener snake was in the yard. Lucky for me, it turned out to be a lead rope laying in the grass (true story)  I HATE SNAKES! And sincerely feel sorry for all of you that have to live with rattlers. We have coooperheads & timber rattlers but luckly only ever scene them twice and I perfer to keep it that way. |

mostly by size. Full grown adults (depending on breed within them) will be larger in girth and longer from tip to tail. They will also have fully developed rattles even if they don't utilize them to warn their prey.
The babies that I am familiar with in KS are the size of gardner (? gartner?) snakes ... they'll look more like the girth of pencils to small sticks and be much shorter in length - talking like 12 inches.
HOWEVER ... the uber deadly massasauga's are smaller all the way around. They will prey on literally anything that moves and carry more deadly venom than a standard timber rattler.
I got to learn about these buggers last year when my chickens started disappearing left and right ... I literally thought I was going to pee my pants one day when I walked in the chicken house and looked up to see the little buggers all curled up in the RAFTERS of my chicken house. HOLY MOLEY! Talk about running screaming and yelling for any gun the SO could find so we could blast them!!! wow!
I took a dead one down to the local extension guy who helped me figure out it was a massasauga and then he proceeded to teach me all about the venomous snakes in my area.
ETA - I have been around all sorts of snakes - good and bad - through my life but DANG, I can live without them! :)

I came down the driveway from work yesterday and my husband was trimming trees - he told me he'd saw and shot the first snake of the year. Ugh.
We've had our place for a year now and not real snake savvy - had a VERY CLOSE CALL last Summer after coming back from 8 days at church camp- the weeds were grown up a bit and my husband was moving the grill to mow (we hadn't put in a back patio yet) -- Thank God the grill brush had fallen on the ground (had the scraper on the end) and my husband had picked it up before moving the grill - that was his only weapon against a copperhead that came out from underneath the grill when he moved it - he stepped on it with his (thankfully steel-toed) boot - and YELLED at our dog, who was coming outside through the doggy door to stay back - he said it felt like the snake would triple in size every time it writhed underneath his boot - it struck his boot multiple times - it took all his strength to hold it down and too long to kill it with the grill brush. He was still shaking when I got home later and he told me about it. Thank God the grill brush had fallen on the ground!

With that said, it's only polite for y'all to give the location of your snake sighting, you know? So I can avoid that area specifically?   |

 carry a big stick!!! HUGS and I'm freaked out too b/c my SO just called to say he killed a pile of baby copperheads by our well top thingy. OMG ... freak out time now!!! That is IN MY HORSE PASTURE! GAH!!!!

| While bartending for a dude ranch here in AZ, I put my hand under the fridge to retrieve a baby snake. I thought it was a gopher snake since I had just seen one. Well the head Wrangler walked into the kitchen and freaked out on me...(thank god) anyway I went back to tending bar minding my own business when the Wrangler brought me a gift in a Tea jar. A baby rattler snapping and striking the flipping glass.
"here you go, now you have to work all night with this mad as a hornet snake until you learn your lesson not to put your hands in dark places..."
The tourist LOVED it... I had nightmares for a week.

"Well there's this grove down the legnth of it's fangs...I think it's a galvane's grove but I never get to look because i'm too busy ****ing my pants to tell." |

I'm a native Arizonan and I have only seen a handful of snakes in my life and maybe a dozen scorpions. It's not as crazy at it seems out here. Or I'm just really unobservant. LOL |

So, the week before, they srayed and sprayed and sprayed for bugs. That week, I killed a large scorpien on the wall above my 2 month olds baby bed. We moved within the week. |

I dont think lazy just smarter, last fall when I went to put corn in the deer feeder there were some hogs running off and one of them had a snake in its mouth, I dont know what kind of snake it was but I can tell you it was hog food,lol |

I thought it was a gopher snake since I had just seen one. Well the head Wrangler walked into the kitchen and freaked out on me...(thank god) anyway I went back to tending bar minding my own business when the Wrangler brought me a gift in a Tea jar. A baby rattler snapping and striking the flipping glass.
"here you go, now you have to work all night with this mad as a hornet snake until you learn your lesson not to put your hands in dark places..."
The tourist LOVED it... I had nightmares for a week.
"How do you age a Rattlesnake?"
"Well there's this grove down the legnth of it's fangs...I think it's a galvane's grove but I never get to look because i'm too busy ****ing my pants to tell." Ha ha ha ha,,, I bet you dont reach into dark places anymore after that,lol. Out here I am always checking twice befor I reach under something. And another thing I really hate and they hurt like the dickens when they sting you is those darn Scorpions.
Born and raised a Texan and I have seen plenty of both. Been to a few of the Rattlesnake roundups and you will will see tons of them. I dont do them anymore, I feel bad for the snakes, I know I'm weird, but hate seening all those snakes that or going to be killed for the fun of it.
Now if they are a threat then I have no problem killing one. Now the Scropions I kill them all, I HATE those things. They are EVIL.....LOL.. |

So I have to ask about the scorpions how bad is the sting? Do you have super lethal ones or just ones that hurt like a bad spider bite? We once had a big black king scorpion at the pet store I worked at but his sting wasn't bad. |

Do you have super lethal ones or just ones that hurt like a bad spider bite? We once had a big black king scorpion at the pet store I worked at but his sting wasn't bad.
Oh they hurt like He** and the sting will last all day, they will give you a weird taste and my lips will get a tingle and get numb if its a bad sting. These Scropions like the sandy soil and we have plenty of them during the summer months. |
