I went out to feed today and was petting my mare when I noticed small yellow bugs on her. There were just a few but enough to catch my eye. First thing I thought of was lice. I have never had a horse with lice and not even sure what I saw is lice. I wish I had a pic to share but didn't take one. She's with 3 other horses so I'm sure this is going to be a long process. I took in some donkeys around January that had showed up at my place and the owner didn't want anymore. Me being a softy, fell in love, and decided to keep them. Now I'm thinking she may have got these bugs from them. :(

If you have a Fleet Farm or Runnings or some other farm supply store near you, you can get some powder to treat the lice.  The directions are on the powder but I think they recommend treating twice.  It is not very expensive.  Also make sure you wash blankets, brushes or anything else that you use on infected animals so you don't spread it around anymore.

Liquid ivermec will get rid of them too...10cc I think is what we gave to a horse that had it once...not the horse wormer but the cattle wormer...can give it orally..lice will be gone within a day or two...

Ok sounds more simple than I thought. W?e have tractor supplies here so after work that's where I'll be. Does it sound like lice? I have never seen them on horses before. Should I go ahead and treat the whole heard?

Horse ivomec works too (as per my vet). Deer, cyotes, etc can also spread lice. Repeat in 14 days after first dose.

I also get the dusting powder, and when the warm weather hits, I bathe all of mine with a stock pest shampoo whether they need it or not.

Also donkeys are susceptible to lung worm, I would suggest dosing them a little heavy with ivomec, I lost one of my minis to this a month ago.

Sounds like lice, and yes treat the entire heard

The horse Streaker that RodeowithJoker has is the one I rescued- he was COVERED in lice amongst a herd of 300 horses. They typically attack a thinner or weaker horse. I already had him at my house before I discovered the lice (thanks to Aceinthehole--lol)-- anyhow- I did the ivermec and the powder (cant think of the name?) and a pour on safe for horses. You have to treat like 2 weeks then again- takes almost 21-28 days to get thru the life cycle. We keept him isolated from common fence lines, touching ect. It was AWFUL but we got thru it.

Ivermec will only get rid of the sucking kind of lice not the biting kind. So dont depend on ivermec as your only treatment. Permectin has a concentrate to mix and spray, also treat your ground. Good luck, lice suck.

I have only seen them a couple of times but an ivermetin dewormer and a fair amount of fly spray killed them and they did not return.
