I ran barrels for the last time in 2007 on Bender.

Today, I took Tres to the local arena and made a run.  He totally babied me thank goodness and I didn't fall off.  I almost did not make it up the alley though................in fact, it took me two tries before I could ask him to do more than slow lope.

I got bucked off a year ago and broke a bunch of bones, so now I am looking at back surgery. I guarantee you, when I'm cleared to ride again at more than a walk, I'll only trot around the barrels if I have enough courage to even do that.

Congratulations!!!

You are right, but this is the issue I have.  I used to be a decent rider.......now I am fat and don't have a finished horse.  I don't want to go and be 5 seconds off, but if I don't start SOMEWHERE, I'll never go again...........

I'd bet a lot of money you looked a lot better than what you think you do.  If it takes baby steps than take them.  It will do your heart good to compete again.

Don't feel bad Tia I'm in the same boat as you!  I haven't competed in 10 yrs until last summer!  I use to be a 1d rider in my teens. 2 kids later I have to stand on a bucket to get on!  Last summer I trotted my daughters horse around the barrels because my horse that I got in Dec of '11 has been lame etc. finally got her figured out now. She is 5 and we are going to our first show tomorrow!!  We won't do more than canter an exhibition. I'm scared to death!!

LOL, I've  been using a step, but today, just to see if I could, I got on the old fashioned way.  It wasn't pretty, but I made it up.

Same boat!! I went last Sunday for the first time in way too long. I got there too late to exhibition, so I had to ENTER! Oh my goodness, I can't believe how scary it was to enter the arena. My old man took off and I just held on for dear life! The worst part is, I felt like we were going so fast...and we really weren't -lol! That really bothers me because I used to be pretty competitive.

I told hubby, I would give anything to have a video of that, because I don't remember a thing! But no way was I going to draw any attention to myself by asking them to video, I was trying to be invisible.

Tia, I am SURE you didn't look near as bad as you think.  And I agree, get off your rear and enter up!!!  All you will do is get better and I KNOW you will have FUN.  YOU DESERVE IT!!!!

I would give you back Grasshopperif I could.  Quite frankly the dang horse is about as sound as he was before the accident, the freak.  Though it sounds like Tres is taking care of you just fine.  That horse is super cool....

I am getting there!!!  He actually has stayed on the cheap since we got the all clear.  He likes to jump in the trailer, not step in it, and I swear one day he is going to miss the back of it.  Yesterday I said I was going to laugh at him and then I stopped myself because knowing him, he would slice his whole leg open and we would be back at the vet.

Seriously though Tia, get yourself in the arena more.  It will do your soul some good.  :)

Yay!!  Congrats to you!!  I stopped running barrels in 2006 and now I'm looking for a horse to get me back into it... i know I'm probably going to be rolling around like a sack of potatoes when I try to do anything more than a trot again!  Please keep me posted!  This is inspiring!

Awesome!!!

I've been riding again after some years off, but not consistently. Found me a finished horse, that was a back up horse, not too fast, but she still scares me some.

Great job getting back in the arena and just remember every time you do it, there are a hundred others of us that are riding with you!

I am also in the same boat...used to WIN stadium jumping events. 15 years and 90lbs later (lost 50 of the 90) and I have to start somewhere. I have never ran barrels until 2 years ago...we all have to make a comeback somewhere. Good for you for just getting out there. There are a lot of people that are too scared to even try. So congrats!

I didn't fall off and I didn't hit any barrels.  Don't know what won it as I was # 5 and left, but I feel as if it's a good start.  Bought a pussy willow on the way home and I need to go plant it while I can still move.  I'm afraid I used a few muscles today that I forgot existed.

Sorry for changing the subject.....but......pussy willow (doesn't really sound all that nice) caught my eye.  What is that and I know it is some sort of tree probably knowing you.  Guess I have never seen one.

Good for you Tia! You know dang well that even on your worst day, you can still ride dang well! Sure, it will take some time to get your timing and fitness back, but just like with the horses, we can't get back to being sharp without making the runs. I'm going to bet that a couple of really cool things happened today. 1) I guarantee that you had a big ole' smile on your face while you were patting on Tres back at the trailer after your run. 2) I also bet that you got him to that sweet little spot that lets him turn that 2nd barrel so nicely.

Keep it up Honey. Lord knows you deserve to be out there enjoying it all again!

Just get on and do it! Go at the speed you feel comfortable at. I broke my arm in 2011 and it didn't heal for 14 mos. and two surgeries. I put on 20 plus pounds but I was determined to get back at it and with all the help and support of my great friends and family I am doing it now! Can't imagine my life without my barrel racing and my great friends!

Heres what you do, quit breeding fast ones and ones that can turn around and you'll be fine!!! Besides that as the  saying goes "A trip of a thousand miles starts with one step" or something like that..glad you took that first one and you wouldn't be so dang scared if it didn't matter so much.  Embrace it and go for it!!!
Stacy, I think if you tried to send Hops to anyone he throw himself out of the trailer to spite  you.
