I have had my mare's hocks injected.. and she feels great! but she gets a big wind puff on the left side if she gets worked hard.. is there anything I can do that would help it be smaller? Would Adequen (sp?) help that? Im going to put her on that anyway.. but I just feel like it looks so uncomfortable..
I give glucosamine IM weekly to reduce the inflammation. Legend will get rid of the swelling. Adequen will help long term, but short term I have had better luck with the glucosamine and legend
I ran a horse that had bad windpuffs. We have him glucosamine IM every week and also polticed and wrapped his legs after each run to pull out any swelling.
What I understand about windpuffs (please correct me if I'm wrong) is that it is from poor circulation. My horse is older (18) and has windpuffs. I was giving her THE NutraWound and THE Nitroxide for a tear in her chex ligament. Since you are supposed to give them an hour a part sometimes I would only give one because I would run out of time at the barn and figured one was better than none. Getting to the end of my story, I noticed when I didn't feed NitrOxide her windpuffs would show up but when I did they were gone. Thought it was extremely interesting since NitrOxide is for increasing blood flow. After doing NitrOxide for a month they are gone. She has been off of the NitrOxide for 6 months now and they are still gone. Don't know if it was a combination of both or what. Might want to give it a try for a month.
My guy when I had him had severe windpuff on a rear leg, with how hard the girl was riding him without leg protection on. I gave him 2 weeks off and used DSMO to help bring some of the puffiness down.
Everytime I ride him I make sure that his legs are wrapped never ride without, I currently use the Professionals choice Elites and they work the best. Yes he leg still has that bit of a puff look to it but so long as I keep leg wraps on while working him I have never had a flare up as bad as when I first bought him. For more less is more
I did find this product that I really want to try out to see if it helps bring it down even more. http://www.flexsleeve.com/
