Location: Oklahoma | How much more will a three year old grow? Father is 16.1 and a son of Bully Bullion. He is currently 14.3... a smidge short for me, but I've rode em like that before.... but I had rather not settle on something that short. (I'm 5'9") I know that saddle fitting won't be fun for a few years, but how about height? Any thoughts on how much more he'd grow, if any at all? |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Bully Bullion was short and all but a couple I have seen in person were in that 15-15.1 range and stout. I wouldn't think yours would have a ton of potential to get that tall unless the taller sire seems to sire more that way and the dam is tall as well.
I have a 3yr old that is 16.2 at the withers and 16.3 at the hip and I am hoping he reaches his projected potential of 17.1. I am afraid we are running out of time though. Not sure how much more he will grow. He isn't barrel racing breeding. His sire, at 16.2, produces horses much taller and his dam is 15.3 and also has produced some height as well as her sire. It's sure a waiting game. |

| My son just bought a coming 3 yr old. He is decent bred, old breeding. While he's not bred to be tall, he is currently pony size. Praying he grows or I will have a registered horse that can go into a pony class.
Funny thing is I grew up with a girl that had a registered QH and she was able to ride him in pony classes. He made it to QH world show too. |

| Curious as well.. I have a 2 year old by a 15.3 sire by bully bullion but she is out of a 14.3 cutting bred mare. Now at 2 she is 14.1 I'm hoping for 15. |

His dam is out of Juno Dat Cash are you familiar with those lines? I can't find anything on the dam to see about her height.
I'm hoping the horse that I have that's I say is 14'3" is really like 14'1-2" cause I really like this guy! haha |

| Ive got a gelding that was only 14.2 at 3yr and was 15.1 by the time he was 5. Let him go awhile before ya decide ya dont like him. If he dont get taller I love to heel off of 14 ish horses. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Most continue to mature and fill out until 5 but it also depends on the feed program from weanling to about 2. If they have been fed up like sale horses, they will be done faster. They only have their genetic height potential and you can't go over that. Juno was out of a Master Hand mare if I am remembering without looking him up, Lady Juno I believe so you have some height by chance from the TB. I love the Master Hands I have seen, but I can't recall if they were taller horses. I know one was.
I am short so I never cared much unless they appeared to be under 15 hands. I sure hope you get what you want. I am in the same boat with my tall guy. that extra 2-3 inches can make a difference in his price by $5k in the hunter/jumper world. Crazy

Location: Oklahoma | Thanks everyone! He will be 4 this year and I really doubt nutrition was ever an issue. IMO he is well built for a three year old. If the height wasn't an issue for me I'd be over the top in love already. |

| Two times I've dropped off 3ish year olds to the trainer only to meet them again at 4ish and not recognize them. One was a real shorty at just over 14 hands and was 15.2 by the next time I saw him! Some lines mature younger or older. This fella was all very old cow lines on his bottom side and Special Leader on the top. |

I hope it was by AI or that poor fella would have to use a ladder lol. They really can change a lot, it is just a guessing game. I know some will breed their 14.2 hand mare to a tall stallion in hopes of getting taller and end up with a 14.3 hand baby. My first colt born was by a 16 hand stallion and 15.3 hand mare and he is 15 hands. I was disappointed but he is what he is. |

Nope - live pasture cover. Maybe my mare was standing in a hole somewhere. Hehe! I was hoping for something right around 15, maybe 15.1. Mine is an ox and he is the horse in my avatar. |

| My orphaned colt will be 3 in a couple of weeks. His mom was about 15h until her 7-8 year old year when she grew a couple of inches taller and much stouter. His sister has always been stout but she also put on a couple of inches in her 8-9 year old year. His daddy was maybe 14 -14.2 as a 3 year old.
This boy is about 16h at the butt and has some catching up to do in the front end. If he grows until he is 5 and then puts on another 2 inches at 8, he is going to be hugh!! |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | I have a gelding that was 14.2 as a late 3 year old when my husband claimed him at the track. By the summer of his 5 year old year he stood 15.3. I think it is hard to tell as every horse may have a different growth program. |

Location: Oklahoma | Bully wasn't "short" by any means ... 15 hands.
My 2011s are both right around 15.1 -- one is a daughter of Bully Bullion and the other is by Perks Firewater Flit. I suspect them both to grow another inch or so and then keep filling out.

| The old school dudes that hang out at my barn and have been breeding horses for 40 years or so go by this theory of prediction .... So far, it is spot on with every horse we've tried it on, regaurdless of breed.

Location: Alberta | I've always been taught to do the string test for height estimate... Hold a string from their elbow down to the fetlock, then pivot the string at the elbow up to the withers then that tells you height potential.
My 4 year old grew like a weed and I can't figure where it came from, so I always go based on the string test over estimating from their sire/dam heights.

Location: Montana | I don't know, but my 2 year old gelding (will be 3 in 2015) I swear grew 3 inches in the last two weeks. I was out there last night, and he seemed so tall compared to before. I haven't measured him because I know he isn't done growing and because of the flippin' mud (is winter over yet???). Height isn't an issue for me though...my mare is 14.2, maybe 14.3 hands with shoes, and she can really turn a barrel. So this guy's supposed to mature around 15 hands or so, but I think he may be a little taller, we'll see. I'm hoping that what ever height he has a little more run than my mare. :) |

Agreed! My gelding grew a whole hand his 4th year. Now his muscles are getting wider his 5th year and I'm hoping he will be good looking and done with his growth spurts by next year. |

Sorry to go off topic, but is this your Scrutinizer? I was wondering because my Scruti took FOREVER to grow. He got stuck around 14.0h, then overnight it seems, he shot up. He's coming 5 and is finally over 15 hands. |

Yes, she is. She is 1 inch taller than her mom. She grew like a weed until she turned 2 and then just stopped. She is a powerhouse in build and is starting to get longer in her body. She looks good but I just have been praying and praying she hits 15 hh or 15.1. I think 15.1 is the sweet spot for barrel horses. My gelding I was running before he mega injured himself is a good 15.3. I actually like one a bit shorter but not quite as short as she is. I've had to adjust majorly to her stride and all. I just bought a bareback pad for her (a really nice one) so I can get in tune with her better. Bareback riding I've found to be the best way to do that though it makes my thighs and abs hurt like the dickens.
