Some of you may remember my terrible videos from last year. Not riding, snatching on the horse's mouth, flopping around in general, etc.
Well this run is from Sunday. Our first after the Josey Clinic. Which helped me to visualize my first barrel position better. Ty did complement my hands and overall position, asking me why I wasn't pushing my horse faster yet. LOL
Anyways, here's my run from Sunday. I had brought my good camera, but forgot the card! So yes, it's a crappy cell phone video. I'm pretty sure I lost my timing on the 3rd and pulled him into it early. He's not one to knock barrels, although I have managed to knock a few with him through no fault of his. He's been VERY honest with me during the learning process.
I think it's a bit better than last year. We've only been doing this together since August of last year, and we took off December - February. This is one of our first runs of this year.
I had to edit the end. I may have uttered some not so nice words.....LOL And that's my 5 year old cheering me on in the background. Hubby couldn't be there, so he took his place. Haha
Constructive criticism welcome, along with some positive encouragement. LOL

Nice and smooth!
Thank you!
I tried a magic seat last fall. I really didn't like it. I couldn't get my feet forward and just felt like I was worse off. So I used it twice and ditched it. LOL I think I'm doing alright without it. I went up a full seat size in saddles and I feel much more comfortable in this one. I'm IN the saddle instead of being ON it. It helps a lot. |

Your tenseness flows right to your horse's feet and I think it makes his stride look a little tense. And yes your pulling him into the turn way to soon on the third. Just ride him a little further up into that turn and you'll be fine.

And yes, I am still pretty tense and nervous. This is the "fastest" we've gone headed to the first. I know it's still not FAST, but it's faster than a really slow lope. LOL So I was a little nervous, to say the least.
But I'm learning to trust him more and more. Just riding in general has helped me in that aspect.
And yes, I've really been trying to be quieter and just guide him through the pattern. He's finished. He knows his job. And I'm learning to trust him to do that job. Slowly but surely. LOL |

That's exactly how I feel!!! LOL
So glad I'm not the only one. I swear I'm going in there fast as crap, turning and burning. LOL
I know I'll get there. I keep forgetting that these awesome people I see running against me have at least 10 years of riding over me. I measure my experience in MONTHS. LOL It's easy to get discouraged, seeing everyone being awesome. But slowly and surely, I will make it. :) |

Location: 31 lengths farms | My fiancé gets kind of frustrated with me over it, I seem to be okay once I get around the first but man oh man, running to the first is like running off a bridge to me apparently. Last race I went to the whole goal was "just run to the first, just run to the first. Give up the turns, give up the clean pattern, heck give up the pretty pattern, RUN to the first." I think I chanted it the whole way there. I ran to the first and then immediately forgot how to ride the rest of the pattern, LOL!! But I reminded myself, the goal was to RUN to the first, maybe next time I can make that RUN to the first and ride the remainder of the pattern.... |

You sound just like me!! Haha
I try to make goals for myself every time. Like for that show, I kept telling myself to send him to the first and KICK the rest of the way. I did kick, but we knocked, so I guess it's one of those win/lose things. LOL
So does being able to relax and "melt" come with time? I think my nerves have gotten better, but I know I'm still nervous. I try to breathe, visualize the run, and relax the best I can. But I still get nervous as crap! LOL |

Yes, the more you haul the better your nerves become, but only if you make an effort to improve them. I used to be so bad I thought I was going to pass out and fall off my horse. My legs and hands would literally go numb. I was so freakin nervous I would screw up!LOL Then I realized what does it matter if I screw up? I'm human and I'm riding an 1100# animal..there are bound to be screw ups. Once I realized that it was OK for ME and MY horse to make mistakes I didn't get nervous anymore. I still get butterflies because I'm excited, but I don't get that "nervous" feeling. It comes with time and confidence. Confidence will come with doing and being successful at what you sought out to do. IMHO anyway.
I know how you feel about the feeling fast. Two weeks ago I exhibitioned my horse and I've never "run" him yet. He's been on the pattern a short time, but he has a smokin first barrel and blew my hair back. I thought for certain he was running all out. My friends assured me he had a nice barrel, but he was in no way RUNNING!LOL It always feels fast when you first start out. Pretty soon they won't be fast enough! I cant wait for that day!! |

I know the nervous thing...I'm terrible, last year I quit for a while because I would nearly make myself sick with nerves. So, I know what boat you are in there! Location: NC | Thanks everyone for the kind words. Lord knows I have been trying as much as I can, being as I can't ride 6 days a week or haul like I would like to. Kiddos and school kind of get in the way. LOL
Being told I'm a quiet rider is a very big complement to me, so thank you.
Ok. For those that missed the craziness last year. LOL. I posted a different video last year asking for help. It was a train wreck and I know that now for sure.
Here's a good one to judge just where I've came from. This was in April last year. After this, I didn't ride or run him until August.
http://youtu.be/vtnQUGn-4Lg
Yes. This horse is a SAINT when he wants to be. He gave me three "freebies" as I called them before he started MAKING me work.
It was the bad run in August that made me really start learning to RIDE him. After that, I learned all his buttons and stuck with him. No, I didn't have any business "running" a horse at this point in time. But I learned a LOT from those "runs" than I did from any of the exhibitions I did.
It's been a long and bumpy road in just a few months. My goal is to clock in the 3D (now 4D since we run a 5D setup), by State Finals in June. Whether that is winning the 3D or being dead last in it, it doesn't matter. LOL.
This is my husband's gelding. He broke, trained, patterned, seasoned everything with this horse. I want to run him and BEAT the times he's had on him. I am the only other person to ride Playboy and STAY riding Playboy. LOL He likes to test people. And he's tested me, but I haven't gave up yet. I've stuck with it. I've laughed, cried, thrown things, yelled a lot, and said things no sailor should even say. LOL But it's going to be worth it when I clock a GOOD solid time.

Location: USA | You did not great...but AMAZING. Things take time and barrel racing takes a lot of practice and patience. You just can't go out to a competition and run the pattern full out for the first time if you and your horse aren't ready. Everything takes time and if you take your time and build your and your horse's confidence up you'll soon be real barrel racer competitors :D. And like everyone has said, loosen up a bit if you do that it'll make your run more flowing. I know sometimes I to, feel like I'm flying to first and through the whole pattern but in the video it's like, I know I was wayyy faster than that, LOL It looks similar to a WP class, lol |

Location: NC | Ya'll are too sweet! Thanks for all the encouragement. It really helps.
Hubby is great at telling me exactly what I did wrong and what I need to fix. (Which usually I can see when I watch my videos). But he forgets that I'm a girl and have feelings too and it doesn't hurt to say "Good job here , but fix this" instead of "Hey, you did this this and this wrong. Fix it." LOL. He's been a great teacher though. Surprisingly patient too.
And I have been trying really hard to relax before a run. I've been trying to talk to someone and try to laugh a bit, which usually helps. Visualizing has helped a bit. And remembering to breathe! LOL |

| Good job.
There are a few things I see. Your feet are behind you during the run. You are still able to sit the turns, but as the speed increases you may find yourself tipping forward over the horse. You may need to go up another full seat size, or look at the Martha Josey saddles. Or you may just need to make a mental note of sitting down and pushing your feet forward.
Nice first and second, third you didn't have enough shape and rate going into the barrel causing the horse to drop his shoulder and blow off. |

Aww thanks riden. I managed to be a full second "faster" tonight than I was in September at the same arena. So I guess I will chalk it up for progress! LOL I'm having a lot of fun. I have my moments, but it's still fun. |
