Location: Oklahoma | I have been quiet on this board about these two . . .
Meet Moc and Dissy, twin APHA foals born at 4 a.m. March 15. Moc is a soreel colt and Dissy id the smaller of the two, a tobiano filly. The only medical intervention these two needed in their first days was a liter of plasma/serum for Dissy, whose IgG was borderline at 400. The filly, born weighing just 13.5 kg, was fighting from the start. She did not have a sucking reflex, but it developed by 4 hours and she took to the bottle immediately. Luckily, I have the Udderly EZ mare milk pump! Funny thing is that Dissy, half the size of her brother, stodd up before him and pooped and peed before he did as well! At about 18 hours, Dissy decided she had enough of the rubber and plastic and wanted the real deal from the source :) She has been nursing on her own since two days old and Missy, the dam, has been amazing in producing for these two. One setback came yesterday when we brought the pair to Oklahoma State for their weekly weigh in (both have DOUBLED their birth weight in 20 days). Although Dissy's legs had strengthened immensely, she was beginning to deviate in her pasterns. She was x-rayed and found to have a 5-degree deviation in her right leg and a 3-degree in her left (ankles). The periosteal stripping surgery went very well. In fact, the surgeon called me and said that even though Dissy was still drunk from anasthesia, she walked over to her dam, pushed big brother Moc out of the way and nursed :)
An ultrasound was done on this mare at 16 days, and only one sac was visualized . . .

Nap time on Day 2 . . .
Keeping warm in their first day . . . my friend Mack was pretty proud of her Foal Burritos :)

Visiting OSU at 16 hours old . . . Moc had an 800+ IgG and decided to nap in front of Mom. Dissy needed just one liter, and it was back home for all!

Weigh in at OSU at 4 days old . . . both had gained about 2 lbs each day - 6 lbs total!

Location: Oklahoma | NOT a dumb question at all, Power! Folks at APHA stated both can be registered - the only difference is one can be done online and the other will ned to have it done through snail mail. She also mentioned their papers will be marked as twins. |

Location: Tennessee | Another question...is it like in cattle, if you have a male and female born together, is the filly what they'd call a freemartin and sterile? I know it can happen in cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. I wasn't sure if it happened in horses or not...? |

Don't think so. I've been wrong before but I think horses can have fraternal twins and both be "normal". Usually the problem horses have is one will be way smaller/malnourished.
BTW I'm in love with the little girly she's so adorable!! |
