Which do you all prefer or doe it not really matter? Have many/any nfr riders started with one of these associations? (Off hand I think Taylor Jacob did nbha and so did Mary Walker I believe...feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Depends where you are located?  Some states have great NBHA, some states IBRA are better, and some states have other organizations and not so much of either of those.

I agree it depends on your area..

in my area there are alot more ibra shows with cheeper entry fees but the ground is not always the best.

but the few nbha shows are higher entry fees but the grounds is always good

Oh hm I didn't think about location. Good input. It also doesn't seem like IBRA has a world show but NBHA does....am I missing something here? I do think NBHA is more expensive but still

We dont even have IBRA on long island anymore we only have NBHA. You have to travel to NJ for IBRA.

IBRA has nationals- It is at C Bar C in Cloverdale, IN this year

I run IBRA because the shows are close to me, where NBHA is far. The people are very nice and I have never had issues with an IBRA show. :) I am happy with the organization.

I have ran at NBHA's but not regularly and I am not a member, so I can't say how they are as an organization.

I'm in the Southeast so it's NBHA for me. We also have several other organizations that have their own shows and finals in the area too. Lots to choose from down here. Even rodeo.

There's IBRA, but you have to go out to the western part of the state, and it's just not as big as NBHA is.

I live in Ky & IBRA is the best around here as in other adjoining states. All of the people with IBRA our just the nicest around. Shane Cline is the President & you couldn't ask for better. He always goes above & beyond for his barrel racers. Another plus, IBRA does not have a non membership fee like NBHA. NBHA is very expensive as well. A lot will depend on where you live.

I am in Michigan and IBRA isn't as big as the NBHA here, however I prefer the IBRA over the NBHA.  As somone else said  "Shane Cline is the President & you couldn't ask for better. He always goes above & beyond for his barrel racers."  We have a pretty good ground of people here in the Michigan IBRA, a smaller group but a happy, friendly group. And the IBRA has a world show just as the NBHA does, the NBHA calls theirs IBRA Nationals instead of NBHA World Show.  This year it will be held in Cloverdale, Inidana fo the 2nd year and C Bar C.

For the longest time everyone around here swore by NBHA, but then they bit us in the butt and quick making shows for our district, so I quickly switched over to IBRA and love it even more, since now they get all those arenas that NBHA were using. IN04 is just infamous now for NBHA.

Where is the edit button?

I live in southern IN so it makes a lot of since for me to stay with IBRA since my horse is used to the C Bar C arena which is where nationals are held. A lot better than going to Georgia.

It's gone!!!!!

I'm in northwest IN- so yeah, I'm not near NBHA stuff either. Do you know when our state show is for IN? I've been trying to find the dates

Sorry for the hijack, OP

It really depends on where you are. If you're curious, you could go to IBRA and NBHA shows in your area and ask the contestants why they like it etc. That's what I'd do.

No, I don't. I thought the Edinburg show on July 12th was it, but now I'm not sure. I hope so because my horse loves Baker Arena for barrels. I know I'll be there even if it's just a super show. Haha

Sorry OP. Haha kinda relevant, not really.

If you can do either, start by checking fees, payback, how much of entry fees are actually put in the pot. NBHA, a little over 60% of your entry fee is actual JP payout $.

I don't understand the IBRA point system. NBHA is pretty clear cut on how you get points and the amount of people who will be chosen to compete in the world. But in the IBRA all it says is you need 100 points to be a qualifier. So even though it's the best of your 14 shows, all you need to do is place first in one (first awards 100 pts) and you're guaranteed a spot in the championship show? I feel like that would be a lot of people.

Anyone who earns 100 or more points during the year can run at Nationals.

The points that are the best of 14 shows are the points used for end of year awards. (saddles, etc for all the D's)

The Nationals show is pretty big. Maybe if it grows to an unmanagable point they will move to a different qualifying system, but for now I think they are doing ok with what they have in place.

I gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. And will the state finals give out points in addition to the 14 shows to go towards the year end then?

Bump So I have a question now, for someone who runs in the occasional 2D's but more of a consistent 3-D/4-D rider which would be better the NBHA or IBRA?

With NBHA you don't have to be a member to run. Some charge a non member fee. If your looking to qualify for the big prizes then being a member could be promising. Seems barrel racing is a big secret in Michigan. I would go with who ever is close

I don't think you need to be a member to run in any IBRA shows either. Nobody knows if finals points count towards year end or not? I'm assuming they do.

I also was thinking the way the divisions work depending on the day and competitors, even if you run exactly the same time....one show you may be in 1D but the next you could be in 2D...therefore getting points in two different divisions for year end. This seems frustrating to me.

One of my geldings was a consistent top 3d horse and we brought home more paychecks with the NBHA shows because most did 1 second division/time splits. The IBRA in our area only run 1/2 second time splits and we would get buried in the 5d! A friend also had a top 2d horse who was running 4d times with the IBRA. Needless to say we both felt like losers that day lol We did really enjoy the people and atmosphere though!

Yes, state show points count towards year end points

Also, I forgot to mention, the top (5 i think) in each division going in to nationals (at the end of the season) are the "Top Dogs" for those divisions, and they automatically will make the short go at nationals.

Our local shows run one second splits for payout (3D), but they follow a 4D format for IBRA points.

What would be wrong with getting points in 2 divisions? My daughter had points in the youth in 2 divisions and points in the open in 2 division at the end of the year she made out like a bandit. She brought all kinds of goodies, halters blankets, jackets splint boots and a bit of cash. Just be sure you make it to the top in those divisions. Join one and run at both.

Why would you indicate Michigan is secretive on barrel races? Ran and lived there for years, no mystery as long as you can read showbills and have friends to keep you informed.

I agree. Nothing is a secret in Michigan about shows......everything is on facebook too! LOL I just posted yesterday about trying to find a show on Sunday and had 5 plus shows shown to me! Lots to do!
