I can not seem to get my thoroughbred in really good shape. I ride him at least 5 days a week for around an hour. But he just doesn't look like he has any muscle on him. He is on 4 lbs of Total Advantage by Bluebonnet and 1 lb of oats with it, plus good quality grass hay and a flake of alfalfa a day. What am I doing wrong?

Can you post pictures? Are you looking for more weight or more muscle or both? If we can see him, you'll get a lot of good suggestions. Did he race? Ulcers?

He did race, but he's been off the track 3 years. Was treated with UlcerCure last September. and has been on Aloe Vera since then. I'll try to post some pictures.

He doesn't look bad. I'm guessing you want him to look a little more fit?

I'm sure everyone will have a different opinion, but my suggestion is try THE Equine Edge - you can add things you want to it. There's an ad above. Talk to Krystal about it. I'd probably want Muscle, Ulcer, hair and coat. I'm using some now and have noticed a difference. I would give a flake of alfalfa twice a day, instead of once. The other thing that I would try is long, slow galloping. I see you say that you ride for an hour at a time, but what are you doing? I watched a video where the lady (Marlene McRae ?sp) was galloping 4 miles before even starting their training each (I think day). I may be wrong on the frequency, but I think it was daily. Just suggestions on what I would try. I'm sure other's may have different or better ideas. Good luck.

just gaining weight and conditioning weight are two way different things......there are some good conditioning regimens out there that will build endurance and put on muscle....and by ' regimens', i don't mean supplements.....i mean actual excercise

Thank you for your opinion. And I do want to try The muscle mass and that but I just can't afford it right now. And as far as when I ride. I generally walk around the field for a little bit then trot about 15 -20 minutes. Then I lope him around and work on speed transitions. I will gallop him across our field, but it's only about 1/4 mile to safely go. That's what I do with my paint mare and she is always in really good shape, it's just not working for him I guess!

Hearing that makes me say he needs a harder work out. I'd increase the alfalfa a flake and find someplace to slow gallop him. If he looks to be dropping weight, then I'd adjust his feed accordingly. I think you just want better muscle definition and it's going to take more work. That's my opinion :)

I've got one, 22 yo now, we used to lope 5 miles and he wouldn't even break a sweat.  He never looked like he was in shape, always very thin.  But he was in better condition than any other horse around.  He can still out "do" most any horse I know of.  We use him to chase "feral" horses.  We figured if you can touch them you could have caught them.

I will try just riding him a lot harder then and see how that works!
