Okay, I have a horse that is tying up. I will work her out and then she won't be able to move, but then the next day she is running around and bucking. I had been feeding her a sweet feed that we had custom made at the coop, but now I am going to take her off the sweet feed, but I have been looking at these "low starch feeds" and some of them are pretty pricey and I cannot justify paying those prices.
I guess I am asking, what has been your experience with certain feeds? She is an easy keeper, but not really fat, but obviously with her tying up, something isn't right. I have looked into Purina's Wellsolve LS, but I cannot pay $26 a bag. I don't even like the idea of paying $17 a bag.
Another question I have is, would it be better to give her plenty of good day and put out a lick up with minerals and vitamins and not feed her grain at all? I am trying to figure out the best, economically, way to do this.
I have also read about those Equiwinner Patches that are supposed to help with horses that tie up as well as other issues, but not sure if it really help, I will probably have to purchase them and see for myself.
Anyways, sorry for this long post, I just have been looking at all kinds of feed and some feed that I think I might be interested in is no where close to me either. I am located in south east Kansas region. Thank you for looking and providing my your opinions.

I had excellent luck with Nutrena SafeChoice Sr. I'm feeding it to my 17 yr old gelding that has had severe tying up episodes in the past. Since I've switched he's been excellent. For me Nutrena is easy to get in my area. I have a locally owned feed store, a locally owned farm store and Tractor Supply that all carry it. Its regularly priced at about $19 a 50 pound bag but they put it on sale quite often for a little over $17 a bag and I also sign up for Nutrena coupons that they send out quite often for $2 off a bag. If possible I save my coupons for sale days and get my bags for $15. Renew Gold is another option but impossible to get in my area. I can also feed the Purina W/S but too expensive for my blood. The Nutrena Sr I believe is around 12 or 14% starch.

Have you tried giving more electrolytes? THElectrolyte syringes are great to have on hand, 82 minerals and trace minerals. Does she ty up at rest, at the beginning of work or after work?
