So my hubby de-winterized our lq trailer tonight and when he went to open the door it shocked him. It only does it when it's plugged in, but none the less needs to be fixed. Anyone have any experience with this? Any idea what might be causing it?

Thanks in advance!

Mine did this one weekend and it was my electrical cord.  Got a new one in short order because everyone within a 2 mile radius of the barrel race heard my dog squeel as he was the one that got shocked!

I have heard of horses killed when they contacted the skin of a trailer with this issue.  Don't remember what causes it but you are very lucky to have found it before some one got hurt.

Has the cord been altered, as in the ground part of the plug was taken off?  They are meant to be on there for a reason.

Most of the time this happens, it is the cord.

We had it happen with ours when we decided to plug it in the night before to get the fridge cold with a regular orange cord attached to the camper cord.    Plugged it in with the heavy duty camper cord and never had the problem again.  The regular orange cord just wasn't heavy duty enough.  So we went and spent $75 bucks on a heavy duty black camper extention cord to keep it from happening again if we needed a longer cord!

Sounds like a fulty cord or ground wire. None the less, get someone who is very familiar with electrial work to look at it. I too have a friend who lost a horse that was tied up to their trailer. They went to unlock the door to their LQ and felt a shock. Went back around to the other side where their horse was tied and it was dead that fast!

Thanks everyone! We're 100% aware that this is a serious issue and I promise it will be tested repeatedly before we take our horses anywhere near it. Hubby will work on it when he gets home, but I'm betting it is our power cord (that a few of you mentioned) because if I remember correctly I think it was a bit frayed right around the plug, and it was raining yesterday when it shocked my husband so that would make it worse for sure!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll update later with what we find!

This is why I call all LQ's unsafe ... they are not required to follow any RV or Travel Trailer rules and any yahoo can put one together. Very seldom will you find individual breakers for each piece of equipment in an LQ ... just one master breaker ... and the wire is usually simple house wiring with no double coating on the wire to protect against rubbing or vibration rubbing a hole in it ...

A house extension cord should never be able to plug into a LQ if they used proper 30 amp plugs which match your breaker boxes total power ... and should be on the land power you plug into and not a cheap house plug in ..

RULE #1 ... TURN YOUR MAIN BREAKER OFF IN YOUR LQ WHEN CONNECTING OR DISCONNECTING YOUR HEAVY DUTY 30 AMP RV EXTENSION CORD INTO THE ELECTRIC BOX PROVIDED FOR AC POWER ..

WHY?? ... The spark that is generated with equipment on in your LQ including ghost users such as anything that has a remote .... can melt and bend your plug to the point it will short the trailer out or kill you .... 110Volts is more dangerous than 220 volts ... 110v will not let you turn loose from it and is not strong enough to knock you away from it ... SO BE SAFE TURN OFF YOUR MAIN BREAKER BOX INSIDE YOUR LQ..

ANOTHER LQ PEEVE ... you ladies are always complaining about LQ's tying horses butt to butt with your horses and creating a safety or frustration problem .....

EVER WONDER WHY ... THEIR STUPID LQ DOOR IS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRAILER ... IT IS ON THE LEFT SIDE AND OPENS INTO TRAFFIC IF STOPPED ON A STREET OR HIWAY OR INTO YOUR FACE ... .. notice that trailers with tack/dressing rooms all have their doors on the right side of the trailer and look at travel trailers and RV's and you will only see right sided entry doors .... Where do LQ owners tie their horses .. on the left side .... where do tack room trailer owners tie their horses on the right side ... butt to butt... lol

Only solution for happy parkers at a barrel race .....>> is for the LQ's to park along side of each other and the poor people park on the back row together ... lol ...

My last 2 trailers had the door on the right and I'd rather it be on the left lol.  The one I have now I just don't like that the door is on the long wall.. I feel like I've have way more space to work with if it was on the short wall.  Every trailer I can think of that belongs to friends, bosses, etc, that I've used, the door was on the right lol.

My trailer shocked me the same way. I was going in and when I grabbed the handle it bit me. It had a short in the electrical wires. We had to completely have the wiring redone which in that trailer wasn't a huge deal because we hadn't had the inside done yet and it was only a 6ft short wall.

My Sundowner factory LQ had the RVIA certified or whatever those letters are on a plate beside the door.  My current trailer does as well (not sure who the conversion company was).  The other didn't have that.  Regardless, all the things you accused LQ trailers of doing with the wiring are not true in my experience.

Reading Comprehension there Senor. The highligted text says 'tagged' as in LABELED Vehicles. And there are RVIA LABELED Horse Trailers with Living Quarters on the market.

Here is part of an article from Western Shooting Horse Magazine- hope it answers some questions:

Electrical Safety
In the case of the horse that died by electrocution, an improperly wired trailer was the culprit. Without a proper grounding system, electricity was sent from the trailer skin through a wet lead line into a wet halter and through the horse to the wet ground, resulting in his death.

Industry experts call this “Hot-Skin.”

Hot-Skin issues with a trailer or RV are typically high resistance electrical shorts that do not usually trip breakers or blow fuses. They could be the result of bad campground power, incorrectly wired extension cords, poorly maintained RV electrical systems or simply wear and tear. Although most shocks produce only a tingling sensation, they can be serious, even deadly, especially when the ground around the vehicle is wet.

All trailers manufactured to use electricity for appliances and other electronic devices are wired with proper grounding breaker systems.

You can test to see if your trailer or RV has Hot-Skin by using a good quality voltmeter, poking the red tip of the probe into the earth and the black tip to your trailer or RV. Be sure to make connection to the metal skin of your trailer or RV by picking a spot like the trailer hitch or other metal fixture and carefully follow the instructions for use of the voltmeter.

While both probes are making contact, you should read very close to 0 (Zero) volts. The National Electrical Code allows up to 2 volts on the ground, so 1 to 2 volts is safe. If, however, you read 10 volts, 50 volts or 120 volts, that’s the time to back away from the RV, turn off the circuit breaker, pull the power plug and immediately get the campsite electrician to find out what’s wrong.

If you suspect your trailer’s electrical system may have been modified or tampered with, seek the help of a professional electrician or bring your trailer to an authorized trailer or RV repair facility.

Just to update- it ended up being an extension cord that the trailer cord was plugged into (it was just a little too far to our power shed).

With regards to any yahoo being able to wire them, my husband is fairly experienced with wiring issues, this was simply something we hadn't experienced before as this is our first LQ.

Oh, and our LQ door is on the right side (where we also tie our horses 90% of the time so we can peek out the door and check on them)... It's an older Sooner if that makes any difference. As for being butt to butt with other horses- a simple solution is to park far enough away that you're not at risk.

What is a "good quality voltmeter"?  They have them on Amazon from $8 to $580.  I thought it would be a good idea to get one but I know nothin' 'bout 'lectricity.

Do y'all have a crow-Burlingame or Napa parts store there? Go in and ask the folks at the parts counter.

On my old lq trailer, we had a screw into the frame that had a insulated wire. When camping we hooked the pigtail to a copper rod that we put in the ground. Extra security against shock.

But I'm an Amazon.com junkie, I don't want to actually see and talk to people.  That's why I asked about it here.

My dad has good ones that he uses a lot on the farm, but I have no idea what kind they are.  I'll sneak a peek in his tool box next chance I get.

My husband has a Fluke brand voltmeter, but his life depends on his. His was around $250. He said if you're just using one here and there on 12 volt stuff, any of them in the $50 range should be sufficient.
