I have a 7 year old mare whom ever time she is exercised she breaths hard and heavy and it takes her longer to catch her breath even after the littlest amount of exercise. Last year a trainer put 90 days on her and I asked him his opinion and he said she might have a small windpipe and he felt as though she recovered quickly enough that I should not be concerned. However, just lunging her takes her breath away. In the sport of Barrel racing a lot of respiratory strain is put on a horse during a run. After looking online I do not in anyway believe it is heaves because she only seems to have this problem during exercise. However I did find and article on "roaring" in horses and that seemed more appropriate but this condition can also really limit a horses career. I do plan on getting a vet out but I just wanted to get other opinions! Thanks!

Are you in east, central, or coastal Texas and is your horse on pasture?? If so it's possibly the evil 'equine cicatrix' !! If you're not here then that's not it!! You still might need to get your horse throat and airway scoped to see what's going on. Good luck!!

There are a lot of things that could cause hard breathing - definitly get her scoped. An upper respiratory scope is definitely necessary but they might need to go all the way into her lungs & do a lung flush as well.

My husbands gelding sounds similar. Anything above a walk seems to be more difficult. He makes a deep breathing, growly sound when pushed. It does get better when he's in super good shape. But is never absent. He takes a while to catch his breath after stretching out. But he is 13-15 years old. Has worked on ranches, gathering cattle. Has been in the roping pen successfully. And has (unsuccessfully) loped a few barrels patterns. I say unsuccessful just because he's a big goober, and I only put him thru the pattern because he feels left out tied to the trailer. There are different products out there that may help. We are looking in to trying some out this summer when we start really riding again.

I would get him scoped and maybe try some THE Pulmon-EZ? My horse has had some breathing issue in the past that was related to allergies. THE Pulmon-EZ really helped her. I know they have a deal going on this month of 25% off. Might be a good time to try it.
