My boyfriend and I got into a heated debate last night (LOL) about what type of cowbred mares would produce quality offspring that could be roped off or ran barrels on

I have my favorites when it comes to what is on the papers....and he has.....well....his favorites. What would be the typical names you would want to see on a mares papers when crossed on a running bred stallion?

We have a grandaughter of doc o Lena that consistently gives us size, great bone and outstanding temperments when crossed on SLim.  Also have KIng Fritz, Eddie and d?iftwood mares and any of them should make awesome rope horses..

Thank you! I'm a huge fan of driftwood, two eyed jack, jackie bee, blue valentine (definitely one of my favorites in a pedigree), along with high brow cat and peptoboonsmal.

He's more of a "no name" kinda guy LOL. He likes starbert bred horses?

Most go back to Guthrie Double Star, which is a double bred Oklahoma Star stud. I've only seen starbert horses mainly in the roping pen. Have a nice little Hancock/Starbert heel horse that I really like but could never make it in the barrel pen(not enough speed). My favorite cowbred horses are Harlan, Peppy San Badger, Matts King, Hollywood dun it, Zan Parr Bar.

I look for something with proven sires in the pedigree. I like Pepto and High Brow Cats - they have trainability, guts, brains, and athleticism. There are also LOTS of them doing good things in different show pens - including cutting, reining, some roping, mounted shooting, etc. I am partial to a smaller horse though so that is not always the "best" choice for the barrel pen in terms of length of stride - It doesn't mean they can't compete but in larger pens ... but, well you get it.

I think some of the "older" lines make nice horses too - I've seen some Jackie Bee's that would easily transition to the barrel pen and are super solid horses. I also like to see Two Eyed Jack, Watch Joe Jack, or Two Id Bartender, etc ... I like the brains and agility these horses seem to carry and pass on to their offspring. Depending on what else happens to be in the pedigree these horses can be a bit larger than I like, but that's just my preference :)

Zan parr bar I would have considered a show/halter horse not a cow horse
Hollywood Dun it, was known more for reining then cow

I've always considered zan parr bar as halter as well. I also like the hollywood dun its.

My boyfriend is big into roping, and he wants to breed for the rope horse that could be what takes him to the "top" as he says LOL. He wants something that will eventually take him to the USTRC finals, and not just one that is only a "draw pot" kinda horse. And I'm wanting breeding for the barrel pen

Love the HBC - super super athletic and good minded.

The mare I'm running now is Peppy San Badger on top and is very athletic as well but the PSB comes out sometimes......a little broncy. LOL

ZPB was an outstanding producer of rope horses and halter titles aside, I would say that's what he's mainly known for.  And I wouldn't call Starbert horses "no names", they are a regional bloodline that has turned out awesome horses in barrels and the roping pen.  A lot of them can run and they are tough.

Zan Par Bar has produced more Worl Champion rope horses then any other sire! Especially when crossed on Two Eyed Jack mares. There has also been alot of very successful 1D/rodeo barrel horses come from Zan Parr Bar.

I know he was a 3x halter champion but he was also the high point steer roping horse in 1979 and his offspring are some outstanding performance horses. For instance Zan Parr Jack - World Jr Working Cow Horse Champion,  High Point Heading Stallion, High Point Junior Heading Horse, High Point Heading Horse,  World Sr Heeling Horse Champion, High Point Calf Roping. Or there is Zan Parr Express who excelled in the riening world and Sparkles Suzana who was: the 1992 AQHA High Point All-Around Champion and High Point Senior All-Around Champion; High Point Calf Roping, Heading and Heeling Horse; 1992 World Champion Senior Calf Roping Horse; 1991 High Point Senior All-Around Champion, Reserve High Point All-Around Champion; High Point Heading Horse; High Point Calf Roping Mare; third, 1992 World Championship Senior Heading; third, 1991 World Championship Senior Calf Roping; sixth, 1991 World Championship Senior Working Cowhorse; fourth, 1990 World Championship Senior Working Cowhorse; fifth, 1989 World Championship Junior Reining; 1989 NRHA Open Derby Champion; 4th, 1988 NRHA Futurity; AQHA Champion, Performance Champion, Superior Reining, Calf Roping, Heading, Heeling.
I hate when people discount horses because they don't know anything about them.

His offspring had some success in the performance end but the stallion himself was known for halter and show, i do know about his performance record. He also has many more champions in the halter/show industry.

Each person to their own, I wouldn't call him a cow bloodline.

But then again I don't put rope horses in the same category as working cow/cutting horses.

I know we've talked about it before on here with a pretty good discussion too ... but I think what the OP is getting at is more of the lines that are known for being "all around" horses ...

There are MANY sires that are super specialized in certain show pens and ... to the OP ... you're looking for lines that may cross over well from the roping pen to the barrel pen - not necessarily a traditional "cow bred" horse, maybe?

I think Cheryl has a good point, that what a sire is known for and what his offspring do are two different things and can vary greatly dependent on the horse/line.

Thankfully, I think there are several different lines that can do what the OP is looking to do! Some good sires have been brought up, another that I was just thinking of over lunch is ASOF. He's a great lil calf horse and DANG can that stud run ( I think anyway). He certainly has offspring doing all sorts of things in different show pens too.

Oh Aush I wish I was a fly on the wall when you guys were having this discussion!  Since I know you know what I ride:  my little brown mare that runs barrels & heels is a Doc O Lena, Peppy San Badger, Doc Bar.  The buckskin & grey that rope and run barrels are Peppy San, Wimpy, Two Eyed Jack and Three Bars.

teehaha - 2014-04-23 8:44 AM  We have a grandaughter of doc o Lena that consistently gives us size, great bone and outstanding temperments when crossed on SLim.

Zan parr bar I would have considered a show/halter horse not a cow horse Hollywood Dun it, was known more for reining then cow

AQHA begs to differ with you and I know Carol Rose would to.

jlrace - 2014-04-23 2:10 PM Oh Aush I wish I was a fly on the wall when you guys were having this discussion!  Since I know you know what I ride:  my little brown mare that runs barrels & heels is a Doc O Lena, Peppy San Badger, Doc Bar.  The buckskin & grey that rope and run barrels are Peppy San, Wimpy, Two Eyed Jack and Three Bars.

LMAO it was pretty hilarious.....even had anna giggling during the converstation!

Never had bad luck with Coronal Freckles breed horses. Ive always found them to be a bit bigger and streachier than the average areana breed cow horse. I love all the top cow lines though for the areana. I want to breed my cutting breed mare to a streakin six breed stud one day. (Shes by a pepto son out of a coronal freckles daughter)

I also really like Driftwood, and am searching high and low for a high precentage daughter.

The two eyed jack that was here was a jam up rope horse, he was my FILs when he was younger. He was also poco cowman. I also have had great luck with heavily breed poco beauno breed horses and would like another.

Oddly enfough though the best heel horse we ever had had Impressive on his papers ... twice lol. That horse was a extremely large bucket of cool, we have yet to min anything that holds a candle to Rusty.

I personally prefer running bred mares crossed on a cowbred stallion, as it's said the run comes from the bottom side. Also, the large heart gene comes from the maternal side, so I won't buy cow/run crosses out of cow mares crossed on a running stud. I look for the opposite cross....I think you have a better chance of getting a good barrel/rope horse when they're crossed that way. JMO

I have had good luck with my Doc O Lena mare and really love her filly by my son of Special Leader. I also have a colt now by the Special Leader stud and out of a Grandaughter of Reminic. He already has some moves. I owned the Reminic stud and he crossed really well on race bred mares. The Reminics are super snappy and quick and not slow, or at least mine weren't.

However, if the stud is running bred and has a large heart isn't it always passed on to his daughters? Also, I think the large heart gene is only carried on one of the X's, there's what a 50% chance that it will be passed on if the mare has it?

To the OP, I love my Smart Little Lena mare. I also have a Mr. San Peppy mare who was crossed on a running bred stud that has had a couple really nice babies. I rode a Doc O'lena mare that was athletic as all get out, too. Love cowbreds!

I agree with wanting the run on the maternal side. Now heres the kicker for me. Our friends who rope will ride running breds but they say they are too hot (almost always have to Ace them). Same horses also are hard to brand calves on. They are wanting all cow now? Im a big fan of two eyed jack grandget, Zan Parr bar, hancock on the maternal side, id like to try a jackie bee, and all oklahoma star bred horses. Oh driftwood goes without saying.
Chic Please has some nice looking horses on the ground and one for sure doing really well in roping. I think we will see a bit more paddys irish whiskey bred horses soon since there are so many geared toward ranch events.
We are doing about the same thing breeding wise. Im picking up a linebred two eyed jack colt this fall. Im going to maybe sell another horse and pick up a two eyed redbuck filly or two eyed jack crossed on a zan parr bar colt as well.

http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/reds+nevada+felicia my new four year old who i would never of bought if id have looked at her papers lol!
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/ffq+pocos+foxy+flash this is my broodmare. shes about to drop a foal by a running stud. I hope its a filly because she is a chronic founder case and I dont want to put her through carrying another. Only thing im not a fan of is the skippers they are frowned upon around here... LUcky blanton was a good rope horse, poco has given her some serious cow, and those fritzs are know for good attitudes ad big stops.
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/hfr+rosie we have this mare and although long in the back I almost like everything else about her... She is just sort of edgy and sulls up not the sort of mind we want so she is up for sale. Her daughter is also for sale out of a nice cutting stud... Super athletic though its that edge that bothers me its great for cutting I think but isnt really user friendly.
I think it be easier to sell both ways if sired by a barrel stud and out of your roping mares too.

I have a mare with Poco Tivio, Poco Bueno, and Doc Bar on her papers. She's very athletic, smart, and has a lot of substance. For sure can say I'd buy another horse bred similar!

I don't agree with this.  I always look for a mix of run/cow in my horses and more of them have been out of cowbred mares/running studs.  There are a lot of good horses out there running and in the roping pen that are bred this way.  It may be your personal preference, but there are too many good horses performing at levels that would prove this theory wrong.

For the OP, I like Driftwood, Doc O Lena, Peppy San Badger and more Driftwood

This mare is run on top, cow on bottom. Wouldn't trade her for the world. She is my sister's horse. 19 years old this year and running the best she has ever run for my sister.

http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/doc+o+flits+honor

For the horses we are breeding to, all our mares are running bred. I like to breed to get either 100% run, or 3/4 run and 1/4 cow.

I have seen good results with shining spark grandget in the barrel pen.. I love genuine doc.

I'm big on cowbred cross on a running stallion....but I'm cross my blue roan mare to a peptoboonsmal/shining spark stallion this year, and an own red roan son of peptoboonsmal next year.......we would rotate mares crossed on running bred stallions each year.
