I have had to resort to full tubes of UlcerGard on two horses...screaming ulcers. This is what I had done, still got ulcers:

1. Free choice coastal.
2. Minimized grain.
3. Alfalfa making up a good part of the daily hay requirement.
4. Turned out.
5. These horses actually were living a much less classically stressful life than usual (no hauling, not much riding, etc.)
However, they were moved to different homes and different herd structures in less than 2 months. (long story..rentals...sigh!!)

I don't like using UlcerGard, since nevertoold and a couple others on the board have taught me about the compensatory effect you get when they come off of it. But, I'm there now. I need a really great supplement (I guess?) to help keep their guts from doing this again. I like the look of the smartpak ultra digest or whatever its called...any ideas? Something that you scoop and go would be lovely...it would also be neat to keep the cost under $100 dollars a horse a month. Suggestions?

The only thing I would do different with your feeding program is I would feed Equine Renew Gold.  1 pound a day.  Then add a good supplement .  My preference is Platinum CJ.  For the ulcers, Aloevera Juice from Walmart.  Or Draw which you can get at Bristol Vet.  I feed Timothy and Alfalfa.  This has worked on my Chronic ulcer horse.

I reduce the noncomplex carbohydrates as much as possible, so no oats, I use a complete pelleted feed with low sugar content, I will add flax and I give papaya puréed as there has been scholarly research publications that prove papaya will heal ulcers.

Papaya is cheap and my horses love the taste. I have seen the symptoms of ulcers disappear on a horse I gave papaya after a month.

I know many will not agree, but I will tell you what worked with my mare. She had to be stalled for 8 weeks for an injury. Came  out with ulcers. I tried a few things, not much improvement. A vet recommended Draw from Bristow Vet. I tried it and noticed an improvement within a couple of days. Within two weeks, she was back to her normal self.  I kept her on it for maintenance and have added aloe vera juice daily.

She is a joy to ride again.

Now my disclaimer for those ready to react negatively to this post.
Just my experience. You can agree to disagree, but that is my opinion and I am sticking to it.

THE GastroPLUS. Works differently than other ulcer treatments. This product increases mucus in the mucus membrane lining of the stomach so it is thick enough to contain and control the acid. This enables it to get hind gut ulcers as well. Products that reduce the acid(most every one) can cause the horse to get protein entropy as well as the horse will over produce acid to compensate for the lack of acid produced therefore turning into a vicious cycle and a never ending unhappy horse. It sounds like your horse will need atleast 2 bags of THE GastroPLUS.

Do your horses readily eat the papaya?  Did they have to get used to it?
How much do you give each day?

I have read about the benefits of papaya but never knew anyone who actually used it. Is it easy to find and how much of the puree do you feed daily?

2 of my horses had bad ulcers also. I switched to Renew Gold and give them Oxy-Max supplement. It prevents ulcers in the fore gut and hind gut, which most other supplements do not. I also use the Oxy-Ulcer paste for hauling/stressful times. They are 100% better now.

Liana DeWeese recommended Forco to me for my mare. She said she had seen it do wonders for ulcer horses.  I didn't have my mare scoped. She had been at a trainer and flipped out one day. She says this is good for hind gut ulcers too. And do the double dose for a week then the regular dose.

Ulcers before and after can make a horse tie up. I would watch the protien levels on your feed especially if you are feeding alfalfa.

I believe it was 60 cc's 2x a day? I was able to mix it in feed. Elimate the coastal. What kind of grain are you feeding?

Thanks everyone!!! I appreciate everyone that took the trouble to post. Cheryl's out of my league, pretty sure, with the papaya deal though. :)

I'll be researching some options and get going with something soon. Thanks!!

research lecithin, there are some articles.  I just got started this winter after treating a gelding for ulcers with ulcercure OTC.  Ladyjockey is who told me about it.  It's very cheap (I buy from bulkfoods)  I'm still waiting for full fledged riding to get a good idea how it works. But, I like the science behind it.
