what do you do when/ if you get a horse in that's healthy, in good weight, good teeth, good feed, not wormy, that has little back/ shoulder muscle that is "young" (under 8)

I've heard of a supplement that is specifically for topline that is kind of pricey but I cant remember what it is...

I know there is certain things you can do riding to help but I haven't had to mess with it before- do you know of any exercises?

thanks!

Someone just posted on this a few days ago....

Calcium to phosphorous ratios being in balance play a big part in building a good topline according to TLC Animal Nutrition. I've found that to be true.

I do a lot lungeing where I encourage them to stretch to the point that their nose is practically on the ground. I ride the same way too -- working them while they're stretched out helps a lot.

Calvaletti is good for building top lines too.

How do you encourage that stretch? Do you use a surcingle at all? I have one mare that puts her nose down and really stretches on her own when lounging and long trotting and I would love to get my others to do that as well.

I'll jiggle the lunge a little -- kind of like playing with the reins in english & encouraging them to get on the bit. That helps with some. But the biggest thing that seems to make a difference is relaxing and just being quiet and easy with them and not pushing so much. Be real easy in asking them to step up if they break back down to walk, but just kind of step back and let them relax and pick the tempo. If they can relax, they'll usually start to stretch.

Beet pulp is awesome and add in some Animal Element. I was seriously impressed how that combination added a top line to my horse a few years back.

I'll try to remember everything. Not EPM, she's built like this unfortunately. She's on Renew Gold, THE muscle mass Special Blend (rest of her body looks great LOL), alfalfa, hay, grass. I have a big bag of AE but she's on THE so I don't want to over do it.

She rides with her head real low, lunges like a dream. I actually lunged her last night and she did good about stretching out.

Did you test for EPM?  My mare showed no neurological signs. A postive test was a shock.  This was the new test, so not a false postive.
Just throwing it out there.

can you pretty please explain to me in dumb term, message if you want, how to teach her to drive with her hind end, round.... I looked up a few videos yesterday trying to see what it looks like when done properly and I saw a few English videos where the horses poll is lever with top line and head perpendicular to that line while push forward. Is this what you are referring to?

I'm broken right now so I can't ride for a little while but I really need to learn this the right way.

My mare had a poor top line for a couple of years now.  MM helped only for a while.  She ran very well and nothing seemed wrong other than the topline...

So they say... "Not all researchers agree on the incubation period; however, clinical trials and horse shipments to continents without EPM, have suggested it takes from weeks to two years for symptoms to appear after infection by S. neurona."

I recommend FORCO.

We prefer in warmup to allow a little deeper lower and lighter . we supple them lightly down and horse will  maintain contact and roundness and working from his hind using his back and stomach muscles to achieve balance and lightness. no this isnt rolkur.
for short durations we do this to help build muscle. we do this at a trot and canter .. standing up and doing transitions .. half halts as well to work differant muscles.
this will help stretch topline and achieve relaxation.this video is about a good one to see from 115  minute to 2:30 I believe.. also these photos might help as well and are FEI approved for warmups.. your horse has to build up for this and maybe not as correct but i think you can understand what I  mean.. always use a snaffle as well and 2 handed like we do.

what is MM? It doesn't seem to bother her at all. She's 5. I'll have her for life. I just don't want old age to be harder on her than it has to be.

sometimes if horse isnt using proper muscles in exercise they dont build a topline.. doesnt mean epm ...if thats the only symptom  most of the time its lack of muscles from not using those muscles correctly.
