Location: Southeast, Texas | Anyone else have a 2010 baby gearing up to haul? Videos to share? For those who aren't planning to Futurity, are you seasoning this year or still exhibitioning?
My filly is four this year, she isn't going to Futurity, we've taken things very slow. She has a solid pattern in slow work but has never been asked to run. I was hoping she would fill out more.. She is all leg and lankiness!!! We will be starting to exhibition soon since I can't seem to keep my two seasoned horses running!
I would love to see videos or hear the stories on your four year olds! |

Location: NE Texas | My 4 YO is cruising through pretty nice at home. He wasn't broke until spring of his 3 YO year and then we sent him to the track through the summer/fall. I took him to his first exhibitions this past Tuesday and did more riding around and sitting that exhibtioning, but he's at the point where it's time to start going and seeing the sights. He's not spooky at all, but just not focused, so we've got a little work to do there. I think I could easily have him ready for the 5 YO futurities, and I would LOVE to do that, but with my job it makes it hard to get away like i'd need. to. |

Location: Missouri | Mine is way behind. He isn't even patterned. I only get to ride him three times a week, tops. Some weeks I can't ride at all. He's tough anyway, so each ride is mostly trying to keep him from being too fresh, then maybe trying to learn a little. I feel like I start over every time. Really discouraging when I read that others are ready to haul But, when I don't compare, I try to celebrate the small accomplishments (like, he didn't try to kill me today! yes!) Some day he'll either turn a corner, or I'll give up...not sure which will happen first... Here's a pic from last fall.

Location: So. Cali. | I picked my 4yr old up mid March after getting a 30 day tune up from having the winter off. He has a very short attention span which is holding him back from progressing quicker. Lol. He's actually very 'natural' at turning a barrel which makes me a bit nervous to over do his work, but right now my goal this season is to just haul him out to every jackpot I go to get him use to everything. Will haul this summer alone to jackpots to hopefully do some time onlys. Then aim to enter in the winter. He's loping big circles decent, picking up correct leads, etc. Just needs the consistency now.

Location: Southeast, Texas | Don't be discouraged, and don't give up!! [= My biggest frustration with my girl is that I've slow worked, slow worked, slow worked to the point that I could probably turn her loose in the arena with a slap on the rump and she would trot a perfect pattern. But, now she thinks THAT is the goal. A lope requires tons of encouragement and like I said... She has never been asked to RUN it! Lord help my legs on that day! Now for a bucket of feed she can flat out fly, with her belly almost on the ground. Maybe I need a volunteer to shake a bucket in the alley after I turn third. Is that allowed? [=
I purchased my filly in hopes of having her Futurity ready, but like Herbie said, it just isn't a feasible option right now.. I can't afford to travel and enter her in the futurities. Especially since we are going to be paying someone to train and futurity our colt starting next year! One futurity horse at a time for this household! [= So, a jackpot/rodeo horse she will be! |

I made that mistake with my first futurity horse years ago. He worked so beautifully, but his mentality was "If it's ok with you I don't want to go tooooo fast because i'm just going to have to turn up here!". LOL He did end up making a really nice horse, but I tried everything I could to get him to run off at Ft. Smith and he went in and cruised a gorgeous pattern, but just wasn't fast enough. Training these things is hard because we want so badly for them to work perfect, we have alot of pride because we trained them, and we don't want anyone seeing them not work. I learned from the colt I mentioned before that sometimes we have to challenge them a little bit in order for them to step up in their training. You can always back them down a step, but i'm a firm believe in asking them for a little too much every once in a while just to see where my training is at. Does that even make sense? We have to trust our training and at some point put these colts on their honor......otherwise you'll end up with a horse who works perfectly at half speed but you can't make him put his heart on the line and try to win something. |

I'm hoping I haven't ruined her "run!" I know she has it, but it takes all the push I care to give just to high lope through the pattern! Worst case scenario, a beginner will LOVE her! Lol! |

I'm sorry, ABroussard, I didn't mean to insinuate that at all. I bet she comes on just fine when you, and she, are ready to speed up. Just throwing some of the things out there that i've learned along the way. Good luck to all with their youngsters and I look forward to seeing more pics and videos!!! My colt used to do that too.....in fact when I had him broke I went and watched him at about day 20 and he was still bogging his head, bellering and bucking in the roundpen. One day at the track and one good butt whipping there and he didn't hump up anymore. Now I did have to have one good come to Jesus meeting with him when I first got him home because he wanted to be crabby about me asking him to move out and go forward but again, I had to make a believer out of him and then it was over. Sometimes we get one that has to try our patience occasionally. I was fully prepared to potentially hit the ground, but I knew it was a battle and I was going to win it one way or the other. I personally like the ones that can be a little trying sometimes. Good luck and keep us posted! He's gonna be just fine! |

Me too!
My 4yo is cruising through, we're working out a couple kinks, but he's progressing. He's been hauled a good bit and entered once so far. I feel like if I could haul him consistently he would be much farther along, but that's life and I've only been able to take him about once every couple months. I just take him when I can though and we'll get there. |

Your colt is a cutie! And I like your helmet.....i'm swallowing my pride and have made a commitment to wear mine in public this year. I've already had one guy ask my husband why I was wearing a helmet. My husband told him...."Cause you never know what that crazy little SOB will do!". LOLOL I love that man! |

| This is my daughters filly I have been riding her this winter but she did most of the work on her since she was 2. She has been hauled around since she was 2, I did some time onlys on her last summer just trotting and slow lope through to get use to new arenas . We started hauling her some this winter and she has been entered 4 times think. She has been really good but our last race she decided she couldn't be left alone and threw a fit so our run was pretty bad but that is babies I guess. I am not asking her to run all out she has been running just under 2 seconds off the winner. We won't go real hard this year might shoot for a fall futurity if all is going well. I will try to put a pic of her but I don't usually have much luck with my pictures. My second picture I almost took a detour off my horse, lots of air under me !! She is the first foal by our stud to start running and I am so excited to see what we can do .

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | Mine has been home from her 60 days getting broke for a year. I rode her 6 months, just piddling, not doing anything serious, then she ended up getting 6 months off between winter, an abscess and getting sick. So I just got back on her. She hasn't seen a barrel pattern yet, but we have turned lots of things. She came back awesome and feels like she's ready to put the hammer down, so hopefully she will be cruising a good pattern by fall. I don't ever start my colts until 4 or enter before they're 5, although I would make an exception if I thought one was ready. |

Then one of them got an infected tooth and the other one ended up with inflammatory airway disease.
The tooth one just had surgery last week, the one with the breathing problem was treated and is now out in the pasture healing up.
It will be later in the summer before I can start back on either of them. They are both entered at the BFA in December too. Ugh. They were both pretty smart so they should come back easy once I get them in shape again.

Thank you! I wish I could move south and do more futurities. Unfortunately our ranch keeps me busy. I only get to play a few months out of the year, in the fall. |

Thanks. I've got a good colt starter so that helps what I can get done here in a month time. I wish I could go more. The BFA in December will be the first futurity for these 2 mares. I will run them next year up north at the fall ones. I just can't get away with calving-foaling-breeding-haying to any of the earlier ones. I'd love to go to the AZ futurities, DDBHC, BBR Futurity, Ft Smith----They're all on my bucket list but probably won't happen anytime soon. |

Location: Glendive Mt. | Well I am glad I am not the only one that doesn't have hers ready to go. Mine is just ready to start loping. I Like mine very broke before starting and this super cold winter put a damper on that. Hope to have her loping them real soon. I was thinking about the 5 year old futurities but if she doesn't get moving soon that will just be a thought. A girl can dream right. She is out of Famous Jr and his Colts have been doing pretty good at the futurity. |

| Thought I would share a video of mine, mind you, this is the first time I had an opportunity to really ask her for speed (we're at a clinic in this video), since the winter was so cold and snowy and we didn't get to haul any, just ride in our small indoor. I hope to get to season her this summer, no plans for futurities or anything, and just get back at it! (I know my riding could use some improvement) Having to deal right now with a setback, but hoping to get it resopved so we can continue to improve...

Thanks! Some days I have a hard time picking a favorite myself. :) Now I just wish they'd both hurry up & get healthy so we can get back going again! They are both healing up a little more every day. |

| Good to know where everyone is at!
I just got a 2010 model about three weeks ago. He needs some TLC. I put about fifteen rides on him, he is green broke....
May be a while before he sees a pattern...he first needs to give me his face and his rib cage....he likes to swing his butt out and run through the bit...so we are doing nothing above a trot until I can get control of his body. He needs to build muscle and a better top line anyways.
In the meantime he is scheduled to get his teeth done and go to the chiropractor to make sure he is good to go. I will see what the next three months will bring!! |

| My 4 year old is slow working great.. adding a little more speed each time. I asked him more than I should have last week and he went in a cruised a pretty great pattern for never being called on. He is hunting the barrels and I think will be a push style horse. Of course after getting to run a little he thinks he is way more advanced that he should. He is so calm and cool though right now. I hope that doesnt change when we start exhibitioning. I plan on hauling him more this summer. He still has come maturity issues.... like not liking to be by himself at the trailer... but that will all come the more he is hauled I guess.
He is also tracking the heel-o-matic and has had worked cows and pastured roped calves some.

Please, please, please send me a link so I can see him go!!!!
This is the colt I mentioned in an earlier post. He's a 4 YO and we didn't break him until this time last year due to his knees still being wide open as a 2 and him being small. He had a couple outs on the race track last fall and then came home for the winter. He's had about 50 days of riding now off the track and he's sure trying to work. I'm really happy with where he's at right now.

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | Mine is quite a bit behind of where I'd like her to be..... Life got in the way and we didn't break her till last March. I started riding her in May, it's been pretty hit or miss. Traveled a lot for work so she might get worked 10 days, then a week off. Then riden 2-3 days and a week off. Started her on barrels in Oct, really slow. We're just kinda cruisin the pattern. She has a great big motor, so I want everything really correct before I ask for speed. Cruised thru the last big race at Stephenville, got a little 5D check in the day money with no exhibitions the first day. She was a bit less lost the 2nd day and sped up some. She's really been fun to ride, I swapped departments at work so NO more travel = I can get serious about trying to get her ready for this fall.
Very little bothers her, she's on the lazy side... I conned hubby to rope the track steer on her when I'm gone to help her learn to hurry up and get somewhere. He's heeled on her out of the box a couple of times and she can break and drag her butt effortlessly. Never seen a racebred baby slide like she can. |
