So I was bored one day and pulled up a list of all american futurity winners, saw the horse Savannah JR won the All American Futurity in 1965, was champion 2YO colt in 1965.

That's all good and fine until I look and his DOB is 1962… how is all this possible? His official AQHA record has him as a march 1962 baby, running in futurities in 1965 and derbies in 1966…

Anybody know how or why this happened?

YEP ... there were rule changes while the All American was being put together .... and you could run 2-3 year olds a couple of years..

From 1959 when it started until 1973 the All American was ran at 400 yards and changed to 440 yards in 1973.

These earlier races were also ran at La Mesa race track when Ruidoso was nothing but a training//match race track with a creek/river that runs thru it that flooded a lot or provided a good cold water soak for sore legs ... Ruidoso sits around 5300 feet above sea level ... so horses need to be hauled in months ahead of the race to get acclimated to the elevation ...

This link on page 3 to 5 will show you winning times in the 20 second range which is the 400 yd times then in 1973 on page 5 it jumps to 21 second times when they changed it to 440 yards ...

This is a good colorful short history on Ruidoso Downs and when R.D. Hubbard bought it and still owns it ... look at the left sidebar also ....

As with anything on a historical basis ... the older the book or magazine stories you find on the subject ... the more accurate and truthful the data will be. Each time a horse story, place or event is re-written by some idiot actual information is lost/changed to embellish the event etc etc .... especially with todays younger people knowing nothing about or ever competing in a horse event.

I stopped taking the QH Journal 30+ years ago when one of their rich kids wrote that ZIPPO PAT BARS was named after the throw away Zippo cigarette lighters ... in 1964 they had not been invented yet ... they also made the QH Journal nothing but a halter and western pleasure book at that time and still is today ...
(he was named after one of the Marx Brothers comedy team because he was such a clown and show off as he was growing up)

HAVE FUN ..
