Location: Kentucky | I ordered mine from Pittsburgh Foundry. They did a great job, I received it within a few days after ordering. You need to look up brand laws in your state. They should also have a brand catalog as well.

| You should check with your state to see what your branding laws are, as they vary with each state. In Missouri, you have to have it registered with the Dept of Ag. They have a log of what brands are registered, and what position on the body that brand is registered for.
I had my brand made through Pittsburgh Foundry and was very happy with the quality of the brand and their service. They were more affordable that L&H, which I know a lot of people use, but have just as good of quality and quickier turnaround time. (Or this was the case 5 years ago when I ordered mine) |

So in the state of MO, you say you HAVE to have your brand registered? What if all five of my horses were already branded with my brand when I moved here? Do I still have to register my brand? And if I do, where/how do I get it done? |

Get ahold of a brand company, one that makes the brands.....that's what we did. The guy actually designed it for us. We had an idea of what we wanted and he just ran with it. |

Beyond that, I don't know that it is required that you HAVE to have it or really know that answers to your other questions.

Most states want you to register your brand. I'm pretty sure it's not against the law to not register them but if someone where to steal your horse, put there registered brand on them and yours is not registered than in court it's going to be harder to prove that they are yours. In Oklahoma, registered brands are prima facie evidence in a court. (I had to look prima facie up the first time I read the rules so "sufficient to establish a fact or raise a presumption unless disproved") We didn't register ours when we moved to Oklahoma, I guess it's a chance we'll take. |

Location: Southeastern Idaho | Also register your brand with the state...I went ahead and found the link for North Carolina. This way you can see what has been taken and what hasn't either by the actual brand or location on the animal. I know our ranch's brand is on the right hip for horses and cattle but someone else in Idaho also has it on the left side. So we have to be sure we tell anyone helping us to PUT IT ON THE RIGHT SIDE! :) We had a mess once when a friend branded a heifer on her left hip.

I would say if you want to own that brand in MO you would need to register it, and if you want to brand any new horses definitely.
I would also make sure the brand is not already registered to someone else. |

Location: North Dakota | But if I were you I would keep the registration up to date in your old state too. Your brand may not be "available" in the state you are currently in. In my opinion freeze brands should be small (about 2") also LAnd H in my hometown does business all over you can google them. |

LOL! Thanks! I live in Kentucky, and work at a distillery, so bourbon and whiskey are very important to us. I've had some people roll their eyes at my brand... guess they think it's "over the top" but I love it. A horse with a moonshine brand on it is pretty sweet. |

Actually in some states, it IS against the law to brand an animal with a brand that isn't registered to you. |

You better have your brand registered in Montana before putting it on any livestock. Brand Inspectors will get ya and whomever put the brand on without asking/checking first. |
