I recently had my 16 year old gelding injected for the 1st time since I have had him. I have had him 4 years. He just wasn't moving right, and I felt like it was time. The vet did an exam an said he was sore in his hocks and 1 stifle. He rested for 6 days and the girl that I am having ride him (I am recovering from surgery) said that she rode him last night and he didn't seem lame at a walk but when she started to trot, he was noticeably limping?? I called the vet and he wasn't sure what was going on, he said to give him 2g of bute twice as a day for 3 days, the once a day for 7 dys. He said sometimes a horse can have a reaction to the steroid itself?? I am going down there now to make sure he is not running temp, and to make surer it's not infected but has anyone had this happen?? Please help

I would get him to a vet ASAP if you think he may have infected hocks.  I  don't want to scare you but I have friends who lost their horses to infections.   They were visibly swollen and sore at a rest though.   Good luck.

Please don't do this.  The max on Bute is 2g per day.. not 4g!  Your vet should know better!  I also would not waste any time getting him to the vet, as he could have an infected joint!  The sooner treated, the better, if it is infected.

You need a new vet if he's telling you to give 4g/day without even coming out to look at your horse....

I'd be at a lameness specialist ASAP

Please go to the vet ASAP.  Joint infections are nothing to be passive about.  I tried like the devil to save mine-- even surgery, and it was too late.  I had to put him down.  I hope for you and your horse's sake that's not it, but please check before waiting.

We had this happen with our horse. Spent 650 on lameness exam and injections and he was still lame. No improvement! About 6 weeks later finally went to another vet spent another 350ish but this vet was able to get him sound. We inject him every 6 months now no problems. I would make sure it is not infected and get a second opinion. A good vet would tell you to bring him in and check him for free if he possibly gave him a hock infection. At least my vet would.

As a way to share and learn, please tell us more specifically what was done by the first vet vs the second- I am curious?

And Bute and Banamine are also labeled for IM injection, too.  There are just some things that we don't do for the safety of our horses, and giving 4g of bute in 24 hrs is one.  This is what I was taught in vet tech school and the whole time I worked in an equine specialty hospital.

I'm sorry but I would value the opinion of a vet over a vet tech.

Injectable banamine has a 1 in 1000 chance of causing clostridial myositis to eliminate the chance some vets perscribe a small amount of antibiotic.

My vet text says bute should not exceed 4g/horse/day so her vet is within the normal limits.

I have never seen bute be perscribed Im, never had a vet tell me to give it this way, and in the text book is says extra vascular administration results in severe tissue necrosis.

I went down to see my horse for myself, although I am supposed to be resting from surgery and not driving, I wasn't taking someone else's word for how my horse was acing. He is NOT hot anywhere at any injection site, however he is fine at a walk, but when he goes into a trot, it's almost as if he wants to drag his stifle. Could the injection have hurt that much? I am heading to the vet tomorrow as he is 2 hours away, and I can't drive after my surgery, so I have to wait for a ride there.

was he swollen  anywhere on his hind? is this his first injections.? sometimes they can react the first week from injections if its his first time.... my geldings first time the vet missed and moved needle and he was swollen and sore for a good week.. I was heading to UF hospital and vet from there called and told me to give bute for a few days and see if he is better and he was..  of course there is a risk of infection but you should be able to see if there was any..if he jsut doesnt want to pick up his hind legs ..It may feel funny to him.. if its his first time being injected..also first time can take up to 3 weeks to see 100% improvement.. in my experience..
clear signs..

He said the X rays were good quality but he used the wrong drugs and he missed a sore front foot from over compensating, his right hock is worse than his left.  There was a lot more going on than just hocks. Once we fixed his front angles he didn't have trouble getting his feet out of the way stopping and he could use himself correctly he stayed sound longer after injections. I am not sure what he uses to inject him we jokingly call it the good stuff.  He mixes 2 meds and it turns a white color then he injects. I think he added 3-4 years to his competitive career easy. Now that we have fixed the other stuff we just do simple hock injections.

Yes, this is the 1st time injected that I know of, again, I have had him since late '09, and I never injected him, and to my knowledge, he never was before, but I can try get ahold of the person who futuritied him, she is well known. No heat or swelling at all, he did seem a little more spunky like he might have felt better, and he did bend and flex to the left even at a walk slower and calmer.

All horses react differently to injections. Sometimes there is a stinging in the joint for up to 2 weeks after injections. I would not panic and follow your vets instructions with the bute.

I went down again yesterday, he is NOT sore at any injection sit, or hot. I did lightly ride him around, but wanted to see if he would lope to the left any better, and he still does not want to pick up the left lead. I did not force him or push him, so I just walked him around and flexed him, and quit? Don't know what is going on, does he NOT realize it won't hurt anymore?

I have a horse who was not injected to much later in life also and the recovery process is a long one. The first time we injected her, she was so stiff and sore the vet the thought it was an infection but did a culture and everything came back fine. Same issue the second time we injected her. It takes her about 3 weeks to start feeling better. We try to only have her injected now when absolutely necessary and we know we will have to give her about a month before she is back to normal. Though most horses recover quickly from injections, every horse is different.

Maybe there is more going on than just sore hocks?  I took  my gelding in because he hopped around a left turn.  Told them to find what was bothering him.  He looked off on rear, blocked his stifle, good on rear but now off on front. Blocked up front and went sound.  Found he had sore hocks, a sore stifle and was sore in his front heels.  The front did not show up till he hocks and stifle were taken care of.

I don't know or a fact that is what is going on, but it is just a coincidence that he didn't limp before the injection, no one rode him, then after injection he is sore? I am having a really good shoer come tomorrow morning to look at his feet too, just trying to eliminate things. I rubbed on his stifle, didn't flinch, rubbed on both hocks, didn't linch. Maybe a little sore on the back but he WILL NOT pick up his left lead!!!!

was he picking up left lead prior to injection? I see you said he was a little off prior and decided to inject both hocks and 1 stifle.
what stifle did you inject and wonder why vet didnt inject both.
is he still on bute? if so.. hocks are usually not  painful  if horse is on bute. did you call vet back out ..
