I sold a barrel horse last week for $20,000.
A friend of mine is the person who told a friend of his about my horse and it resulted in my horse being sold.
When I asked my friend how much he wanted for a commission, he said he just wanted to help me and his other friend so I didn't owe him anything. When I pressed him and told him I wanted to give him something, he said "Oh - just buy me a gift card somewhere or something."
So here's my question...........
How much do I get a gift card for? I know what the traditional commission amount is when a broker helps you sell a horse, but what do I do in this case? I don't want to insult him by giving him too little.
I've never been in this situation before. Any advice?

$100 would be nice. Not too much and not too little.

5% would be $1000.  But I agree with the other poster of at least $500.

I kind of agree with the guy though, I wouldn't want anything for mentioning I knew a friend had something for sale.  I mention things to people all the time.  It's a good friend thing!

A $500 gift card is huge. How much Outback or Applebees (just examples) does someone need! lol You could do one of those Visa gift cards, but what the point? Why not just write the person a check at that point?

I dont know, but if the person made the comment "a gift card or something" in that manner, I'd suspect they'd not want much of anything. I'd say $100 is generous.

It's not like he helped her sell a $2,000 horse.  He basically made the sell on a $20,000 horse!  I personally think the $500 is the least amount I would give.  Give him a gift card that can be used anywhere, they don't always have to be for dinner places...or just hand him cash!

I would give him $500 cash, that way you don't have to worry with picking out a gift card to a place he'd actually use it.

I agree!  It's kind of an expensive horse, and I think $500 says "really grateful for you thinking of me".

And with one of those Visa gift cards, he can buy gas, or anything...I don't think I would want $500 worth of Applebees LOL

I brought a horse that belonged to a friend home with me from a show to show to another friend who ultimately bought the horse.  I told the seller that I did it out of friendship for the both of them and I didn't want anything.  She sent me a commission check in the mail anyway;.  The check was tucked inside a beautiful thank you card.  As it turned out, that very next week we had an emergency and the extra cash was very much appreciated!  The check was $500.

Years ago I helped connect a high dollar young horse with his new owner.  His previous owner repaid me by slamming me all over the horse world.  I helped place another mid range mare with her new owner and ended up with a psycho previous owner hounding me (and the new owner) for months.  So, imo, anything positive you might do is showing huge appreciation!!

You can do a Visa gift card, they can be used anywhere that takes Visa.  $500 seems appropriate and maybe instead of beer a bottle of Crown or something.  Although, a case of beer would suit me just fine!

I think a $500 gift card is a great idea! You could make it a gas gift card or to the friend's favorite tack store.I mean I know I could easily spend $500 at a tack store and well with gas/diesel prices what they are, that would be amazing.

This is what I would do for someone that helped me sell a horse....  Even if they turn down a commission, I'm still sending them something.

I think this is the best idea...a sweet thank you card in the mail with money is always a nice surprise when the mailbox could be full of bills. Also, for those of you that suggested the Visa gift card...everytime you use the gift card it charges a percentage to use it. I would prefer my friend to spend all that money on themselves.

It is so nice to hear everyone being so generous. I swear in our local area, no one even thinks of even saying "Thank You" for help matching up horses. Last time I sold a horse, I took in a young horse for my friend for 3 months free of charge in trade for commission, gave a gift card to a family member who had been helping me haul him to jackpots, and sent a gift card to the people who let us and the buyers meet at their arena to try him.

I agree with everyone else, $500- $1000 would be nice.  Its good to know there are so many generous people in the world.

I helped a "friend" sell a $15,000 horse, she was in a jam (due to her own stupid decisions)and had already borrowed $3000 from me to get by.  I told her I didn't need any commission, just glad to help out and quietly hoped she would be able to pay me back sooner rather than later.  A year later I finally just filed on her in small claims court and she paid me before it went to court.  I got called a chickens**t for all my troubles, lol.

Never again will I loan money unless I can afford to give it away.

I definitely want to do something for him - I wouldn't dream of not showing him how much I appreciate what he did for me. Honestly, I don't see how someone could be so selfish as to not acknowledge when someone helps you.

When I personally help a friend sell a horse, unless we have an agreement I am doing it out of kindness, not expecting anything in return.

OregonBR - 2014-05-03 10:14 AM $100 would be nice. Not too much and not too little.

Honestly on a $20,000.00 horse, $100.00 is too little, IMO.  It would look like you were being cheap.  Since normal commission would be $2,000.00, I think the suggestion of a $500.00 Visa card would be the way to go.

As an amateur and someone who considers horses as a major life consuming hobby, if all I did was tell one friend about another frends horse I would expect nothing. I would consider $500 as a great offering, but would feel very guilty accepting it. Friends help others out of friendship, not for money.
If I was a professional, I would feel and view it differently

$500 is 2.5%, standard commission is 10%. However, since he didn't list the horse and handle the majority of the sale (he was a referral), $500 should be a good way to go.

I think a phone call or just telling someone Is NOT being an AGENT, an agent actually shows the horse or sets up a meeting and attends. Thus 10% or what ever was prearrainged. I have sold horses through an agent and the agent was hands on and took some responsibility. In my openion people who want a cut for a phone call or word of mouth need to make their expectations known to the seller in advance of making the call.  That is just good business and being moral.
