I did it! This past weekend my new pony and I went to our first barrel race together. Quick background: very timid and with low confidence adult dressage rider batting really bad riding accidents experiences but wanting to do barrels all her life. The 17 yr old pony has been there done that kind of mount, very honest and all speeds, from walk to run his little heart out...so far, it seems like a good combination.
So anyways...we went to our little barrel race and we did training barrels and poles. We trotted all of them but I did have the courage to lope him home. I did look very out of place with my helmet and posting around the barrels (so many years of dressage riding do show not matter what saddle you're on lol). It was also my very first time doing the poles ever and I loved it....poles do look like a lot of fun!
To say the least I was a nervous wreck but he was very patient with me, he did try to test me once by not wanting to go in the arena (he really wanted to see how bad this new rider on him wanted to go in lol)I guess that was to be expected....new pony...new rider...let's see what we can get away with kind of thing! We did sort it out and everything went well after :-)
I truly hope my confidence level goes up and I can start loping him around the barrels(I do lope him at home around them, it is in strange arenas that I get all nervous) and even running him...my heart wants it so bad! Now if my brain will catch up with what my heart wants, I will be in good shape! In the meantime, I am going to enjoy one ride at a time and thank my pony for being such a great teacher:-)

Congratulations!!!! I trotted and loped at home this weekend - after some strokes, my balance isn't what it used to be. I can surely relate to "wanting to" and struggling to get it done! Enjoy yourself and your new pony!
