Looking for the best joint supplements for osteoarthritis!

A little bit of background information:

He's a 15 yr gelding who has been a lawn ornament (and buddy horse) for the past 8 years. He's a pansy. At 7, he was chased through a split rail fence by a nasty herd of fresh mustangs from Alberta, they fight hard and he just wasn't cut out for that. The paddock butted up to a concrete barnyard, and with the wet concrete, he overextended and fell. On impact, he tore his suspensory ligaments, broke his coffin bone, as well as broke his leg through the knee. All on his right front. He's gone through years and thousands of dollars of treatment and therapy, and had remained sound for the occasional weekend ride. BEFORE anyone freaks out at me for not putting him down right away, please take into consideration the time and money we put into him, and the fact that we had the best team in Ontario (vets, farriers and therapists) to work with him. He has been 100% up to this point, and still remains sound on that leg.

Recent findings:

He was tender and a little off 2 days ago. This tends to be normal if he plays too much in the field or if its damp/cold and he sleeps on it funny. Yesterday he worsened and was noticeably lame on his left hind. This morning he was a little stiff moving out, but loosened up. No heat, swelling, cuts, bumps or bruises that I could see. I called the vet to come take a look. Used the hoof testers on him with no response, flex test gave immediate lameness in his left hind pastern.

Diagnosis:

Osteoarthritis in left hind from shifting weight off of right front. He is not a young horse so arthritis is to be expected.

My question is... What have you used for your older horses for arthritis? What's most effective/easiest on their tummies? I don't want to be pouring the bute to him for the rest of his life. Is natural the best way to go? Or something medicinal? Would really like to stay away from injections.. I have had bad luck in the past and would much rather something on-feed.

THANKS!!! And sorry for the obscenely long post

T.H.E. has a great supplement in JointPLUS. It has Glucosamine & MSM in it. They also have FlamOXIDE that may be more what your guy needs since he already has the arthritis. It's a great all natural supplement so easy on their belly and they offer a money back guarantee. I would also recommed Inflammation Relief instead of the Bute. Also all natural and comes with the money back guarantee. Price runs around $60 plus shipping for a months supply for the Inflammation Relief.

This
It's an IM shot. I get mine from Wedgewood which is cheaper than the website above

Also, Previcoxx. Maybe MSM will help as well (it's cheap at least). I'm not big on the feed through joint supplements myself.

Hands down, pentosan, even though it is a IM injection, it is simple and has worked for mine.

I have a gelding that we give petosan to . But i do have a mare that has arthritis that is not as severe and we started her on a simple plain vitamin c supplement after recommendation from our vet. It has made a world of difference because she said horses in their teens stop producing vitamin c naturally and this helps with the ant-inflammatory response of the arthritis. It was a cheap enough thing to try and it has been amazing the changes.

THE JointPLUS may work well but he may need something a little stronger like THE FlamOxide.  I have an 18 yr old that does great on THE JointPLUS.

^^^^^ agreed. If you are looking for an oral supplement. Ive seen great results and will continue to use it. If you want an injection..... Pentosan is awesome! THE JOINT supplement I saw results within the first 5 days. With Pentosan I saw results within 24 hours. I switched over to the oral supplement because I use it on my barrel horse and I was worried that the injection site would be sore and didnt want it to interfere with his performance during runs.

I too love the TotalHealthEnhance products for my horses. The other thing I've had really good luck with is Lubrisyn. My daughter's old rope horse does REALLY well on the combination of those two.
