Just bought a yearling  and was wondering when you all would geld him. The flies are not bad yet and I have always heard if you geld them early, they will get taller. Is that true? Then I hear that's not true, geld them as a 2 year old then start riding them.
just curious what you all thought......

Are you set up to house a "stallion"? Granted he it's a yearling. BUT he still needs to be kept away from open fillies and mares. If you KNOW you are going to geld him, there's is really no reason to wait unless he is unhealthy.

I have a question to add...... what about if you just got him and he wasn't taken care of well in the past and is a little mal-nutritioned. Still geld now? Or wait?

I would give the horse a few weeks to settle down, if he is underweight, I would worm him, give him a month of good groceries, take him to the vet get him gelded and his teeth checked at the same time.

We don't have a mare on the place, and he in no way, shape or form shows any inclination of acting like a stud. I actually put him in the pasture with the geldings and they have put him in his place.
Just wondering if you guys heard about them getting taller if you geld earlier, or is that a wives tail?

Height comes from genetics, not having all of their man parts.   They might beef up from their man parts, but that's testosterone, and most only do that if they are breeding.
Geld him...SOON.

Height and structure are genetic. As proof I offer up my own gelding... cut when he was 6 months old. He's now a 16.2 giant. His full sister that I also own is 15.1

Do it now before it gets hot and there are lots of flies to make him miserable while he's healing.

My vote is consult with your vet.

If he's not healthy there could be too much stress on his system. If you can't do it now and won't have to worry about mares I would be inclined to wait un fall when the flies did down again to get him healthy first. But only your vet can really give you an idea of what his system should be okay to handle.

There has been a few studies that show that they will grow taller if gelded young. I've read them, and was amazed because back in the old days, everyone thought they would get bigger if you left them a stud longer. But these studies said if not gelded, the growth hormone grows the neck, muscles, and sexual organs instead of height. If you leave him a stud all summer and geld him in the fall, I don't think it will make that much difference. They were talking gelding them at a year as opposed to gelding them as a 4 yr old or something. I do have a grandson of Streakin La Jolla and out of a Top Moon bred mare that is 14.2. They kept him a stud until he was 5, and he is shorter than either of his parents. Would he have been taller if he was gelded at a year? Who knows? I would geld now, personally.
