Location: Texas | So sorry for Brenda and family. I don't know exactly what year, probably 2006 or 07, we went to Salinas CA to their PRCA rodeo. They run barrels on the track to the side of the big arena while other events are going in there. Trying to watch both areas was pretty hard, but I saw this black horse make a smoking run so I listened for the rider's name, and it was Brenda Mays. I had never heard of her, but told my sister that we were going to have to keep and eye out for her and that black horse. It wasn't long before Brenda and Jethro made me look like a genious. They were awesome together. |

RIP Jethro. May 1999-May 6,2014 RIP big guy, you made dreams come true. At 1pm this afternoon, Jethro was laid to rest for humane reasons. This was without a doubt, the hardest decision we've ever had to make! He was such a big part of our family for 13 years. The pain will eventually lessen, but the memories he gave us will be there forever. |

| My heart is broken for her. He was by far my favorite horse of all time. Brenda and Jethro were the perfect example of a partnership, moving as one. As someone who is not a known crier, I still tear up every time I see a post on FB or on here. Dora and Brenda are on their way, God's got it :). Love, hugs and prayers to their family.

hope I can put to rest some of the questions and speculation surrounding the decision to put Jethro down. Last Sept on his final run at Puyallup, he sustained an injury to his left front suspensory. Because we had good success with prp treatment on him in the past, we decided to have it done again. It was done also on the right front to help with some minor issues going on there. For some reason that's not totally understood by us and vets alike, it went bad and all the cartledge in both ankles was completely destroyed. He started also getting excess ringbone like growth on the outside of both ankles. Believe me, we had exhausted all that anyone said could be done, trying to get him comfortable enough to just be a pasture pet. But it couldn't be done and we made the decision to put him down for humane reasons. He was taken to OSU for the final exam and fulfilled all the strict criteria of AAEP for humane euthanasia. We owed him that, not to keep him alive for our selfish reasons. Because we can't get a hole deep enough to bury a horse of his size where we live, he was cremated and we will be bringing him home to stay in a couple days. Right up to the time he was put down, I was praying for a Miracle, but God has his reasons for not always answering our prayers the way we want. I hope now the speculation and wondering can be put to rest and we can all go on. Hug you horse, your family, friends, etc, as we never know when it may be the last run we have, the last time we see them, etc. Life's too short for all the bickering and animosity over petty things. Thank you to all who have called, emailed, texted, etc. It's overwhelming how many lives Jethro and Brenda touched. |

I agree with this, my heart aches for the entire Hays family. Having to make the choice to end the suffering is a hard one.
I also want to say shame on all the people who were speculating, starting rumours, etc.
Again positive thoughts and prayers to Brenda and the entire Hays family, Jethro will be greatly missed on the rodeo trail. |

Location: California | Don't get on the people who were wondering what happened. I think it was a horrible and painful thing the Mays had to go through. I'm glad that they shared what happened so that others can learn from it if they find themselves in the same situation. I can understand why some would not want to discuss it but knowing what happened may help someone else. Quit bashing. This is supposed to be a community of people who share the same love of a sport. My condolences to the Mays. That horse was one of my favorites. It was great to see a Northwest horse at the NFR. I'm so very, very sorry. |
