I am seriously considering trading mine in. I have a 2005 F250 with 135k miles. I love it and I've never had any problems with it. I fill it up once a week and drive at least 40 miles a day. Like I said, I LOVE it, but I realllly miss my sunroof and long bed from my other vehicle.

I'm exploring my options. I've always been a Ford girl. I like my SO's duramax, but I'm not crazy in love with it. I'm really liking the Dodge's, but SO is not. I think I'm really in love with the looks though, because I don't know too much about them.

So.. Give me the good, the bad, and the ugly on them all. My requirements are that I DON'T want something brand new.. needs to get the same or better fuel mileage, and can haul a 3H Gooseneck and stock trailer and isn't going to crap out on me. It's got to be decent because it will be my daily driver.

I don't know what you are looking to spend, or if you want a diesel or gas motor, but if it were me and I was looking to upgrade, I would look at the newer Ford with the 6.7L Powerstroke (I think they started it in 2008? not sure, could look it up). I've not had one, but they have definitely intrigued me as I haven't heard anything bad about them (yet).

Or I would look into a Dodge Cummins. We've only had one of the newer 5.9L Cummins (it was a 2006) and we liked it, but we've always liked Cummins diesel engines. Just my $.02.  :)

Let's figure out what you have... 2005 F250 gas or diesel engine ??

135,000 miles is nothing for a diesel engine although yours is a 6.0 diesel and has been good to you with no problems ... I would keep it ... mpg should be around 18mpg empty .. if yours has the exhaust burnoff filter that was the problem on 6.0's ... fix is about $3000 at a private garage. This should have been a factory recall and all of them fixed for free!!!

Gas engine with a short bed should be a 5.4 L engine and probably with 4x4 .. with mpg of 14-16ish ...

Do us a favor and give us this information so we can figure what mpg you are really getting .... 40 miles per day and fillup once per week sez you have a V10 gas engine and getting 9mpg ....

Next time you fillup ....
write down your mileage on your odometer i.e. 135,475 miles or whatever then
drive truck for a week
and when filling up again ... write down mileage on your odometer and subtract the first odometer reading from it to get the miles you have driven ... i.e. 135, 755 would give you 280 miles of driving ... (40 miles x 7 days)

Now take the gallons of gas you just filled it up with and divide this into the number of actual miles you drove .... i.e. 280 miles divided by 30 gallons of gas = 9.3 mpg

Learn to figure mpg per the above and you can graduate to the simple form since you understand how the calculation works................. set trip meter on ZERO ... OOOOO when you fillup and drive for a week and fillup again .... divide the number of gallons into the mileage showing on your trip meter .... that will give you the mpg you got .. and reset trip to zero for the next weekly fillup ...

Curious about what you were driving before pulling trailers that had a sunroof??

Your best dodges are going to be the 2003 to 2006 years that has the 5.9 L 24 valve cummins engine..... Ram 3500, 4x2 SRW with 6 speed manual transmission in them ... an entire clutch assembly runs less than a $1000 and if you have automatic transmission problems around 150,000 miles a rebuild on auto trans will run you $5-6,000 .... diesels overpower automatic transmissions with torque even tho the engine has less horsepower and torque with the automatic vs a manual transmission .... like 55 horse power less with an automatic trans ...

Fords ruined their reputation with the 6.0 L diesel and still do not have the 6.7 L correct and to work on a ford trucks engine .... they have to unbolt the cab and raise it up off the frame to get to the engine .... which costs you an extra $200-400 on a repair bill ..

GOOD LUCK and we need to identify engine you have so people can give you some decent advise ....

I went from 2005 F250 to 2011 F250 - WOW - there is a huge difference in power, the new truck feels like it had more cab room as well - it runs quieter too

I pull a 3h with 8' l/q and most of the time you dont know its back there even fully loaded - best decision I ever made

My gas mileage is about the same 10 mgp pulling and 12-16 on hwy

Diesel engine.. sorry, I will only drive a diesel.

My truck says I'm getting 12.3 MPG but I'm not sure if its true or not. I feel like I get more than that, but I can't accurately tell at the moment because my fuel hand doesn't work properly.

I've pulled BP trailers with my truck and it's fine.. but I'm scared what's going to happen when I pull a GN loaded down. I haven't done an ERG delete or head studded it.. but that's $4k easy. Of course, after I posted this last night, I had the idler pulley and fan clutch go out on my truck.  I owe $8k on it.. and I'm not sure whether or not to get something newer or not.

We've always had Fords, but did drive a Dodge and a Chevy Duramax with my Father's company when pulling trailers.  SO has a Duramax and we are on tranny #6 at the moment.

I'm on my 3rd GMC with Duramax/Allison combo--the first 2 are farm trucks now. Ford feels like a log wagon to me and I don't like their seats. My current truck is a 2010. The only issue I've had is an emissions sensor going bad and throwing codes.  I hate the emissions crap on the newer trucks. My parents just bought a new GMC and I got to drive it 2 hours home for them yesterday...wow. It was quieter and rode smoother than my truck and the electronics were fun to play with. For what they paid tho, I will take my not as fancy used truck, hands down. LOL

My 2 cents ... stay away from used Dodge. The front end assembly is a GIANT pain in the keester. We have a 2007 3500 dually with the 5.9L Cummins Diesel. I love the motor. However, the front end needs to be replaced every 20K miles and it is NOT cheap to do. I love the pulling power but ... as this truck has aged ... everything seems to be falling apart and coming loose inside as well.

I have driven an 2006 2500 GMC Allison Duramax over the Rockies pulling livestock trailers. It is my Father's truck that he bought brand new and is still used today for this same haul. That truck is awesome. At 250K miles, they finally had to do some maintenance including breaks, ball joints in the front, and one cylinder - that sucker can pull. The interior ride is still fabulous, the heated leather seats still work (with minor normal wear), the XM/radio/electronics are all still great. The interior and ride make those trucks far superior in my opinion than many others out there.

My brother has a 2009 3500 long box single rear wheel GMC Allison Duramax right now. Same great truck as the 2006 (obviously a bit different). The pulling power is still there with the fabulous GMC ride. He has not had any issues either.

Last summer I pulled with a 2009 F350 Diesel (not sure which engine it was) single rear wheel long box - not impressed. The ride seemed a bit stiffer than the GMC but it pulled the 3 horse trailer to Vegas and back just fine. I didn't hate the truck but I wasn't impressed with the fuel mileage or the ride.

JMO and what I have experienced. Good luck and happy truck hunting!!

Thank y'all for your help! I am only looking at trucks that are 2008 and newer, the newer the better. The Dodge I found is a 2010 3500 with 87k miles. They aren't willing to budge on the price though ($39k) and I just don't think it's worth it.

My. 02 .....Dodge...have had everything but a ford diesel. My Dodge ran like a top got good fuel mileage 17ish. Never had any issues on reason I am not still driving it is my brother totaled it. I had an old gmc with the 6.5L straight piped 2wd got 25 empty and 19 fully loaded. Bought with 250k traded it in on an 06 duramax...... I have nothing good to say about the 06 it would over heat looking at my trailer.. If looking in the 06 year range do you self a huge favor and do not get the LLY 8th vin number 2 . It was ok for just driving and hauling stuff in the bed but couldn't pull 4k up the pass. I just traded it for an older dodge......

Play with the search tab with different colored trucks and you will find new trucks 2013 and 2014 that have 6spd manual trans and 4x2 RWD for under $40k at this dealership ....

Of course always be ready for the bait and switch routine and deal on the truck they have advertised to keep from getting your mind and intentions screwed up ....

http://www.bonhamchrysler.com/inventory/view/Model/3500/New/Body/Tr...

Your manual trans have engines with around 55 more horse power than those with automatics and a clutch can be replaced for less than a $1000 ...

PM me your email .............. if you want me to scan their truck ads in our little local shopper type magazine ... and send you attachments ...

No, it wouldn't be worth $39K to me either...I think I can honestly say that without looking at it. Here, with the rebates and incentives, I hear advertised brand new 2013 carry over Dodge for just over $40K. I think it may only be a 2500 though.

All I can say is keep looking...if it is meant to happen you will find the right truck for you. :)

I.drove a 97 5-speed Dodge 3500 Diesel for 15 years, loved it till transmission broke off 5th gear. My husband decided since I haul so much that we should have a rebuilt transmission with the upgrades, instead of welding 5th gear back on. Spent 2000.00 and my husband did all the labor. Went 10,000 more miles and transmission shattered. 12,000 mile warranty that transmission company would not honor. I was afraid of the new Dodges, because of what friends had said about mileage and so forth. Bought a new 2012 Duramax 3500 Chevy. Love it. Pulls my 2horse LQ trailer without problems. Gets 11-12 pulling & 15-16 without. Paid 38,000 off the fleet lot. Doesn't have all the bells, but had electric locks, windows, cruise, trailer brake already on it and the exhaust brake. I totally have to recommend the exhaust brake. So far no problems. Hope it will go 15 years as well.
