Long story short I bought a gelding and my saddles do no fit.  I would like to get a Crown C because I believe he's atrophied and will be moving up in gullets after he fills in (and I would like to see him gain some weight).  He's 15.2 and race bred.  He has extremely high withers (partially due to weight and athropy).  I don't forsee him getting stocky by any means, but would like to see some weight added.  Any suggestions as to what gullet we might need to start out in?  I hate to take him to a dealer and feel guilted into buying a nicer saddle than I want (for now I'm a-ok with all rough out if it's gonna keep some $ in my pocket and allow me some room to save for the next gullet), but if that's what I have to do to get a good fit I will.  I am absolutely clueless about saddle fit (other than I know that my others are too tight on him).

I really don't have any good pictures of him yet, but I will post what I have so far!

You can somewhat see how prominent the withers are in the picture, sorry they're so crappy!

& I think the lighting in this one really shows the withers.

I will try my hardest to get something better later on this afternoon, but I'm just trying to get a guesstimate on gullet size without having to haul him somewhere.  I know of an 8.5 I could probably try on him, but it's a bit more than what I want to pay at this point.

Any help at all is appreciated!

I've heard Martin is great to work with on demo saddles and also they can tell you if a fitter is close by.

I love my crown c and the way it fits my boy. He was/is high withered like yours. We started out with a 7" and just got an an 8". I'm shimming the 8" for now but he is filling is behind the shoulders.

Did have the 7" for sale on here...need to get on BHW from a computer and change my sig..

I really suggest getting him fitted by a Martin professional. Don't buy that day, but you also need to sit in the seat if you get up to 9 and past as they say you might have to go a size bigger.

Honestly I would drive to Greenville, TX and have Brian fit him at Martin. It will be the best way to get him fit for the proper gullet size and you can sit in different saddles there to see which seat style, size etc you want to go with.

Thanks!

I called Martin yesterday to see if they could tell me if they were going to be at Ft Smith in two weeks, but I was transferred to a voicemail and still haven't recieved a call back yet.

Does anyone know if National Saddlery is a "certified" fitter dealer?  I could haul my horse to OKC and get him fitted, but I hate to waste the gas (Ft. Smith would be half the trip) just to get fitted if I want to buy something used online.

Wow.  I literally feel like an idiot!  I just mapped Greenville it and it's of equal distance from me as OKC is!  Just so long as they have cheaper models in stock I believe this is my best bet!

It would depend on if National Saddlery has all the gullets in stock. I think they do the fittings at the BBR (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that). Where are you located in Oklahoma?

I'm about 25 miles East of McAlester.  Greenville maps at 2:45 for me!  I am going to call and see if I can get an appointment set up for next Friday hopefully.

ETA:  I *think* they are the fitters at BBR b/c I see on their IG feed (classic's) advertising National Saddlery.  I wish I would have had the horse before the BBR and I would have gladly hauled him up there when I went to watch.

Yeah I would just go to Martin. It's definitely worth the gas $ to get the right fit on the first try!

When I had my gelding fitted I ordered my saddle after that through one of their dealers since I finally knew what I needed. They don't try to pressure you into any fancy extras, etc so it'll be up to you to either be able to find a good used one in what you are needing or a custom new.

Thanks, that makes me feel 10X better.  I'm a sucker for good sales people!

They do demo saddles if you are not close to a fitter. I test rode one before I ordered.

That's what I was told when I called Equibrand or someone else associated with Martin (didn't have Martin's #) and when I spoke with him I told him that Fridays would actually work best for my work schedule, but I heard he was off and he said that they work until 2pm.
