Ok so it has been super dry out here in California and my horse is in a sand pen barefoot and I have noticed in the past few months excessive drynes. Mainly in the heels and new growth. Someone said soak with plain water. Any input???
There are some good hoof conditioners out there, Hoof Flex makes a good one...not sure what's in your area! We will often overflow to create mud around the water bowls so they are forced to stand in it...but with your sand ground not sure how well that would work.
cut an old T-shirt in 2-3" wide strips about 6-8 inches long soak them in a good hoof ointment then tie it loosely around your horses ankle just above the coronet band it will loosen and ride just above the band.
I apply fish oil on the cornet band, had one his feet were dry causing contraction, this is what the vet said to do and in two weeks there was a visible difference.
I have been super impressed with a product called Hoof Heal. It's by the Cut Heal brand I think. It is so awesome! Our barefoot trimmer recommended it and I'm so glad he did. It's pretty much just turpentine and linseed oil with some other ingredients.
