Long story short.... Had trailer for years (I know it isn't stolen). Can't find title and never registered it in their name. Can't remember name of man it was purchased from and it's from out of state. Anything I can do to get a title if I trade for it?

You would have to have the person who's name the title is currently in apply for a duplicate.   The DMV can search by VIN # and tell you the name of that person.

I lost my title and contacted the trailer manufacture.  They said they would need the VIN and $50 and they would reissue another title.

How would they verify that it wasn't stollen or didn't have a lien on it?

DMV can do title search with VIN # since DMV are nationwide now for any irregularities.

Contact your DMV with the VIN number.  They can look it up and see if it was ever titled.  If it was you generally have to follow the chain of ownership, but if it was never actually titled (lost of them are not) you might be able to contact the manufaturer and get a dup. C of O mailed to you.  OR, the DMV should have some advice... you may be able to sign and affidavite stating you no longer have the paperwork.

Depending on what your state requires, you may be able to give a Bill Of Sale instead of a title. A dealership in your area should be able to advise you or even a trailer dealership in your state.

Our old trailer was never titled. We purchased it on a bill of sale. When we sold it, the buyer wanted a title. We had to take a copy of the bill of sale to our insurance company (Farm Bureau) and they did a title bond app that cost us $100 I think. The title bond app was to verify there were no liens on the trailer and it had not been reported stolen. We sent the title bond app to the state and received a title after about 2 months of "processing". This was in MS.

Don't know about your state, but in Nebraska, you do not need a trailer title. IF you want one, or need one, our local DMV will make one for you. Through the statement of origin, a bill of sale, a search thru their site, homemade or non titled, it is all real easy.

we bought an older trailer that didn't have a title...owner wrote us a bill of sale...we took it to DMV to get registration and tag, nobody had paid taxes on trailer for some time and they wouldn't issue us a registration and tag until we caught it up

You need to check with your state on what their requirements are for titling as every state is different. Kansas has a form to fill out and has to be inspected is one option so you just need to inquire. As one person stated about Nebraska, Oklahoma is the same way. We bought a trailer from OK that doesn't have a title but that state doesn't require a trailer to ever be tagged. We will have no problem following that.

Thank you all so much for your help. I contacted the manufacturer yesterday and the warranty was never sent in so they couldn't tell me the name of the person that bought it originally, but they gave me the name and number of the dealer it was sold to and said they might have records of who they sold it too. So I'm going to contact them today and also go by the DMV. Least I have a couple of places to start now. :)
