How sucessful is it?
Mare looked like breeding today would be a touch early at yesterdays check, she surprise us and was already ovulated today. So she was given both doses of fresh semen.
What are my chances, im so worried about this, worst two week wait ever lol.

I bred a mare with fresh semen in very similar circumstances and that baby is 4 this year.  Vet estimated the mare had ovulated 12hours prior. We took a chance and it worked. Good luck!

I just had a mare do the same, she was going perfect and then wham went really quick and ovulated sometime before 5pm the day before semen came :( so frustrating I would say chances are slim to none lol

Depends on when she ovulated. I've had good luck catching them after the fact, but I had a good vet and good drugs....which for some reason no one wants to use this year???

I think there is a small window after ovulation where they can still get in foal if inseminated. But I don't know if anyone agrees on that time-frame based on what I've heard from different people!

How much semen did you put in the mare? Sounds like you put in a lot if there were two big doses. I would want to make sure that she clears all of that extra out in order to up your chances of getting a pregnancy. If there is any extra fluid we like to do an oxytocin regimen to help the mares clear it out.

If this mare does not check in foal, in the future I would drug and breed. The drugs will force ovulation even if you think you are a little early (of course this depends on follicle size, grade of edema, and mare history) and good quality fresh semen is viable for around 48 hours. I just checked a mare in foal that we AI'd on a Friday morning; she ovulated sometime late Saturday/early Sunday.

To answer your question yes she got two full doses. We were going to force her to ovoulate as she looked a few days out the day she was checked but she beat us to it. The semen was very fresh was collected, I drove down to get it when i got to the vet Sponner was in the stocks cleaned and ready to breed, thanks to my husband bringing her to the vet for me.

Im just not sure if I should be excited or not, im so excited about this cross I can hardly stand it.

What do you mean by clean her out? This is my first attempt at AI and I feel really lost with it, kinda just jumped in with both feet up to my neck lol.

By Clean Her Out... I'm guessing here.... Mares will squat and expel excess fluids from her inner parts while the stallion is teasing her... Those can wash his .... umm.. efforts away...

We shipped semen last year to my mom in Iowa for a Willie Wicked maiden mare ... she surprised them and already ovulated --- they said what the heck put the semen in anyway .... well she has a HUGE bag and baby is due literally anyday!  That was shipped semen on top of it!!

Was just discussing this with Belle Mere yesterday -- they say within 8 hours post ovulation

Actually your chances are pretty fair if she had ovulated within the last 12 hours prior to breeding. One thing about it, if you did get her in foal, you will most likely get a filly.Your vet should do a course of drugs to help her expell all the excess fluid which is likely with 2 doses.  All that fluid does not make a good environment for the embryo.

Yes, this is what I meant about the extra fluid. Oxytocin is a drug that causes uterine contractions to help force out the extra fluid. We ultrasound the day following breeding to confirm that the mare ovulated. If there is any fluid present in the uterus we will do an oxytocin treatment to get rid of the excess fluid. Seems like different vets follow a different protocol, but a day or two of oxytocin with 3-4 shots given at 4 hours intervals seems to be typical.

Humm ... wish I knew this to talk to him about it. Its a long weekend here so I can not take her in until tuesday and that would be to late anyway.

I should have just took her to the breeding farm.

On the plus side I do want a filly

There's a 12 hour window from ovulation to the egg breaking apart, so I would think the 8 hour window is pretty fair...the closer to that 12 hours the slimmer the chances.

And yes I learned the hard way after two years of trying that a repro vet is your best option. I go to Brazos valley equine hosp. in navasota or Granada farms in Wheelock. BVEH is just under 2 hours and Granada is about 2.5 hours away from my house...dropping them off and leaving them for. Week or two is so much easier.

I have bred post ovulation and had decent luck getting them in foal. as long as your within 8-12 hours, your egg will still be in the tube and is able to be fertilized.

Recheck as I had one do that to me last year. She was good after another breeding within that month. Vet thought the extra fluid may have messed with our "project".As we slammed her with both doses as well.

I wanted to update this tread for thoes who were woundering what ever happned, and thoes who have to deal with this this breeding season. My mare was bred post ovulation with both doses of fresh semen used last year, here is what it produced:

She foaled a HUGE strong Filly! I could not be more pleased!! We are calling her Rizo (from greece) she is very full of her self and bold! shes going to be a knock out in the cutting pen, already got a really cool classy way of moving.

She foaled may 3 at 2:30 Am and I just missed it!

Here are some Pictures from a couple days ago. Im so inlove and I got another Roan :-)
