| Do you guys have any tips or tricks on getting softness in the mouth? I can get him soft while I am warming up and doing slow work through the pattern, but when it comes to making a run he becomes hard in the mouth. He will work awesome in a snaffle when we are going slow. But for running, I am still trying to find that "perfect" bit. So any tips on gaining softness would be greatly appreciated! | |

Location: South Dakota | I like my horses to be so in tune to me, that when I'm making a run, I don't need to be in their mouth a whole lot...just guide them as needed...and timing is very important.
If I need to use the reins a whole bunch when I'm making a run, and he's kind of needing to pulled on, that tells me, that there is work to be done in slow work, or even just basic foundation work..A bit with gag action will help to give you bend and flex...usually they don't have a lot of whoa tho...it will take some experimenting.
Teach him that when you approach a barrel, and melt in the saddle , that is his cue to gather or slow down just a bit, to make a nice turn...it's all about forward motion, but they still need to know how to gather for the turn....and that knowledge will help keep your horse softer...also he may need to get out of the snaffle, and into a light gag or shank bit...eg junior cowhorse...

Getting Softness
