I have never owned a horse that has summer itch but my one mare I bought a year ago has it and has already started to itch her tail out. Ugh. This year I gave her a shot, but I doubt it's going to help her. Any ideas on how or what I can do to help her?

Thanks.

I have a horse that does this too. The only thing that I have found that really helps is a product called Celebration spot on for horses. It comes with 3 tubes for about $11-12 from valleyvet.com. It also keeps flies away but I 've decided its some kind of gnat that is doing this. You put several drops in diff places per directions but be sure and put several drops on hips on both sides of tail and your horse will stop itching! It says it lasts 14 days, but in reality its about 10-12. It took me several seasons to figure out how to help my horse- I had tried bathing, worming & steroid shots but this by far has done the trick and its not expensive and helps with the flies & mosquitoes too. Hope it helps your horse too!

I have put my mare on generic Zyrtec. My vet told me to try it. So far, she is not scratching off her entire hide.

We have some that not only have summer itch, but are severely allergic to mosquitos and fly bites, (and cheap fly spray) to the point they will rub off all their hair, and leave scabby patches all over. About 10 years ago we found a great garlic product from a company called Springtime, and started feeding it. It has been amazing! The two that are really bad, we still put a fly sheet on, but that's more to keep color from fading than anything.
We feed 1 oz. twice a day in a little grain (we use Omolene 100, cause they are fat:)). Once they get used to it, they LOVE it! Every horse we have is on it, it's priced affordably as well!

My 5 yo started getting this every summer when he was a yearling tried almost everything with no lasting results.  2 years ago I bought an Ivermectin paste wormer and rubbed it all over everywhere he had it.  It cleared up in a matter of days and has never come back!

Do you rub it on the tail as well? She rubs right on the top of her tailbone....

My vet has me mix 20cc's Dex, 20cc's Ivomec (cattle liquid kind), 20cc's DMSO in a spray bottle fill the rest of the way with water. I spray it once a day on her tail head and anywhere else she rubs. This work amazingly. I also give her garlic in her feed. I have been battling terrible summer itch for years with my mare.

Vet told me to give 16 pills daily for the first week, and then 8 daily after that. I dissolve in water and pour on her feed. She eats it.

350 count supply from Sam's club or found on Amazon for 16.50
