I'm pretty dumb when it comes to bits. I've got a mare that I am riding in a twisted wire snaffle, she rides well in it but I need something with some lift for on the pattern. She won't tolerate anything with a dog bone or 3 piece.
Any suggestions?
Also, what kind of horses do well in bits with a nose band?

Goosetree double gag short shank will give you some good lift, with a chain mouth piece or what she's already used to, the twisted wire. Is use a leather curb at first then change up from there. Or the jr cow chain mouth, as you can tell I'm a fan of the chain mouth piece, nice a soft and the jr cow will collect her up because of the slight gag to it. If the chain doesn't work and she doesn't like the dog bone maybe just a smooth mouth.

I put my very heavy gelding in a Goosetree Pick up it. It is twisted 2-piece mouth piece. I had a hard time lifting his shoulders until I put him in that. In a snaffle he would just lean on me really bad. You can also try a chain port of some kind. I have had good luck with those as well.
