Anyone have any recommendations on a good video, book or article that really taught you some good advice about starting horses on the pattern...
Ive trained a few horses on the barrels before all of which have been very nice competitive horses but they were started as roping horses first and had many years of riding first. Ive had horses all my life but never started one from scratch on barrels, the project Ive got now has been broke 2yrs and riding pretty well so Im thinking about starting him on the pattern soon.

I really liked Dena Kirkpatrick's One Smooth Motion DVD set. I think she lays it out in a very interesting and well organized format. I learned a lot from her! Currently, I really enjoy watching the trainingbarrelhorses.com videos. I don't know if they necessarily show in depth how to start one but they bring up a lot of good points and small details that I believe often get overlooked. I also really like to watch other disciplines and apply it to barrel training. I watch a lot of reining and reined cow horse competitions and training videos. I really like Les Vogt, Al Dunning, and Shawn Flarida. Hope that helps!

Western Horseman has a barrel racing book by Sharon Camarillo. Not a thick book but has all the details and pictures to follow describing how to do and what follows by doing that way. You will know if your doing it right. It's the best book out there I think.

I second the Dena Kirkpatrick video series. I reviewed them a little bit last week when working with my three year old and it's made a world of difference.

I agree with Dena Kirkpatrick's One Smooth Motion set. You can also rent the set one dvd at a time from giddyupflix.com! Its like netflix but all horse dvds. 1 DVD at a time is $12 a month.

Thanks, I have the Sharon Camarillo book and I love it been referencing it for years. Figured the more the merrier :) Will most definitely look into Dena's video since I enjoy her articles in the BHN.
Anyone have any reviews on Charmayne James' perfect pattern (kinda pricey) or Sherry Cervi's and Clinton's video?

Ed and Martha Wright had a really good book but I don't think it is in print any more, not sure.  And I would think anything Charmayne has.  Edited cause I just saw where you asked about the Clinton Anderson / Sherry Cervi.....I bought it and was real disappointed.  JMHO
