Are there penalties for excessive force in rodeos? I was at a rodeo a few weekends ago and my mind was blown at the amount of abuse going on. I'm used to seeing calves roped and tied, but when the roper gets mad and beats his horse over the head in front of the crowd and doesn't get a penalty I'm in utter shock and can't imagine what the touristy crowd was thinking. The guy was still given a time and a placing.

I would think that he was talked to after his run by someone on the rodeo commitee. I'm guilty of smaking my horse on the neck after a college rodeo run (where my horse decided to crow-hop around the entire barrel pattern). My coach came up to me and said that he understood why I did it but it still shouldn't be done because of people being around and there could always be PETA people around, waiting for an excuse to broadcast a certian rodeo for animal abuse.
That's awful to hear about the calf ropers horse though. No horse should be hit of the head :(

That's kind of my bigger concern, with video cameras everywhere, behaviour like that can't be tolerated because it is negative publicity for rodeo and fuel for PETA/SHARK. I thought a public no time would have been better just to make it clear to spectators that that is recognized as poor treatment.
My horses get a smack on the neck when they're out of line, but I never "punch them in the head".

It depends on the sanctioning rodeo orgagnization. "Most" associations have rules regarding this offense and contestants can be fined for excessive abuse of their horses or livestock in general. I believe the WPRA is a $100 fine?

I would hope he got a stern talking to.
I would try to find out as well, because if he didn't I see no reason to contingent patronizing that rodeo company. In the crowd or in the arena.
They have a complaint box in their office and I did make a note of and drop it off. I didn't get the competitors name because I was walking back to my trailer and just happened to stop and look over at the arena when it all went down. Wish I had.
